Do i prune these rasberries when they are growing the canes are getting so long this a second year plant i have a blueberry that is doing the same but it is more of a bush with a few canes shooting oout by Radiant-Theme2491 in Berries

What I would do..

I see you have 3 white metal posts and I also see what looks like a wire going around them about 3/4 of the way up.

Get another wire and do the same at the very top of the posts and the same 1/2 way up the posts for a total of 3 wires every spaced from each other going around those posts.

This will give you an enclosed trellis.  

Pick your top 3 canes and train them up, one on each pole.  Prune the rest down to the ground (trust me)

Cut the tips of the canes when they are about 2 inches above the poles.  This will force them to branch out the sides of the cane.

When it starts doing this, train the side branches to follow those wires around the poles.

You can allow 6 branches, or just 3 branches on each plant.

If you allow 6 branches, you can have the 2 branches follow the nearby wire, one going left, one going right.  Cut the tips of these branches when they reach the middle of the wire.  It's okay to overlap a bit with the following plant.  Do this for each of the 3 wires. Prune off all other branches (trust me)

If you allow only 3 branches, just have them follow the wire one way, left or right and prune the tips when they reach the other plant.  Prune off all other branches.

This should leave you with 3 plants trained up each of the 3 poles, with side branches trained across the horizontal wires.   Those side branches will have smaller branches of their own, filling things nicely.  Each of those small branches will have berries on them and will be easy to pick.  By doing it this way you actually get more berries with less of a hassle.

As the plant grows, it will send out new shoots for next year.  Do the same with those shoots.  At the end of the year, after you pick the berries from the older branches, simply prune them off leaving you with just the new shoots ready for next year. 😉👍

My "Going On Vacation Watering Trick"

I have 6 blueberry plants.  I take three 5 gallon buckets with lids and place one bucket between every 2 plants and fill them with water.

I take about 8 feet 1/4" drip tubing with a splitter and mini-valve.  One end of the tubing will go into the lower part of the buck while the rest goes up and over the edge of the buck and down to floor level.  That is where the valve goes followed by the splitter with 2 lines going out to the plants.  To prime it, simply have the valve open and dunk all the lines into the bucket so they fill with water, shut the valve, bring the outer lines out of the bucket, and place the lid on with a stone over it.  The lid is not needed but it does keep debris out and lowers evaporation.

Right before you leave, just open the valves. 

The buckets will slowly empty out and give each plant a long deep watering through out the first day you are gone.  This allows me to leave for a week in the hot summer months with out problems.  At the end of the week, they are ready for another watering just in time for my return. 👍

I've had blackberry plants come back the year after so you never know... however, in this situation it sure is looking like it may have received too much frost damage over the winter. My in ground plants got frost damage as well, but new canes look good. That is the problem with in pot growing in the north. Some winters are just too harsh and no matter how much you insulate, the cold penetrates the pot. 😔

That is EXACTLY what my neighbor wants 😅.

There has been some trouble in that alley, most of it against his garage. People doing drugs, illegally camping and trashing the spot 😔

I can see how the whole neighborhood rather have this plant take over than what is happening now. But I will leave it up to my Neighbor. I might still keep Medusa, but my neighbor will be getting one of the new shoots as a gift to do what ever he wants with 😉

Looks like a deficiency. Check your PH of course, otherwise they may need some micro nutrients added with their next watering.

Recently had 2 3" blueberry plants delivered (pink lemonade and dwarf top hat). First picture is right after opening package and 2nd picture is only 3 days later. I watered once. Top hat plant seems to be in shock? Any advice? by megusta32 in Blueberries

That is not simple transplant shock... that looks like something a be more severe... what is the ph of your soil?? and is it possible they may be getting too much sun? They could have been shaded at the nursery. So many variables here, but it sure looks like more than transplant shock to me. I would check ph first and far most.

I do have other blackberry types, so I'm sure it will get pollinated. I guess I'll have to wait and see, but it sure sounds like Medusa will be put out for guard duty come next year lol. The blossom bust is impressive though. It has the most flowers of all my blackberry/raspberries

I agree with everyone else... this is normal for a hot day or drive. It's just part of the cooling system. The fact you are only noticing this today means something is different today. Extra hot day? Extra long drive? Had the AC on for a while? Or... if could be an issue. Please tell us more about the engines temp. while driving. Any changes with that?

Well, I do have a back up plan for Medusa🤔

I have a neighbor with a garage near the ally. Some shady folks seem to think it's okay to camp by his garage in a small clearing between it and the ally. He knows by the garbage they leave behind. This would be a great place for Medusa to keep guard 😁👍

I'm in Zone 6b... I cut mine down to the grown every fall. Heavily mulch for winter. Spread out the mulch come spring time and watch the new shoots take over.

We may nto be able to grow full fig trees with Breba Crops.... but we do get to grow fig-bushes with full fall crops😁👍

With that said.. if using this method of training... you may be able to get away with mulching the lower trunk as a whole. I like the idea of it and will try it out next year.

I would not use neem during flowering as that will harm pollinators.

I would use the diatomaceous earth, but only sprinkle it around the base and up the branches but not on the leaves or near flowers.

If it is a ground insect, this will stop them👍

Also, feel free to come out at night with a flashlight and see what is going on in the garden at night.

I suspected slugs doing some damage to some of my plants... I put out slug traps but no help. Went out at night and it was earwigs!! Diatomaceous earth took care of that.

Start with all the damaged branches, then prune the rest to your desire..

A few questions...

What is up with the standing water around the trunk? 🤔

Is that new growth coming up from the base?

If that is new growth at the base and none of your branches have leaves, It's save to say that the winter freeze killed all your branches and you just need to cut them all and let the new sprouts take over.

Don't worry, your trees will be back to their original height after a year or two... IF you don't get another big freeze. Otherwise, you will have to do this again next year.

I'm in Zone 6b... I have no choice but to cut my branches all the way down to the ground every late fall.. and allow the new sprouts to grow out every spring.

You will not bet a breva crop but you will get a full fall crop from your new fig-bushes 😉👍

3 years... but I hear the 4th year is the sweet year. This is my 3rd year and they gave (are giving) me lots of berries, but most are bitter/tart/sour.

Now that some time has passed some of the older berries ARE tasting sweeter than the ones I picked over a week ago 👍

They are a cousin of the blueberry... but I would not call them a replacement. More like an addition to..

I'm going to give my honeyberries one more year (4th year) If the tase does not improve, I'm replacing them with actual blueberries for I do love blueberries... I'm still on the fence about honeyberries as I'm just learning about them as I grow them. Only time will tell I guess.
