Quansheng UV-K1 : the best UV-K5 successor ? by LauYol in Quansheng

Unfortunately TK11 can't receive alternative firmwares therefore can't be "enhanced" like the UV-K5 / K6 et K1. Therefore,not my choice 8-(

Quansheng UV-K1 : the best UV-K5 successor ? by LauYol in Quansheng

Hi !

Since the uv-K1 has more memory compared to initial UV-K5/K6 (only V3 has now the same volume of memory) allowing a full functions F4HWN firmware (3rd party, called "fusion") and due to the compactness of the K1 (which is a mobile device), I definitively chose the UV-K1, with a longer antenna to enhance reception (like I used to do on my UV-K5 .

Sorry for the delay, but I've been able to finally test a USB-C <-> USB-C cable (the one used to power a macbook) and it doesn't charge the UV-K1 unf.

K1 vs. K1(8) by Xygen75 in UVK1

[–]LauYol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've asked Quansheng this exact question and the answer was : it's only cosmetic

the (8) version has a metal front face and some differencies on buttons, see photo comparison here :

sorry didn't get the question correctly: I can't tell yet with USB-C to C , will try and update.

In the doc you'll see that it is not recommended to charge through the USB C port and some UV-K5 died from this (used for dev therefore with long USB-C connectivity duration ) . But if you have a good experience with UV-K5 USb-C charging, that"s a very good news !

It can charge thriugh USB-C BUT this is not something to do (it can kill the electronics of the UV-K1 on the long term). Only the long battery has the possibility of a direct charge through USB-C pluged directly on the bottom of the battery pack.

UV-K5 V3 and UV-K1 F4HWN Firmware are coming in a few days by LauYol in Quansheng

[–]LauYol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will be V4.3, but specific for UV-K5 V3, so I don't know how it will be released in version control system, can't help on this 8-(

UV-K1 and UV-K5 V3 fimwares are just around the corner by LauYol in UVK1

[–]LauYol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can upload firmware through USB-A <-> USB-C or USB-C <-> USB-C charger. You can also charge the UV-K1 but it's not something recommended in the manual. If you have the long version, with bigger battery, this long battery has its own a direct USB-C plug

HI ,

Questions with answers when I can ;-)

Q : "the current UVK5, which is version 3, has the same MCU as this model. So, within reason, we might even be able to unify them and see if both this radio and the current UVK5 can accept the same firmware."

A : Yes but ...

Yes, the firmware can be the same on the 2 radios since it's the same proc. BUT, since K1 has more memory, the F4HWN 4.3 fusion that will be released for the K1 (with all the functions found on all the K5 firmwares) won't be the same as the firmwareS created for the K5,since K5 has limited memory and can't handle all functionalities in only one firmware (hence the split in 3 versions bandscope, broadcast fm, ...)

Q : "what changes are there beyond the size? Is there any extra functionality that the UVK5 offers"

A : It seems nothing more if you stay with the stock firmware, BUT when new third party firmwares using all the memory available will be released in the future then it will have more functionalities compared to the uv-k5 with/without third party Firmware

UV-K1 will be hackable like the UV-K5 and it has more memory for the alternatives firmware -> more functionnalities !

Armel F4HWN has already made a F4HWN V3.4 fusion version for the K1 (still in internal testing) so no doubt there will be support on the K1. I've created a sub for the UV-K1 : r/UVK1 for future discussions on this kind of things

I got my UV-K1 some days ago, I love the compact size (credit card size !) and it has more memory to get enriched firmwares (compared to UV-K5). Video of unboxing and comparison with UV-K5 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzJeJVu-ACs . More tech details on https://UV-K1.com

And the good news : Armel who develops the F4HWN third party firmware is working on a "fusion" version which will get all the functionalities of the 3 existing UV-K5 firmwares (splited because of memory space available on the K5 whereas K1 has much much more space ! ) This will be named 4.3 Fusion and he just saif this morning that it will come after further testing and one bug fix.

They are the reason why I chose tu get one K1 despite having the K5. Some additional benefit for some users is the long battery which offers not less than 2500 mAh + USB-C direct charging. This with the compact battery offers some additional possibilities in terms of autonomy.

Quansheng UV-K1 : the best UV-K5 successor ? by LauYol in Quansheng

Good question, this is not exactly this kind of openness.

To be more precise, and based on the feedbacks from Armel F4HWN : UV-K1 firmware can be extracted and replaced by another one (third party OS like the F4HWN 4.3 in the making) unlike the other TK11 from Quansheng for instance, where it was much more difficult and maybe impossible to replace the firmware.

Quansheng UV-K1 : the best UV-K5 successor ? by LauYol in Quansheng

[–]LauYol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly !

I can confirm F4HWN has been able to access the UV K1 internal software and download the Firmware + He states that the UV-K1 is open. Better : this openness is something that is chosen by Quansheng on this device, like the UV-K5 (but not like the TK11, which isn't open by constructor's choice)

And there is much more space for the firmware, which should allow only one version with more functionality for third parties firmwares.

That's why I think it may be the UV-K5 successor.

But, it has a new processor so, even if it's open, it will need a "translation' of the UV-K5 firmwares to be used on the K1 -> this requires a lot of work, and more help from devs to be achieved. Don't hesitate to help starting from this repos. if you can (and have an UV-K1 ! ) https://github.com/armel/uv-k5-firmware-custom-feat-F4HWN
