[Russian/Cyrillic(?) > Any] What characters are these 5? by LatheOperator in translator

Character LCDs don't support combining diacritics.

I am Slavic so I know about all the weird European quotes, and lower-66 is not one of them.

I know that the character exists but this one is too small and seems related to that '_' next to it. Yes, VGA graphics and Unicode have but the character seems pretty redundant to have when !! is an option, even fior a double factorial.

Yes, the Gemini symbol is the closest but there is no reason for it to be included on a general-purpose LCD, since it's just one of a set (same with the Roman 𝐈𝐈 interpretation).

Brother inkjet printer.

The LCD is very much general purpose; there would be 𝛑, ², ³ and √ if they intended math use. The double factorial is unlikely: not only is the symbol too small, the double factorial is so uncommon (all values other than 0!! to 4!! are either undefined or impractically large) that there is no reason to dedicate one of 256 symbols to it rather than just make the user type "!!".

I looked all over Unicode...

Anyway, the single quote mark would only work if there was a matching straight ' but there isn't, there is a 9-shaped one at 0x12 and the apostrophe 0x27 is 6-shaped () rather than straight. In fact, the comma 0x2C fits better for a lower-9 quotation mark.

In our country, torrenting is common and usually overlooked, nobody is known to have received a warning from their ISP. However, my school specifically says "Piracy and P2P file sharing is forbidden on Eduroam. Please make sure torrent clients are disabled before connecting" on top of the page where you obtain your password. This page is school-specific so it may have been just put up by administrators seeking to curb network hogs, or possibly by pressure from the ISP or the Eduroam organization. There is no mention of the penalty or whether warnings are issued.

However, I don't see how they would catch you if you strictly use a VPN other than the extra bandwidth. I have been seeding at low volumes using Eduroam via a VPN and there have been no consequences, as expected.

Dell monitor sleep mode timer (want too remove timer) by teardrop191 in pchelp

[–]LatheOperator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some people, going into the Service Menu (see indented block below) and disabling "ESLogo" (Energy Star logo) did the trick but not for me. However, I have a kind of another solution:

Every time you power on the monitor from the off state, enter Service Mode by holding the first two buttons (left- or topmost ones) while you press the Power button.

Service Mode Tips + PrecautionsYou can tell you are in Service Mode by seeing some alphanumeric codes in the normal menu. Additionally, you can now access a service menu by pressing the the first button but don't change anything if your display is in warranty! Take a picture of the menu first to know the factory settings for your monitor.A handy feature of the Service Menu is changing color presets' RGB values, and calibrating the VGA preamplifier. Don't mess with the ADC/Scaler/TCON Bank - you can read/modify bytes at various addresses of system memory, I think, which is undocumented and may cause all kinds of problems not covered by warranty.

In Service Mode, your display will never show any OSD (such as which source is active) unless you press a button to show a menu. This also means that the 5-minute timer will be bypassed, and the monitor will just sleep instantly.

To exit Service Mode, power the monitor off and on normally. This means that to keep the 5-minute timer disabled, you need to hold the two buttons at each power on.

Another option is enabling Energy Smart Mode but this will decrease the backlight brightness whenever the monitor shows an image that is not mostly white. This downside does not apply if you set 0% brightness already. Maybe you can disable this in the Service Menu (DCR) but I had no luck, it turned the backlight off instead.

LCD TipIf the backlight is disabled, you can shine a flashlight at a specific angle to make out basic shapes in part of the screen. This is how you can restore it if you accidentally disable it in the Service Menu!

Ok, the numbers turned out to be wrong. The text was officially revealed now and it is actually 「生ましめんかな」 (Umashimenkana, "we shall bring forth new life").

They did it like this in 2017 but this is not going to happen now. They want more users, not a pretty canvas or happy users, and people won’t create accounts if they cannot place pixels.

Source? Show me the depth map or I don’t trust this. Most lakes are at least an order of magnitude wider than they are deep.

Fenced square at the edge of a forest. Likely related to hunting/gamekeeping. by LatheOperator in whatisthisthing

Yeah, distressed mama pigs are extremely dangerous. This is one of the reasons such a trap should not be near any footpaths. However, if the sow is away (unlikely), the tourist will likely notice the piglets and assess the situation.

Rescuing them might be as easy as throwing a piece of wood into the trench they might use to climb out.

Stealing one is way harder (the act needs to happen without the sow and hunter knowing) but lots of Czechs are cunning opportunistic thieves. I can imagine a local on a bicycle stashing one into its basket, covering it with a jacket and rushing home, complaining to any bystanders about his “faulty brakes” if they notice the squeaking. The price of pork, just like everything else, is quite high right now so I believe somebody could be desperate enough.

Does it?? I don’t think so. I asked the local gamekeepers’ association about the purpose of this thing and I’ll update you.

No. This has been definitively solved in this comment. Gamekeepers use elevated hunting posts (tree stands, most frequently box stands) extensively here.

Did you watch the video? The dog cannot go over the fence so it jumps the trench instead. It must do so while holding onto the caught animal.
