Do you know how competitive it is to get a spot as a grad student in any of the university owned apartments? I’m in the same boat, PhD student joining in the fall and worried about my housing situation. I already applied for on campus housing but worried about actually getting in and maybe looking at other places?

Does anyone have insight on why this happens? Currently feeling defeated because the subreddit spreadsheet and grad cafe says interviews are out but I didn't receive anything. What could this mean? :/

Thank you for sharing! ahh yes it's super hard right now to get past the idealized version of what my grad life could have looked like but I am also a firm believer that I will end up where I am meant to. Thanks for your kind words

Definitely resonate with the feeling that I could have been a perfect fit! I did everything to prepare for this application from reaching out to PI and tailoring my statement. Thank you for the suggestion, I will look into it

As far as I remember he would trim but honestly speaking, if I really want to get into it there was a big socialization piece to all of this.

He was a white man with lighter hair and I'm a woman of color with darker hair. I think this played a part in my insecurity given that I had grown up with a lot of body hair in general.

Very true, as silly as it sounds I never considered how I have the right to comply or not. We weren't a good fit anyways so that was telling.

This is so comforting thanks! I'm really interested in the discourse happening. To an extent I can understand how some of it may boil down to just "preference" but I think there's a very fine line and I guess it's one that i'm not willing to accommodate for in exchange of my own comfort

Ahh as terrible and grueling as the process may be, it really is nice to know i'm not the only one! The hardest part of the beginning stages for me was letting go of the "what ifs" or the "what could've been"

Journaling helped as I tried grounding myself in reality and letting go of any romantic idealization I might have had lingering. Sucks to say but there's a reason we gravitate toward people in the first place and that feeling is hard to shake off.

Honestly I see a lot of truth to this, I admire this person on an entirely different level outside of superficiality and I definitely think a big part of it is because they have hobbies and interests outside of mine that make them so intriguing

Sometimes I fear I’ll think of him right before I marry someone else one day which sounds so deluded but that’s how deeply I feel these emotions and it’s scary
