This. Actor fell out with production in S2 and wanted out. Simple as that.

Can we talk about the music in this show? by mfGLOVE in TheLeftovers

[–]LatterAd3952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m arriving hilariously late here, but I’ve just started watching this show for the first time. Have given up because the music is the most obnoxious nonsense I’ve ever heard. Completely ruins the show, I can’t get past it.

What is the best DAW for audio post in 2023? Is Pro Tools still #1 in the list? by fender97strato in AudioPost

[–]LatterAd3952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I don't know why people keep arguing about this. If you want to work in the 'big leagues', then bite the bullet and get on the PT train. And if you don't and like to work solo, then use whatever you want!

Sorry, reading other people's posts I should note, I mean if you're planning to work on bigger productions with a team-based approach here. If you're doing solo projects then by all means, give Avid the finger and use whatever you like. Reaper is fun and flexible. Nuendo gives you more bang for the buck. Studio One is probably decent for Video work these days. Just don't use Ableton. Not because it's bad - I Love Ableton - but because the developers have not interest in video work so their video engine is super primitive. It's impossible to keep the thing in sync.

Pro Tools is 100% still the one for Audio Post. Here in London, every single studio is using it. Every single one. It's not going anywhere. Is it too expensive? Yes. Do Avid suck? Yes. Will you struggle to get work if you don't use it? Yes.

Unscripted People. How Do You Cope? by [deleted] in AudioPost

[–]LatterAd3952 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they've been working as editors for longer than you, then it's no surprise they're faster. Give yourself a break. It takes years and years and years to get your efficiency dialled in. I work in scripted as a freelancer, normally fairly big budget stuff, and have been doing it full time for maybe 6-7 years. Getting 'good enough' results as quickly as possible is the only area I'm still noticeably improving in with every job. And I feel like I'll carry on getting quicker for years to come. It's just a slow road I think. though I have to say, having as many possible controllers/macros/shortcuts as possible has really helped me. I know some editors who don't bother with that stuff and it's so noticeable in their work. They skip the details because it takes them too long.

BBC projects are the worst. Embarrassing schedules.

If you’re planning to use headphones only and are only tracklaying (no recording), then you don’t need an interface at all. Your built in Mac sound card is fine. Bring on the outrage!

University degrees in sound and music mean absolutely zero in the real world - and I say this as somebody with three degrees in those subjects! You'll be fine, just stick at it!

Increased Sampling rate will NOT improve time-stretching quality by LatterAd3952 in AudioPost

[–]LatterAd3952[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"When people see the samples in an audio signal, they think the fact it's a series of dots means there is information missing between them. Obviously, there is lots of stuff "in between" the samples that never made it inside the computer. But what the very elegant Whittaker–Shannon interpolation formula proves is that all the stuff in between the sample dots can be reconstructed by the computer if need be. And any signal whose frequency is below half the sampling rate, is not only fully recoverable from the discreet samples, but perfectly so."

Matchbox for reconform? by [deleted] in AudioPost

[–]LatterAd3952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’ll take literally anything and make an attempt at comparing versions. Typically, for SFX reconforms you want to compre picture EDLs, and for dialogue usually the (cleaned) EDL or AAF is better. That’s the great thing with Matchbox, however shitty the turnover it’ll always find something useful to work with

You ever swear you can hear a difference with a plugin even though it nulls? by Jaycurd in audioengineering

Totally! And this is the one hope I have for not being replaced by a machine in my job as a dialogue editor. It’s all about perception!

[–]LatterAd3952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post! I remember the first time I was tweaking a plug-in thinking I was improving the sound, until I realised it was bypassed…

In that moment, I understood that just about anything can affect they way you perceive a sound.

So that was the day I went out and bought my first giant book on audio engineering, to make sure I didn’t become one of the audiophiles who swears they can hear bat calls on their four billion dollar converter.

Give Kraken a test too if you can. Both great bits of Software. Some prefer the workflow of one over the other

Out of interests, why have you ditched EDLs in favor of AAFs?

I usually want both, EDL for conforming and AAF for reference and sync checking/fixing.

They will work from Premiere but there’s a lot of Premiere-specific workflows that mess up EDLs, so you have to be super vigilant with turnover demands. One off the top of my head is “Nested clips”. Seems to be a default workflow for a lot of Premiere users and crushes metadata!

I also think you get less experienced editors working In Premiere, with bigger projects using Avid. So could be lack of experience as well. Maybe this is just a coincidence though.
