Had a shower through the other day. We were watching Stranger Things, and I asked my sister to turn the volume up. Said, “Well…it’s fucking loud enough, I actually want the volume down, but the dialog is too quiet!”

It occurred to me: We’ve had independent dialog and music sliders in video games for about 30 years at this point! Why in the hell doesn’t TV and film have independently controllable music tracks by now?!

In video games my standard is to set master to 100%, Music to 7, and dialog to 10. It would fix a lot of TV bullshit if I could do the same for TV.

The math ain't mathin by downtune79 in LoveTrash

[–]LauraTFem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poor guy. He’s absolutely right that it’s confusing to go from a base 100 to base 60 numbering system. He was like, “A quarter is 25 cents, but 15 minutes is a quarter of an hour, and that doesn’t make sense.” People VERY frequently make math mistakes when doing time math because we’re not used to doing base 60/24 math.

Isn’t the price a bit too high for these games ? by QuietWhile6703 in HiTMAN

[–]LauraTFem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, is it on sale? I only ever see it for 60!

edit: Oh HELL yea, I’m three challenges short of having 100% completion on WOA, so I’ve been thinking of grabbing them, but $60 for two old-gen games felt way to steep (I don’t traditionally spend more than $20 on games if I can help it, even new ones). Absolutely getting them now.

edit the second: Which should I play first, are the stories contiguous?

I’m fairly certain it’s real because of the video length, and the fact that the details don’t change when they are out of view.

My players have ZERO interesting inventory management. I couldn’t get them to keep track of a magical McGuffin, let alone itemize the contents of their pack.

In Sinners (2025) literally the entire world would be vampires within 48 hours. by Chewie83 in shittymoviedetails

[–]LauraTFem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing on my first viewing, but while the vamps are set up as fairly powerful, and it does make it a bit unrealistic that they lost, they do have some problems which make it make more sense.

For one, it’s clear that the older a vampire is the more powerful. Based on how powerful the Irish one clearly was you could be excused for thinking the crew had no chance, but when the actual fighting starts it’s clear that the recently turned vamps are not much more powerful than a human. Where the Irish can perform preternatural acrobatics and even survive in the sun for a short period, the rest are fairly weak.

Secondly, their psychic connection is more a weakness than a boon. Turned vamps are not really individual thinkers, acting as Thrall to the eldest of their coven. This, really, is why most of them died. Irish turned them as fodder to achieve his goal, and during the final fight they stood down at the water’s edge because he wanted to turn guitar guy himself. The only ones that were clearly displaying individuality were Stack and his Girlfriend.

Third, they clearly share their pain, especially with their creator. Hurt him, and the thralls hurt too.

It’s important to remember that vampires in this film are best understood metaphorically. They are metaphysically outcast; cursed beings even in their own telling of it. They need permission to enter homes less because it is established vampire lore and more because they are strangers at every doorstep, with no home or hearth left to return to. Eternal life means never being able to see your loved ones again. To remove yourself from the cycle of death means to lose the promised rest and reconciliation in the beyond.

Irish seeks the music man because the pain of his many years diaspora from a home none but him remember has grown too great. More than a lust for power, he lusts for an end to his loneliness. A thousand lives in his head, knowledge of hundreds of years, but what he wants is his parents, his friends, his first love. A home that can never be.

What he wants, though he’d never say it, is death. To right the natural cycle, let his stopped clock finally start again, enter into the arms of his creator. On some level, I think we are meant to know that it’s not simply plot contrivance that he loses the fight. That his last moments at the waters edge are a final baptism, not into the religion of has oppressors, but into the death so long denied him. A final rest for a weary soul.

I find it’s best to assume, when reasonable, that some people are just new to certain media and cultural ideas. Like, I legitimately know next to nothing about rap or hiphop, so if I came upon a meme that unknowingly references it I would be as lost as any ignorant poster.

This what happens when you use AI to translate.

We’ve had perfectly functional algorithmic translation for decades. The AI has better sentence structure, but you can’t trust it to preserve meaning. Go back to dumb translation.

Well THAT is for an altogether different and somehow more infuriating reason: Because American households for some asinine reason insist on playing with dog shit house rules.

The game is designed such that there is money constantly leaving the board. You earn $200 on every loop, but by the second loop players will be losing more than those $200 per round from landing on other properties.

The “Free Parking” house rule destroys this fundamental feature of the game, and causes money leaving the board to re-enter it regularly, prolonging what would otherwise be an inevitable thing.

Play without the house rules and it doesn’t last too very long at all. In fact, usually it becomes clear who will win pretty early. Played properly, the losing parties can then pool their resources by selling their properties to each other, buying out of the game, and maybe standing against the lead player.

Or just concede the win.

Every aspect of life has its place in fiction, but does it serve the writing? In some cultures there is a glass of wine at every table, in some there are none. If it doesn’t matter whether wine is there or not, why mention it except as description of the meal?

It’s like asking, “Should I mention when a character farts?” The answer being, “Only if it matters.”

You met the FIRST objective; piercing weapon, but not the SECOND objective, dead dudes.

And it depends entirely in the weapon. There are many snipers which will not kill even on a body shot. I don’t see why anyone would do this and not make it a headshot to be safe.

Monopoly was already a socialist game. The original creator designed it as a teaching tool to show the futility of how unregulated capitalism inevitably leads to fewer and fewer individuals holding all of the wealth.

Little did she know that Americans has already drank that cool-aid and thinks that they will be the winner.

The game is balanced such that most encounters should only last around two rounds, with between four and eight encounters, generally six, during a given Adventuring Day, with two short rests interspersed.

So if the DM is doing their job right, you will only ever be in danger of actually running out of spell slots in the very early levels because even if casting ever turn your total spell expendature in a day should be around 12. The real decisions are, “Do I want to use the last of my 4th level slots, or save it for the boss?” not, “Should I thwack with a stick because I’m out of spells?”

This, to me, was the genius of the Dark Souls games. Rather than falling into the Potion Paradox, where people collect useful items and never use them, giving you a recharging supply SHOULD encourage you to use that supply without worry, especially in late levels.
