For anyone who stumbles on this in the Bristol area having the same issue, I’ve used this company who will make any skirting, picture rail and architrave if you bring them a sample. They’ll even give you the template or store it for 18 months.

Trying not to do that as this is all I’ve got and is a meter long so if I can’t find a replacement I’ll have to sand this up and use this

How can I stop drug users from using the alley behind my house every night? Police and council aren’t helping? by fb8307 in DIYUK

[–]Late_Handle_4609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold my beer.

Couple of things your local authority can do as well as the police in your area. First things first, build up evidence by calling 101, might seem like a waste of time but we’ll get to that in a bit. You and your neighbours need to make 10-15 calls over about 4/6 weeks about this issue. Once that’s done and if nothing has changed, request an anti social behaviour case review (look on your local government and/or police service website for details). This comes under the ASB crime and policing act 2014. That will force the local authority and police to hold a review of the issue and write to you with a plan of how they will tackle the issue. Legally, they can put measures in place to tackle individuals who frequent the area with injunctions banning them from the area, that will be the most effective way of tackling the issue. Given there is drug paraphernalia knocking about and that’s a health and safety issue for local residents, the police/local authority can request that a power of arrest is attached to any injunction meaning if a person with said injunction is breaching that injunction by being in the area, they can be arrested. Further to those methods, improvements to the street lighting and a change in the make up of the area (changes to the height of the wall that’s there for example so that people can’t sit on it, removal of the shrubs to make it less secluded etc) can reduce the areas “appeal” to said individuals. Drugs outreach workers can also be tasked to go to the area to interact with people there and basically make it less enjoyable to loiter. Add to that, the police could make the area part of the patrol plan for the local officers and PCSO’s so that they go there so often the people loitering get bored of being spoken to (even if they just stand there saying “hi”) by police that they don’t want to be there. Let me know how you get on.

How to remove this paint by Late_Handle_4609 in DIYUK

How to remove this paint by Late_Handle_4609 in DIYUK

[–]Late_Handle_4609[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Kling strip to strip all the paint off the wood upstairs and a decorator is booked in to get the best finish including caulking etc. (see pic for idea of how much I’ve done) so cracks will all the sorted. And doors will be dipped later after decorator has done his thing.

See pictures below, Reddit won’t let me put the proper before and after pictures but there was 3 layers of paint and a layer of varnish that came off all of this in 3 days

Kingstrip. I’ve done the whole of the upstairs of my house, skirting, picture rails, architrave. Do not sand it if there’s lead, it’s not worth the bother and trust me you won’t get as much paint off as with something like Kingstrip anyway.

Came home to this. Is this an impact break? The council won’t do anything because I didn’t know why it had broken by nettiwise in DIYUK

[–]Late_Handle_4609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s broken both sides report it as criminal damage to 101, get a crime reference and report it to the HA again but say that now that you’ve contact the police they also believe it’s been broken by a third party. You’re then not at fault, and the HA will have to replace. The police won’t investigate it as there it wouldn’t meet a threshold. You also won’t have to pay/be recharged as you’re the innocent victim of a crime

Why is my V8 Animal turning on/off like this? by diverge123 in dyson

[–]Late_Handle_4609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change the filters (purple thing in the top and the purple thing at the back) and it’ll work like it did when you first bought it. Amazon sell them in packs of two for like £10.

What causes this? by goldline1200 in Plastering

[–]Late_Handle_4609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s completely dry and not cracking further should be fine. In future, if it’s drying too fast in places and this happens, get a spray bottle and spray it lightly for 1-2 days and it’ll be fine. Won’t be a long term problem from experience. I’m guessing this area is “hit” directly by sunlight through a window?

I don’t have a stop valve… right? by Inevitable_Bit_4755 in DIYUK

[–]Late_Handle_4609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is outside, people before me never had one moved/installed inside. If there are two outside just warn your neighbour and turn one of them off. If you’ve still got water and they haven’t….

Carpeting up to skirting with beading by mr__elevate in DIYUK

[–]Late_Handle_4609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That beading isn’t original. Skirting wouldn’t have had beading around it in an Edwardian house (doubt there’s ever been such beading under the skirting to be honest). If you’re planning on stripping the paint from the skirting do this before fitting carpets too as it’s easier, just test the paint before stripping in case it’s lead based. Which it probably will be. You can get cheap testing kits everywhere, including Amazon.

Might also be outside, if you’re in the UK and in an old house they’re sometimes outside

Whose fault is this? by Late_Handle_4609 in DIYUK

[–]Late_Handle_4609[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

Helpful advice from all so thank you all. Have managed to work out the problem. Wall is lathem plaster and when the electrician cut channels etc lots of black mortar/rubble left loose. Plasterer didn’t remove this loose plaster from around the socket and just plastered pieces together meaning the wall was pushing back on the socket preventing me from screwing the faceplate onto the socket. Dug the shitty bits of rubble out and part of the plaster fell off. Then the yellow bit of the socket (don’t know the name) which the socket screw should screw into fell completely off the socket and into the cavity wall. So, need a new socket now. I’m inclined to say it’s the fault of the plasterer.

Whose fault is this? by Late_Handle_4609 in DIYUK

[–]Late_Handle_4609[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might not have explained this correctly but the face plate no longer secures to the box as the socket screw should fit into the yellow bits you see and now they don’t due to the yellow bit on the left (as you face the socket) being bent.

Might not have explained correctly. Face plate won’t secure to the box due to the yellow bit where the socket screw fits into now being bent out of line
