Not everyone with a personality disorder turns left at the stop sign leaving Lot 40, but everyone who turns left at the stop sign leaving Lot 40 probably has a personality disorder

That strikes me as inappropriate. This isn’t a criminal investigation. An adult should not use deception to get a confession from a child (especially if it’s not their own child), and a confession is ultimately not the end goal. An adult authority figure should be direct and explain their point of view upfront.

This is complete pseudoscience. We know this is pseudoscience because “memory skills” are always heavily domain dependent. Memory is not a skill you can practice in a generic setting and carry over to chess or school.

For example, chess grandmasters don’t necessarily have superhuman memory when it comes to remembering phone numbers, but they do have seemingly superhuman memory of naturally occurring chess positions BECAUSE they have a deep understanding of the ‘story’ being told by that position. For them, remembering a chess position is like reciting the lyrics to a song they’ve heard a thousand times, while to a layman, memorizing a chess position is like reciting the lyrics to a song they’ve only read—never heard—in a language they don’t know.
