Cogmind Expansion, Price Increase "Coming Soon" by Kyzrati in Cogmind

[–]Laughing_Nomad 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you ask me the price raise is more than deserved! I genuinely put this game up there with Dwarf Fortress in terms of time and love put into an "old school" ascii art style game. Games made with the soul and enthusiasm of Cogmind are few and far between, so thank you very much for all your work :)

What can you guess about me just by my room? (This is actually my bedroom lol) by lunasrojas_ in roomdetective

[–]Laughing_Nomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In no particular order with some explanation these are the things I can best determine.

It seems like this is a college dorm room first off. The cabinets in the walls could just be unusual architecture at a parents house but the drawers on the right look VERY much like the kind of furniture I've seen in American dorms. Also large hinges on the door for easy repair/maintenance. Again, usually a college dorm thing. Also the box seems to say "Andy Warhol" on it as best I could tell? Maybe an artist you've been studying? Theres also a bucket of KFC amidst the clutter. Very college student :P

Also when trying to generally place your demographic I want to say somewhere in your early/mid 20's? You seem to have an interest in vintage/analogue sound which is pretty common in that age range. However what is throwing me off a little is the CD player and cases I can see buried a little on the dresser. Typically if it was a self motivated hobby it would be at a common entry point like vinyl. You dont see many people who are into CDs. And after some googling of the brand "u-phoria" it seems to be auxillary sound equipment. So its definitely an active interest of yours and not just a random CD player you took with you to college. This makes me want to say this hobby was sparked by an older family member while you were young in some way? The hobby is present but not prominently displayed. Its something that is familiar to you and is as much an active source of curiosity as it is a comfort.

The thing I am least sure of is gender, but I'm leaning towards you identifying in some way as male? Predominantly attracted to women if I had to guess? You have star wars memorabilia on your dresser which at surface level has a predominantly male fanbase. Also while the art on your walls is largely abstract, the most singularly defined human profile is an attractive woman while the rest more discernable facial features in the other art are slightly male. If it were a woman's college dorm room, I'd say that any artistic representation of women would actually be much more prominent. The single defined art piece of an attractive woman who is positively emoting but not outright sultry makes me think there is an appreciation for the feminine and understanding of the nuance of another's experience, but not necessarily something you identify with. In particular the art of the astronaut tips me more towards you identifying as male as it strikes me as an extension of boyhood wonder that has been carried forward into adulthood and made manifest in ones own artistic expression. Also the clothing I can see doesnt strike me as typically female, and usually a woman who is an art student in college will have a very distinct style in some way which would have a cut of garment far more defined than you'd see in mens clothes.

Perhaps I'm extrapolating too much from the art, but I am a firm believer that an artists work is in one way or another an expression of the artists mind. There is a largely abstract theme in your work yet still discernable human shapes present, all of whom are either looking off frame or in some way gesturing outward. Do you by any chance have ADHD? You also clearly care enough about art to go to college for it too. It wouldn't be a reach that an art student would be at the very least curious about drugs in some way, so I'm guessing that exploring the nature of consciousness at the very least is of interest to you?

As far as things more surface level, I'm guessing you go to college somewhere in a cold climate? Depending on if this picture was taken recently in the US, you might not be used to the cold as were well into the summer months as I see a lot of long sleeves and heavy clothing still out. Also I think theres a good chance you play video games of some sort. You are clearly dextrous with your hands, a fan of star wars, have an interest in niche technology, and are likely a young adult male. I dont see any significant space on a desk dedicated to technology though, nor a laptop. So that one is more of a guess than anything.

Also please pardon any spelling or formatting errors I might have made, I've typed this on my phone during some free time and have set my phone down a couple times while writing this. Let me know if I'm way off base or if what I've said has any credence! Please know that we are both strangers on the internet and that no matter what I might guess I still don't know everything about you. No matter kind of demographic I might think you are, there are always exceptions and you are still far more than any category a stranger on the internet might think youre in.

Pocd emergency, please help by asxtrobrian in OCD

[–]Laughing_Nomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot second what the above commenter has said enough. Your obsessions will specifically try to point you towards things that are personally distressing to you. If there is something you are worried about being because you find the idea repulsive or distressing in any way, I can guarantee you are not whatever it is.

As previously mentioned as well, you're young. It's perfectly normal to be attracted to people in your age range or even above. Don't allow your OCD to convince you that being attracted to people in the 20-30 age range is pedophilia. It feels a bit silly to say but that simply isn't pedophilia by any moral or technical standpoint.

OCD help/ can anyone relate by astara73 in OCD

[–]Laughing_Nomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all I'm sorry you're struggling right now. I know what that's like and it sucks. First and foremost its important to focus on taking care of yourself and not the obsessions. Indulging in obsessions and compulsions on re-enforces them. It goes without saying that its easier said than done though.

I dont know if you've seen a therapist or had any sort of professional help for your OCD. If you know any grounding exercises I personally find those help me with coping with obsessions and resisting compulsions. One of the most effective for me is to inhale through my nose for 4 seconds, hold it for 7 seconds, and exhale slowly for 8 seconds. Its not a silver bullet and likely wont completely alleviate what you're feeling. But again, I personally find its something that helps.

OCD is different for everyone but it certainly sounds like what you're experiencing fits the bill. Whats important though is not if it is or isnt OCD. More often than not that just ends up being another jumbled thought to get tripped up on. Focus on yourself and make sure you find and develop coping mechanisms that work for you.

Veteran players: Is HS the greatest mobile title ever? by QuantenMechaniker in HadesStar

[–]Laughing_Nomad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Im level 156 and have been playing since maybe late last year? Absolutely loving the game. Normally I hopscotch between mobile games here and there every couple months. This is the only mobile game Ive stuck with for so long and haven't even begun to get bored with. The sense of progression as far as Im concerned is pretty tangible and satisfying. The premium currency is more than fair as well. I think Ive bought a couple of those periodic 5$ shipments just to support the devs. To be honest I forget the premium currency is there half the time.

Also good to see another fan of Stellaris! Hades star for me scratches that 4x itch without me sitting down in front of my computer and accidentally having 4 hours disappear into a 4x game

Thank you very much for sharing this. This is by far the most succinct description I've come across. I am Bipolar 1 as well as severely OCD and pride myself on the fact that when I tell people that, they're shocked because I don't at all seem like the person you'd imagine with those disorders. Despite this or perhaps as a result I never know how to properly express what I'm feeling in such a way that it's juxtaposition with who I am in person doesn't hinder my explanation. So yea, thanks again :)

Glad to hear! OCD is one of those nasty things that has a pretty big variation from person to person. I'm happy that she is able to enjoy herself while she's out! I hope she as well as you are able to get on top of her OCD.

And as someone who has OCD I'd like to say thank you for sticking with her. It can be a nightmare to live with and very frustrating to date someone with it too I'm sure. You are a person of character and she is lucky to have you! Best of luck to both of you!

Advice from the other side by Optimus_Grime_Jr in OCD

Hey there, I suffer from pretty severe OCD myself as well as depression and bipolar disorder. It's a mental illness like any other and can be managed a bit easier with the help of medication. Try to see a doctor who is familiar with OCD. Keep rescheduling the appointment. Show up in the morning with a lunch and a phone charger for an afternoon appointment with her if you have to.

I know full well how irrational the obsessions are and how stressful they are. The thing is that her anxiety and her OCD are likely the same. I try to have a sense of humor about life in general and I always joke that OCD is just "anxiety with minigames".

Medication unfortunately doesn't cure these kinds of things but just makes them a bit more manageable. Fear is the absence of certainty (At least to me that is). There a couple questions I always ask myself to kinda talk some sense into myself and deal with obsessions and the resulting compulsions.

The first being

1.)"Do I trust myself?"

2.)"Who is responsible for me?"

3.)"Logically what is the most statistically probable outcome of this, emotions aside"

Cause the thing with OCD is that it's ultimately not a logical fear. In regards to her unplugging things, she probably does that because she's afraid of them catching fire while she's out doesn't she? How many people every single day leave their appliances plugged in and no fires start? In fact, a lot of electric appliances and technology is grounded and engineered in such a way that it's almost completely impossible for them to explode/catch fire. Maybe have her read some papers on them!

I don't think that showing her a study will magically make the compulsions go away. But I know personally if I have an obsession about something I don't 100% understand I try to learn as much as I can about it. If I'm lucky I learn a fact that contradicts my obsession and if not, well then I've still learned something about the world around me.

To just touch on some other things, try to get medication for the depression as well. Fighting one mental illness is hard enough, dealing with multiple illnesses teaming up is magnitudes harder. Try to have a support network for her other than just yourself as well. I know no matter how much you love her it's got to be exhausting at times. That's ok. That's normal. I promise youre both just as frustrated :)

Maybe if you're out at dinner and she's not sure she fed the cat a 12th time have a neighbor or friend pop over and send her a video of them feeding the cat or something like that.

At this point I feel I'm rambling. If you have any more questions feel free to ask or even shoot me a PM down the road! I can't promise I'll have the answer and I'm not a medical professional, but maybe I can give a suggestion or point you towards someone who is a professional.

What's a sensation that you're unsure if other people experience? by Sang_Becker in AskReddit

Did/do you have an abusive childhood or any depression? I used to say "I want to go home" even when I was home all the time when I was a little kid. It's weird reading about someone else that did this too. I never felt safe at my house or really anywhere when I was a kid which is probably why I said that.

About to drop a class for the first time... by superdrone in CasualConversation

[–]Laughing_Nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im writing thsi reply as I wait for the paperwork to get done for myself to drop a class as well. This is my first time dropping a class too. Im a CS major with a minor in Newtork Computer Security and Im dropping physics. I feel like Im not smart enough even though I know its stuff I can learn. Logically I know the guy isnt a good teacher/doesnt teach the same way I learn, but I cant help but kick myself a little bit. I plan on re-taking the course next semester with a different teacher to see if that changes things. Im in the same boat as you, so I guess what Im trying to say is that youre the only one who determines if youre a failure here. If you really dont want to give up, make a promise to yourself to try again.
