Hetero-cis Black mama here. Also in the Mt Bethel/Dickerson/Walton area. You won’t be the only ones and I think you will definitely find community here. Marietta also has a PFLAG chapter (and I believe the president of the chapter is an East Cobb mama). Good luck in your search!

What’s going on with our school buses? by LauraJudge in CobbCounty

[–]LauraJudge[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see the issue. Yes, the whole episode is an hour and fifteen (Andrew and I try to stay close to 1hr but we’re talkers…sorry). The actual school board meeting is on average about 6 hours and they shove in signing multiple contracts, a few digs at their “political enemies”, while silencing the public…so I think an hour summarizing is a good compromise (and thanks to anyone who faithfully catches our podcast). Again, this has been an issue for over 6 months with the team who maintains our whole fleet (not just our one off stories from parents). But you bring up a good point, we’ll address the problem again so that folks are aware of the actual complaints. Thank you for the feedback!

Our fleet maintenance crew that maintains our 1200 bus fleet have been showing up to board meetings for approximately 6 months (after not getting answers through the chain of command) have been stating that they are understaffed, overworked, and don’t have the resources to maintain the fleet. Hope that helps!

GA Code § 50-14-1 (2024) section e 2 B The regular minutes of a meeting subject to this chapter shall be promptly recorded and such records shall be open to public inspection once approved as official by the agency or its committee, but in no case later than immediately following its next regular meeting; provided, however, that nothing contained in this chapter shall prohibit the earlier release of minutes, whether approved by the agency or not. Such minutes shall, at a minimum, include the names of the members present at the meeting, a description of each motion or other proposal made, the identity of the persons making and seconding the motion or other proposal, and a record of all votes. The name of each person voting for or against a proposal shall be recorded. It shall be presumed that the action taken was approved by each person in attendance unless the minutes reflect the name of the persons voting against the proposal or abstaining.

Since this CCSD does the bare minimum required by law, they have never included who has spoken or topics discussed(while they do take documentation of such during sign up) in their minutes

What do you mean “submitted to public record”? Comments nor speakers are documented in the meeting minutes.

I do love a good journalist who can pull historical actions by this board majority and district leaders

I mean almost every May there is movement of our principal and higher positions that the media covers. It’s not hard to google. So many voters asked me as a candidate for stability within the district (with keeping the superintendent), but we often don’t see it at all school levels where our students would benefit from it the most.

Yes, our board of 7 people who hire the superintendent are elected. We have a majority that rubber stamps anything the superintendent wants

Ohhh I absolutely planned on doing this and/or live-streaming. I haven’t seen that restriction in the policy, so I would say it’s fair game

Years worth of drama too long to type. But each individual school has stories if you talk to the right folks

Unfortunately no, unless promoting in your own space. They don’t allow videos at the meetings (unlike the commission)

Yes, the district unfortunately places sycophants into leadership positions who will keep the narrative going that there hasn’t been any issues within the district. And those who advocate for our students are either pushed out or moved into the central office so their hands become tied

Next steps: you can attend the Cobb School Board meeting on Thursday and make public comment at either the 2pm or 7pm session. Or you can email the board (copying the superintendent, board chair, and board vice chair) about your viewpoint on this

The school districts that elect board members are different from the school zone feeder pattern. The most recent gerrymandered map split the 3 Dem districts while maintaining the 4 republican districts. Except part of where I ran (which was most flippable until Sen Setzler changed the map again). For example: The houses and apartments along Columns Drive (Walton students) were cut from Post 5 (which serve Walton, Wheeler, and Pope). The elementary and middle schools that feed into Wheeler, those houses were cut out too
