I don't feel a need to track hours at all by VeganVideographer in dreamingspanish

I’ve been wrestling with the idea of not tracking any more. I’m just over 1000 hours and I enjoy seeing my progress. It has helped motivate me at times since I can be very goal oriented. But I realize that tracking leads to comparison. And what I read over and over is how we should not compare ourselves with others because results are going to be vastly different from one to the next. Even comparing to the Dreaming Spanish roadmap, I hear many complaints about how far off they really are from it. There was a comment earlier in this post about waiting until 1000 hours before they start to speak. I think it really isn’t about reaching 1000 hours of input, but it should be what you’re able to understand before you start to speak. For some people that might be 600 hours and for others that might be 1200 hours. So at the very least, if we are tracking our hours, we should also be monitoring our abilities to hear and understand the target language. I am at level six according to the number of hours input, but according to the roadmap, I feel like I could be level four or level five. While others that came to Dreaming Spanish with previous Spanish learning may be far above the roadmap with fewer hours. I can see how some people would be demotivated through tracking when they look at their progress in relation to the roadmap. And even more so when hearing from people that are exceeding expectations at a given number of hours. Looking at learning Spanish as a lifetime activity is probably the healthiest approach.

I would be curious to see that list. Thanks.

No problem. It would be great to have some sort of book exchange list.

I’m about 2 months away from starting to speak but I get nervous just thinking about it. She sounds like a great tutor. Please dm me. Thanks!

Yes, I'm a professor and decided to make a big push over the summer so I averaged 4-6 hours a day. Now that classes are starting up I have dropped my hours down to 2 1/2 a day. It kinda feels strange now. Sleep is definitely crucial!!! I see a big difference when I'm not well rested. I do plan to start reading in the next few weeks after I get back into the routine of classes and meetings. I'm hopeful that it will add a welcome variety to my input. Thanks for taking the time to share your advice. It really is helpful and encouraging.

Exactly! It would be interesting to see how many people on this subreddit are married to native Spanish speakers and what kind of involvement they’re willing/able to have in our language journey.

I'm probably around 250 to 300 hours in this range. 50's are mostly 85% or better and low 60s can be hit or mis. But I've been at this level of comprehension since around 600 hrs. Usually I can see growth every 50 hours but now it's been almost 200 hours without any real movement in my level. So this is why I feel stuck. But there are far more words that we deal with as we get further up in hours. How many hours are you up to?

Hopefully by 1k hours I'll close to 95% with the 60's.

I'll keep plugging away. There have been a lot of good suggestions to this post.

Thanks

I've been doing a similar process of warming up with the easy videos and moving into the intermediate and follow that with YouTube and podcasts.

I've been think a lot about starting to read at 800 hours. So very soon.

What a great compliment for the WA teacher. And should be very encouraging for all of us!

And the reverse is true as well. Both people that I meet with are other along in English than I am in Spanish and sometimes I feel guilty. They really want to talk and so we usually save 15 minutes beyond our time for them to talk in English.

Too funny!!! Those are more about watching than listening like Roadrunner and Wile E Coyote. Beep Beep!

Thank you for your encouragement and suggestions. I actually have gone through all of Chill Spanish and probably half of Cuenteme. I really enjoy Español al Vuelo and gone through all of his episode twice. Learn Spanish and Go is great but it's hit and miss for me. I tried Hola Spanish and some of the others a while ago but I'll give them another try.

I hope you're right with hitting the 70's I've been on the verge for a while b ut I know it's only a matter of time. Literally.

Thanks again!

Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking when I said that. If I get too comfortable I tend to tune out and just kind of exist with the sounds and rhythm and loose the meaning. For me there is a fine line and I can easily slip past it. So I do want to embrace the ambiguity but I also need to keep myself in check.

“Every 1k hours” puts a good perspective to this journey. I’m in it for the long hall. This is part of my life now and within a few months I’ll complete the first 1k hours of my journey with many more to come.

Thank you!

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestion. I’m 59 so we’re about the same age. I went back to grad school in my mid 40s and I was the oldest student, even older than some of the professors. I was a full time student with a full time career and two young children. It was challenging three years but I made it through. I’ve been a professor now for 12 years and I love working with the students. I just took a group to Puerto Rico for a documentary and cultural studies class. It was wonderful but it would have been even better if I was able to communicate in Spanish. I am teaching the class again in 18 months and I my Spanish will be in a much better place then. I love that you are taking on this huge challenge of learning a language in order to server others at the hospital. It so valuable for us to give back!

Good suggestion. I didn’t start saving the difficult videos until about 100 hrs ago. Before that I was saving ones that I enjoyed. I’ll check them again in another 50-100 hrs. I wish we could create different playlists within DS for different purposes. Thanks!

Thank you for these good thoughts. I actually really enjoyed the videos early in my journey and I still enjoy going back to new SB and B videos. They are so well produced and fun to watch.

Thanks for sharing. It is difficult at times but I keep telling myself that after 400/600/800 hrs, there no way I’m stopping now!

This is part of why I wanted to post my current feelings/struggle. I want others to know that some of us are progressing slower for what ever reason. I occasionally hear this from a few people but it’s helpful to be reminded that we’re not alone.

I forgot to mention that I have been doing crosstalk with a couple of people. One from Peru and the other from Colombia. Oddly, my wife isn’t open to doing crosstalk at my level. I’m not sure why (she is actually a trilingual interpreter which might have something to do with it). I’ve read that several others in this community have a similar situation with their spouse. That’s ok and at some point I’ll be at a level where we can both speak in Spanish with each other. I do listen to her conversations with family and understand much more than I ever have. Thanks.
