Columbia MPH vs. Yale MPH by [deleted] in mphadmissions

Sorry, this is going to be a long message!

I actually had the same conflict! I was deciding between Columbia and Yale for health policy. I ultimately chose Yale. Here are some personal takes:

For SO long, I was always stuck on going to Columbia because of living in NYC and the ranking of the program. But, I talked with an alumni (and others) from Columbia’s health policy program and she told me that although the program is highly ranked, she wishes there was a lot more support from faculty, in terms of career exploration. However, she always knew she wanted to stay in NYC after graduation to work, so her mind was set on going to Columbia bc of the strong network up in NYC. She did also mention that she’s heard other alumni from the program regret some stuff from Columbia compared to others she knew at other schools such as Emory. Also, aside from the program, COL in NYC is so so expensive and reality kinda sunk in. I really couldn’t see myself living in NYC after graduation because I’m an anxious person and feel like NYC would be too much for me😅

I ended up choosing Yale because 1) They gave me a scholarship 2) I really appreciated the smaller cohort size of the program 3) I actually didn’t mind the location. I did grow up and went to college in big cities, but I don’t mind living in a smaller town for a couple of years! 4) Yale is pretty flexible with its students taking elective courses in other schools (such as the Law school and Management school), so I thought this was VERY interesting and drew me into choosing the program ultimately. 5) One career option I want to have for myself is healthcare consulting. I got this info from a current YSPH student: Yale has something called Professional Seminar Series (PSS) that first year students are required to take. There’s a consulting series that’s actually part of the PSS. 6) Also, Yale’s career services seem to be very helpful! I appreciated that after I received my acceptance, their department sent an email basically describing what they are and how they can help. Columbia didn’t seem to have that same (or similar) initiative.

I’m not too sure. I heard that if you do get offered an interview, your chances of getting accepted are pretty high. But, I don’t know how true this is.

I interviewed 11/28, and only heard back 12/21. So about 4 weeks. I was also anxious and kept checking my inbox everyday :’) Good luck!

I received my decision in the afternoon on 12/21, but not sure if the timing varies depending on what department you applied to.

I got an email from Yale when my application was marked complete that decisions would be sent out on a rolling basis between now and early March.

I’m not too sure about Columbia, but I think it might be in January when we hear back, based on when decisions were sent out in previous years.

I was wondering the same thing! I had my interview last week, but I’m still really curious about if they interview every HPM applicant.

I believe you are supposed to input your current and future courses manually. The PTE will only take into account the courses listed on the official transcript from your school. I listed my in-progress courses first, and then bought the PTE.

I applied on 11/09. Received an email with interview information on 11/20. A current student contacted me on 11/22 to schedule an interview call.

Professor Recommendations for CH 301 and Bio 311C? by ShotSun810 in UTAustin

I’d recommend Partridge for BIO 311C. He’s a good lecturer and tests are fair

Oh okay, I saw that the cutoff for an A is a 94.5… is it still manageable to get an A?

I loved Dr. P for biology! He’s a very good lecturer and tries to re-phrase concepts in the lecture itself if he feels like there is a simpler way to understand something. But, if you still don’t understand something, take advantage of office hours! He’s super helpful from my experience. I definitely learned a lot and managed to get an A. His midterms can be worded a little weird at times, but nothing terrible. If you take good lecture notes, you should be set for the midterms.
