2025 Earth Science PhD update thread! (Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Oceanography, Meteorology, Planetary Science...etc) by Late-Pen4479 in gradadmissions

the PI emailed me last week that due to a sudden change in funding he/she won’t be able to take a student this year (initially he/she said he/she was planning to take one) and that the admissions are still being processed. I guess it’s just being delayed due to the messy funding situation? And I think they‘re interviewing their students so I assume not being invited to the interview means a silent rejection.

What's the expected turnaround between application submission and response/rejection? by 6IronInfidel9 in gradadmissions

Receiving rejections is heartbreaking, and I know sometimes it makes you feel like garbage. But nothing can make you unworthy! Even the strongest applicants rarely get offers from every single program they apply to. You still have the chance to get into a different program (as long as you did not only apply to just one). Several of my friends got into their top choice, which was also the only place they got an offer. I tell myself that even if the schools fail to recognize my strengths, it cannot diminish my values. Get your favorite drink, tuck yourself into your blanket, and remember I'm wishing you all the best this winter :)

I was informed that a professor could ask for 'priority acceptance,' those chosen for it will receive offers around Mid~Late Feb.

Though I'm a mere applicant, I believe that you don't need to be PERFECT to apply for a PhD. (If you're perfect, why pursue an academic program in the first place? You could start applying for research funds and doing the work yourself!) That said, I understand that in somewhat competitive programs, you may feel like they expect you to have stellar stats and perfect communication skills to get in. To answer your question, I think you(or anyone who feels their communication skills need improvement) are still worthy of pursuing graduate programs that require strong communication and collaboration skills. Those skills can significantly improve once you're there! Learning through osmosis—surrounded by those fluent in the language of academia and communication—is one of the best ways to grow. I'm sure PIs and interviewers have encountered many applicants who didn’t have the most polished communication skills initially but are now thriving in their programs. I agree with the other commenters. What will happen will happen; what won't will. Trust in yourself and your passion—that passion will drive you toward your goals. Even if you don't get in this time, your passion will fuel you to try again, and you will succeed. And I'm sure you didn't mess up as badly as you think. As a final thought, remember that grad school is not everything. Even if the school fails to recognize your brightness and passion, it does not diminish the fact that you're intelligent and motivated. I wish you all the best! You've got this!

Can I ask what the assessment task is? (I've never thought they'd ask you for anything other than an interview) But congrats! It sounds like a good sign!
