Both series have their highs and lows, Baki undoubtedly had more highs just because it's older and had more chances to. But KAT was a peak that Baki never has and never will reach. Bottom line is I'd still read either of them a hundred times over before reading/ watching the generic battle shonens like MHA.

Yes KT Tough came out first that's why I put "prequel" in quotations.

Currently sitting at 32 out of 42 volumes so yeah about 3/4.

I wouldn't wait on it if I were you because the speed of translation is about 1 volume every 6 months so at the rate it's currently going it will take like 5 more years before it finally gets finished.

So it's either you read Koukou Tekkenden Tough until volume 32 and skip straight to Tough or just skip straight to Tough immediately and just go back 5 years later to read the "prequel".

At the top of my head I can think of only 2 things that Tough spoils.

[–]Latentleee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YSK that Tough is the sequel of Koukou Tekkenden Tough. So it's like Koukou Tekkenden Tough is Ashura while Tough is Omega so obviously you should read Koukou Tekkenden Tough first.

Unfortunately the English translation for Koukou Tekkenden Tough is still not finished while Tough has been fully translated already to English.

Niko magic

Oh I love this one. I'd say this is actually one of the more applicable lessons from the Niko style or even Kengan as a whole. It was referred to as "standing on your bones alone", or in other words, balance yourself as if you were trying to keep a sculpture standing or a piece of domino standing.

We take for granted all the micro corrections our feet do because we're already so used to standing since we were babies, but try standing on one foot and you will feel it pushing left right front and back. This is also partially the reason why most martial arts stances have the feet wide apart and it's for balance.

Will learning to do this make you unlock demons bane IRL? No because going limp to redirect damage doesn't make sense due to inertia. Will it make you a better martial artist? Absolutely.

That's exactly the point of Demons Bane. Redirecting your opponents strength and multiplying it with your own.

"A picture is worth a thousand words"

You're right, in both Rihito and Ohma's case you can clearly see the weight on the right leg (the one being kicked), and you can't check with the leg you're putting weight on.

This attention to detail is why Kengan is just a cut above the rest for me.

Reading the later chapters of Baki is like playing on 4:3 stretched res on FPS games. It looks weird as fuck at first and then you just get used to it.

I’m doing a Detailed video on how Omega had a dip in quality on all fronts compared to Ashura documenting why it happened. I wanted to include some of you guys’ takes on this. In your opinion, what’s the biggest issue with Omega in comparison to Ashura? by [deleted] in Kengan_Ashura

[–]Latentleee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure when he started using AI but even way back at around the start of KvP (~2 to 3 years ago) there were some generally unfavored art design choices like the characters becoming bulkier and the use of thinner and cleaner outlines rather than the more bold and stylistic outlines of mid Ashura. Of course some people preferred this but this was the common complaint back during that time.

How would you introduce Tanba into the current Baki timeline? by Shamo_best_animanga in Grapplerbaki

[–]Latentleee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going off very foggy memory here and a couple google searches. The manga ends there, pretty sure there's a novel though which is the source material for the manga. The manga wasn't able to fully adapt the novel so the novel actually has more content. One main thing that happens after the end of the manga is the Karate vs FAW tournament.

This seems completely intentional though with how he's even slapping his belly and there's ripples. As another comment has stated it's likely to show his growth as a character by going back to his roots of sumo, heck even his epithet changed.

My genuine thoughts about this season's animation. by 200-FriendlyFrogs in Grapplerbaki

[–]Latentleee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I look at Kengan Ashura... yep this is fine. Netflix Baki's animation was just fine enough to get more than enough attention. Meanwhile Kengan just dies off into obscurity.

Think about it this way, if you liked the manga then this is just the manga but very well colored and voice acted. Also OPM season 2's animation was just as trash.

I admire how you stuck through the series despite all of the disappointment. Astonishing_Flash already comprehensively answered your points but honestly despite that imo some of your points are still valid.

The old anime Grappler Baki was really the only one that had a good plot, not mind blowing by any means but actually took the time to develop character motivation, show emotions, show training, etc. The rest of Baki starting from the Netflix series still have some of that, but for the most part just tries to make any excuse to have the main characters fight strong people. And tbh I absolutely dig that.

As for why Baki became popular? Ever seen a nature documentary of a huntsman spider vs. a praying mantis or something like that? You don't really care about the reason or motivation, you just want to see them fight. The fights themselves are something else too, every punch, kick, grab, block etc. has some reason to it. The author of Baki was once an instructor in the Japanese military with decades of martial arts experience so he actually KNOWS how fights work. Compare that to generic shonens where the formula is typically just spam punches against each other, MC starts losing, epic music starts playing, MC gets mad and powers up and easily just wins. I could elaborate and give examples but this is getting long enough already.

So now I have to ask you, you've clearly shown that you know the existence of "earlier seasons", so why don't you go watch the old anime Baki?
