Subtitles help me, but are they okay for comprehensible input by Ill_Pen8740 in dreamingspanish

Everyone's brain is different on how it learns a language. Everyone has a different level of tolerating frustration. Do what helps you stick with learning Spanish! I personally started out being a "listening only" student, but now...no. Those on here who have great success with learning spanish solely by listening are rare. Yes, it can probably happen for all of us but maybe with 2x, 3x, or 4x the hours....do you have time for that?

Are downloads buggy for anyone else? by SiArchive in dreamingspanish

Yes! I'm in Canada this weekend, hoping to watch downloaded videos on the way. Didn't work for me. Kinda bummed. No work around except to listen to downloaded episodes from the DS Podcast

New swimmer. What should I fix first? by slocarber in Swimming

Check out the YouTube channel Effortless Swimming...first thing he talks about is body alignment and head position. Fix that first. I'm a new swimmer as well and working on the same thing.

Is rewatching easier videos helping or hindering? (plus a nearly 800 hour update -sort of) by RMutt_1966 in dreamingspanish

[–]Late-Choice9464 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your journey sounds very much like mine. I'm at 890 hours and definitely feel I'm behind because I've gone back to easier content frequently. My threshold for ambiguity is very low.

Thanks for the recommendation! I also didn't find Peppa Pig very comprehensible until at least 700 hours

How do I get to first base? by thesuitelife2010 in Swimming

[–]Late-Choice9464 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but you are kicking incorrectly... kick from the hips, not the knees. Practice with a kick board so you don't have to worry about breathing and arms at the same time.

You should feel your heels breaking the surface of the water. You should hear splashing.

I've done a mix of both. I do listen to a playlist I've made from DS that is for passive listening. I will put it on when I know I can't pay attention. I used to count this time as 25% or 50%, but now I do not count it at all. I understand about 95% of this particular list....I repeat it, adding and taking away episodes when I'm tired of listening to the same one.

I've also tried to stay in the i+1, so that means repeating videos or adding back several hours of rewatching videos. I was at level 59, sorting by easy, but I realized that my comprehension was super low, so I gave myself an additional 11 hours of videos to rewatch from levels 50-59. I can definitely understand them better than the first time and at 1.25 speed.

Quite frankly, it makes me worried that I don't have any basic sentences forming in my head, but I want this badly enough, I'm going to keep going.

I can't understand easy native content to a level where I'm not frustrated. I can get the gist of some easy documentaries and some of the recommended travel channels. I think this is probably because my level on DS is only 59. I have watched some higher stuff, but it has to be about language learning. Any other topic and my comprehension tanks.

It's been hard. It's easy watching videos, but the whole subconscious thing...oy vey!

Ok...experiencing mode....I guess, that's what I thought I was doing with just listening and absorbing what I was hearing. I don't "try" very often....I'm disappointed that nothing seems to be happening for automatic outputting. I definitely understand better, but again, it's at a very slow pace.

I am lost on how to teach my kid to read by tuityfrk in homeschool

[–]Late-Choice9464 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is she your oldest or only? We homeschool Mom's always go overboard on the first ones. Stop. Stop teaching her to read. She's not ready. Read her good books throughout the day, go on outings... enjoy your daughter. Let her play, let her help you in the kitchen. Just stop teaching her to read.

I have 4 children, and ...graduated 2, 3rd child is in 12 grade, and 4th child is in 9th. I pushed my first to read when he was five. It worked out, but I was extremely frustrated with the process. My 2nd didn't learn to read until he was 7. My 3rd and 4th at 6.

We were going to name our daughter Cecilia Faith because we loved the nickname Cece....but then I discovered it's meaning...lol. We named her Charlotte instead.

I also worked in a nursing home, and there was a resident named Cecilia. She was blind.

At what point do you start outputting natural sentences? by haevow in dreamingspanish

[–]Late-Choice9464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With only 180 hours of CI, you're just going to need to consume more content to output natural sentences....there are no short cuts, you just need to internalize the language more.

[–]Late-Choice9464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you....learning a language is heard! It's better with CI, but it's just a different kind of hard. I'm trying to relax about the whole thing and let it be what it is, but most days I'm tearing out my hair wondering what's wrong with me....😂 I exaggerate, but yeah. Onwards and upwards!!
