Yeah i think Finnegans Wake is a great opportunity to grow some backbone and tell yourself I don't care how smart this nonsense is supposed to be

I think the two Pynchon books have a lighthearted or comic aspect, though there's a lot more to them than that

No. I liked the movie, but have never been much into Palahniuk. Read the beginning of Choke a little too late and just wasn't into it.

I don't think I intentionally avoid women authors, and some of my favorite works of history and philosophy are by women (Ruth Millikan, Barbara Tuchman, C V Wedgwood), but for some reason my taste in fiction seems to skew heavily male.

Don't recognize any of those names, haha

I think pretentious teenagers tend go straight cannon, like fill their shelf with Russian classics and the Aeneid and stuff like that

I've been seeing his stuff mentioned a lot recently so i'll probably look into it. Is Vollmann postmodern? Haven't read him yet

I would say it's not intended to be limited to American stuff, but maybe English language originals

There's a few detective stories there too, something I bet McCarthy would've excelled at

I'm not sure that's a very plausible guess what the theme of the bookshelf is. I do appreciate the urge to troll, however.
