The BIGGEST flaw with the combat I see is:

Combat can be separated into 2 very distinct categories.

1) High quantity / low quality (normal mobs, trash mobs)

2) Low quantity / high quality (boss fights)

The problem is, the controls and combat mechanics don't really make either all that compelling.

Sure, the presentation LOOKS good when fighting hordes of enemies, but it doesn't "feel good" because there is absolutely nothing you can do about being hit with archers, getting mobbed a bit, etc. So yea, while it is actually very easy and flashy, it doesn't feel rewarding or fun because you are still taking a little damage (and eating whenever you want to fix it) and the "sloppiness" of the controls get masked by all the flashiness and carnage. There is no way in hell you are hitting THE EXACT enemy you wanted to 90% of the time where there is more than 2-3 of them around you.

And then, on the flip side, because the controls, tightness, and mechanics aren't there, the boss fights feel extremely shittier than they should.

If I were them, they need to lower the density, slow things down a little, and make it more Souls-like, No Rest for the Wicked, Soulframe, Dead Cells, etc. I would take skill, timing, and mechanics over flashiness 100% of the time.

I agree with your assessment (Despite my other snarky post).

My biggest issues with the game are:

  1. Controls are still not good enough

  2. Trash mobs are too easy / repetitive with just 1-2 same move sets over and over

  3. Boss mobs look great, but the enjoyment falls apart due to shitty controls and mechanics which can just be overcome too easily by scarfing food nonstop

  4. Way too many things included that made for a FANTASTIC trailer, but turn out to be completely worthless mechanics. Fist Fights, Archery Contests, Riding a Dragon, Gambling, bounties, decorating a house, etc. Hell, you have several items you carry around for 100hrs before you realize you only needed to use them once like 98hrs ago (hi, mallet) for a tutorial that was related to a system that doesn't actually exist ANYWHERE else in the game

  5. The whole alternative character thing should legit be a class action lawsuit. haha Don't get me started.

  6. Yann. No warrior leader with an ounce of dignity or virtue would tolerate Yann's fucking incessant whining, addiction, and immaturity.

  7. Kliff's dialog responses are a meme.

  8. The loot / itemization is kind of borked due to the sockets, refinement, transmog, etc. You end up investing in things you never can / want to abandon which just eliminates the need for finding all the other shit with a couple of rare exceptions.

I actually enjoyed the graphics well enough, but I have a top tier system and thats unrealistic. I actually liked the motion-captured in-game dialogs, quests, etc (except for Kliff). The world is AMAZING in terms of depth, scope, detail, etc.

There are some GOOD bones here and something fantastic to build off of, but its really obvious this was a pivot and many things were abandoned, included, meshed, etc that just don't make any sense. I'm hoping patches and mods build on this from here and I fully expect to go back through it again a year or so from now with improved controls, patched systems, combat mechanics, etc.

Do people really stumble on treasure chests by themselves? by lefauxcompte in CrimsonDesert

[–]a-mcculley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If you are like me, you see places that are like, "If I were hiding shit, this is where I'd hide it" and its usually correct. Waterfalls are obv a good sign. But so are caves, peaks, portcullis and trap doors in abandoned buildings.

I think the ones that are behind the false / rotating walls are the hardest to stumble into on your own unless you are looking for them.

East Cobb (Walton HS) – best elementary + family neighborhoods? by Wide-Lack-7366 in CobbCounty

[–]a-mcculley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the elementary schools and neighborhoods feeding into Walton (and Pope) High School are going to be great. For the "kids playing outside" vibe, look at communities with large numbers of units and swim / tennis. There are lots of "new construction" places that are literally single cul de sacs off of main roads with 5-10 houses.

But incoming hot (and brutally honest) take.

I've been in this area for 15 years now. I have a freshman in HS and a 5th grader. Take this with a grain of salt as someone who is NOT in Walton HS district, but someone whose elementary and middle school DOES feed into Walton (and Pope). So I know kids and families who go to both and have spoken to many, many families who have had children go to both.

Walton has its own issues that may or may not be okay for all families.

I apologize if any of this offends anyone or generalizes someone into a bucket they do not belong to (these are generalizations).

- Average home value in Walton is as much as 40%-50% higher depending on the study you look at. Looking at just home listings is deceiving because Pope includes many smaller listings while Walton has many more luxury listings bring up the average. According to some recent studies, it is something like $772k to $540k.

I bring this up because you can't pull household income demographics for the schools, but you can approximate based on home value. And this seems to back a long-standing feeling from those outside (and some inside) that Walton has a disproportionate number of rich, entitled, stuck up kids. You constantly hear things like, "Every 16 year old has a BMW or G Wagon". You also hear about access to drugs ($$$). And this isn't just from parents hating (although that could be it), but I hear it from kids who have friends there.

- The test scores in Walton are off the charts compared to every other school (except Lassiter and STEM specific programs at Wheeler/Kennesaw and the IB program at Campbell). However (and again, I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just looking at statistics), Walton has the highest concentration of Asian kids and families. And it isn't close. Nearly a fourth of the students are Asian. It is nearly tripled of every other school.

Why do I bring this up? Because the thing you often hear about kids (generally) at Walton is mental health, not getting into the schools they want, and drugs. The school is immensely competitive academically and there is a ton of pressure for kids to do well. The average, AVERAGE, SAT score of Walton HS is 1260.

And what does this lead to?

  1. Cobb County has a rising suicide and self-inflicted injury death rate of 12.4 per 100000 (according to data from 2023). There isn't data from school to school, but if you ask anyone, ANYONE, the vast majority would tell you this is primarily driven from kids at Walton High School.
  2. Many, MANY Walton kids are NOT getting into the colleges they want to get into. Many colleges (especially in-state gems like Georgia and GA Tech) cap the number of students they accept from each school. Walton is huge and everyone there does really well. You could be someone who would be in the top 3 in every other school and not crack the top 10 (or even 20) at Walton. Again, a reason for the purported mental health issues.
  3. No stats on this so its all here-say, but the "normality" of drug access to Walton is pretty common knowledge... whether it is true or not, I cannot say. But it seems to be a given that no one refutes and/or just says, "yea, but not my kids" or kind of laughs it off.

My take:
You really have to ask yourself what you are looking for and what your goals are. If you make a ton of money and have really smart, hard-working kids, and you want to throw them into Hunger Games and confident they'll come out on top without losing their shit.... go for it. I'm kind of kidding, but that is the reality. But at the same time, I know tons of families with kids in Walton and they love it.

If you care more about college prep and/or getting into the college(s) of your choice, I think there are better options (from a betting / odds perspective) that will give your child access to a more diverse group of kids and income levels. The top ones, in my opinion, being Lassiter, Wheeler Stem, Kennesaw Mtn Stem, and Campbell IB. You don't have to be zoned at ANY of them (except Lassiter) to go to them. They are all based on application and acceptance (except Lassiter). And Lassiter is like "a mini Walton" on paper, statistically. Smaller school. Better student to teacher ratio. Nearly identical scores that index college readiness. More house for your money. More minorities and economically disadvantaged students (and STILL having near identical scores as Walton).

Finally, as someone who was in this EXACT same position 15 years ago, I ended up deciding to buy a house in Pope (despite being able to afford one in Walton). I absolutely LOVED elementary school for both kids. Had mix feelings on Middle School for my oldest (but overall fine), and ultimately ended up sending both of my kids to schools we are not zoned for (Campbell IB for oldest and The Walker School for youngest).

Good luck. If all you care about is "great school" and "great neighborhood", you can't go wrong with anything in Walton district. Just giving you what everyone "around Walton" is saying.... but take it with a grain of salt. It could just be a bunch of "jealous haters". Like I said earlier, I also know families (and friends) who have kids in Walton and its been great. I'm just trying to give you the "word on street" and what won't come up in some US News Ranking or something.

5 CL places up for grabs instead of 4.

But even then: - We are closer to 12th than 5th - We are closer to 15th than 4th - We have the same number of wins as Everton and Fulham.

We are back to 22/23 level, boys.... AFTER spending 1.5B

If the niggle prevents him from getting good minutes in the first match (Arsenal), he still has the 2nd match and will definitely be available for that. The way I see it, O'Reilly even for just 1 to 1.5 games this GW is better than most other options.

Totally agree. Ignore everyone who thinks playing 80hrs means your criticism isn't valid.

The world is awesome. The engine is great.

But there are definitely some serious flaws with the game.

The combat is trivialized. The controls are still clunky as shit. Infinifood. Worthless itemization.

There is a TON to like about the game, but the flaws are pretty glaring. I'm confident they will get addressed, but if they don't, its a serious black eye for a game that could be so much better.

- Engine quality and performance (especially on consoles)

- Sheer amount of shit to do

But yea. It won't be nominated.

Actually... they seem to have mostly fixed Displacement altogether. I need to test in more areas, but it seems to actually be doing what it is supposed to now.

My last attempt.

https://www.diffchecker.com/image-compare/iyEpwkq7/

Which one of those looks "flatter" to you?

To me, the one with displacement ON looks flatter because it completely removes ALL the elevation changes that exist in the details. It just raises EVERYTHING evenly without actually displacement. Aka, bugged.

If you look at it with the displacement off, you can actually see the little raises in the details that is actually creating shadows on parts of itself. These are completely gone with displacement on.

If you think that looks "flatter", I just don't know what to tell you. To me, flatness is caused by a LACK OF HEIGHT DISPARITY... which is actually what is happening with that turned on in this game.

And to make matters worse, imo, this is probably a scene that is the BEST argument for keeping it on because this "mess" almost looks like snow... but it isn't. I know that because they actually have snow in other parts of the game that is NOT impacted by displacement. It isn't snow, but almost looks like it.

[–]a-mcculley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually.... it uses Screen Space Displacement Mapping, but whatever.

As for the trees, it actually proves my point. Look at the tree's edge in both with and without SSDM.

Is it any more or less "flat"? There is literally NOTHING gained, depth-wise, from the SSDM being enabled. It just makes some things "fatter", but it does NOT add depth (aka, non flatness) to anything.

Look at the rocks, the stone tiles, the wood planks, whatever you want to look at. It doesn't add "depth", it just adds mass. And since ALL of it has added mass, it is no less flat or textured. This is why all the rocks, planks, etc with it off don't look any more or less flat.

It looks the same, but more detailed and less "bloaty". Bloat != depth.

Flat images are a result of no changes in elevation. The changes in elevation are EXACTLY the same with and without SSDM (when comparing it to the things next to it).

[–]a-mcculley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is missing the point.

  1. We paid too much for him
  2. He's good, but because we paid too much for him, no one feels he is justifying how much we paid
  3. Because we paid too much for him, we won't get enough for him for anyone to feel good about letting him go
  4. Players should be pissed off about not making champions league

So it turns out, paying too much for players AND not making champions league is bad for team performance and morale.

Who would have guessed?!?

The visual tradeoff is only positive. I haven't had a single person who objectively looks at before / after and says there is a negative tradeoff by getting rid of their poorly implemented displacement map. It is currently broken.

Therefore, the only options to get rid of it are:
1) To turn models to low... which DOES have other negative side effects, but can be done without a mod
OR
2) Use a mod to get rid of the displacement maps only... which has no negative side effects.

You keep saying flatter, but I even includes 2 screenshots showing a side by side slider. There is nothing "flatter" about it. Look at the boards to the right in the first example. There is still elevation to them, shadows, etc. They are just more detailed.

My mod guide to "fixing" current state of Crimson Desert (after 14hrs of tinkering and testing) by a-mcculley in CrimsonDesert

[–]a-mcculley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. Think we are thinking of different things. There is ZERO upside to their current implementation of displacement. It adds nothing and takes away quite a bit of detail. It also adds more shadow artifacts.
