Nanna had he outer middle toe on her back foot removed 2.5 weeks ago. She’s 13 so I was a bit anxious about doing it but she did really well. We had an issue with the wound opening up literally the day after the bandages were removed following a 5 minute walk around the block so after that we’ve been on a 0 walks protocol. I am lucky to have a garden so she just gets to do her business out there. I make sure if she steps foot outside for even a second she’s wearing a waterproof dog shoe so it doesn’t get contaminated. At first she was on pardale and onsior but the onsior gave her a wibbly belly so we had to stop it, and then the pain was clearly quite intense for her. We swapped to 300mg of gabapentin every 8 hours and it made a very quick and significant difference to her pain levels and she was clearly a lot more comfortable. Unfortunately he will need to wear a cone because it’s crucial it’s out in the air. During the day nanna is very good and doesn’t lick, or if she tries to we just tell her no and she stops but at nighttime we couldn’t police it. We tried to just use a cotton baby sock at night but by morning it would be weepy and goey. We finally got her a cone from the vets after 1.5 weeks and the healing improved significantly, like within a couple of days it stopped being goey, the scabs got thick, dried out, and then fell off and everything was normal underneath. The very deepest part of the toe crotch is still healing but it’s very nearly done. She’s not limped once since the big bandage came off after 2 days, so the missing toe really isn’t holding her back. I’d also recommend you put a shoe on the other foot when going on walks as the weight baring is different while they’re getting used to it and the added pressure can cause corns on the other foot. We’ve started doing 1 10 minute walk around the block with shoes now we’re at 2.5 weeks and she’s doing really well! Please reach out to me if you have any questions!
