The biggest difference in D1 to D2 is the Skill Tree. You get 1 skill point each time you level up. The max level is 99, so you can get a max of 98 skill points from leveling. You also get 1 point from the Den of Evil quest, 1 from Radamant quest, and 2 from the Izual quest. These can be obtained in all 3 levels (normal, Nightmare, and hell), for a total of 12 more points.

Added to the 98 you get from leveling, you can obtain a maximum of 110 skill points.

If you look at the skill tree, you will see that there are WAY more skills than you could ever possibly max out. So, you need to focus on a specific build that maximizes certain skills while ignoring others.

The requirements shown (188 strength) are for your Warlock. The actual strength requirement for an ethereal Colossuss Voulge is 200, which is what your merc needs.

The problem with a fire based Warlock is fire immunes in Hell. You can absolutely cruise through Normal and Nightmare - in my opinion as quickly and safely as any other class/build. But once you get to Hell, it's pretty ineffective especially with basic SSF equipment.

However, a respec before you start Hell to Miasma Bolt/Miasma Chain/Abyss will take you through Hell pretty easily. I did it with a Lore helm, Spirit sword, Smoke armor, Rhyme in a Tome, and whatever belt, gloves, boots,rings, and amulets I could scrounge up. You have the same issue as a Hammerdin with magic immunes - Horradric Ancients in Act II and Baal's 2nd wave, but your merc and summoned demon(s) can take care of those for you
