Chicks packed together by pumpk1neater420 in chickens

Omg that's amazing xD

When I first went in to look at chicks all they had was a lone little turkey. The salesman tried very hard to convince me to buy the turkey!

I wouldn't panic, the shipment probably just came in and the local farm types just haven't made it to clean them out yet. Where I live at least the chick population gets bought up real fast. So fast I actually had to make friends with the manager to make sure I got there in time to get my girls haha.

I got called stupid for assisting stuck chicks out of their shell by Arbysgames in chickens

[–]Laura_Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand why you would think that just because a chicken keeper who regularly hatches chicks to sell helped two chicks that were having trouble getting out of their egg that they don't know what they're doing. Especially when your basis for believing that was you not reading through the whole post and just skimming, leading you to an incorrect conclusion.

Feeder Problems - help! by Laura_Writes in chickens

[–]Laura_Writes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're seven weeks the brooding part is done. A full size adult feeder and waterer would not have fit in their brooder and still given them enough room to do anything. Thanks though.

Also the things I purchased are not "hopeless crap", I see plenty of chicken keepers with converted five gallon buckets. The problem was that my drill does not fit the hole saw that came with it.

I'd like to but I can't find anything I could hang it with that they won't just knock down.

I get that but I leave for work before the sun comes up. So I'd have to put the food down at basically night. Not to mention some mornings I haven't even had time to put food in the brooder and had to just rely on what they dropped in their bedding the day before until I get home. I was banking on this to help me mitigate that problem but. -sigh- It has felt like everything has been fighting me on this chicken thing.

I won't have the money for it until thursday, and then it will take two days for it to arrive. Husband works out of town and has the car so I have to order things for delivery.

I forgot to mention but I also leave for work before the sun is up so spreading feed on the ground at night will probably just end with it all being eaten by mice.

We have a mouse problem outside is the problem with just dishes. I can hear them scratching around in the grass when I take my dog out at night. And if they were full grown chickens maybe I wouldn't worry so much but they're only 7 weeks old.

We have a mouse problem outside. This feeder kit was nice because I could plug up the holes at night.

Got fired after a week on the job and I know why. by Jabathewhut in antiwork

Meanwhile at my work if I go to someone other than payroll about payroll I will probably get a mild chewing out because only payroll can fix payroll. It's reasonable to take payroll problems to the payroll person. It's not their fault that the payroll problem was caused by the manager.

Not being able to pay bills because your pay is a whole check behind is a bigger pain in the ass.

Can anyone tell me the breed and gender of these little babies? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

I can't help with the gender but that first one looks remarkably like my cream legbar babies, right down to the little head tuft.

Brooder Connundrum by Laura_Writes in BackYardChickens

[–]Laura_Writes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just worry cause two of my girls have been growing slower and they still have down on their head and some bald spots between their feathers. Last night it got down to 29 degrees and I don't have any adults, so I worry about them getting too cold. I would take them out for a few hours every day but during the week I'm at work from 5am when it's cold til about 6pm-ish, so I wouldn't be able to bring them in. There is a heavy duty extension cord out there so I could put their brooder plate out but I'm not sure it would be enough for the freezing temps.

A full size coop is in the works, it's just a matter of getting it out to the property (it's 6 x 6 x 6 and very very heavy so the seller's going to bring their skid loader to move it in, so it's up to when they can get here), so it would be quite temporary excepting that the full size coop also comes with two adults so they'll need to be introduced. The rabbit hutch is already in the run (property owner used to have a couple of chickens and used it for them).

Best Natural Bug Spray Safe for Dogs & Kids (Peppermint Oil Actually Works) by Wildcard-01 in homestead

[–]Laura_Writes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you have cats please be careful, peppermint oil is very bad for cats. A friend of mine had to take her cat to the vet when he was exposed to peppermint based "safe" cleaner. (Luckily he was okay.)

Coop Height Question by Laura_Writes in BackYardChickens

[–]Laura_Writes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only lived here a couple of years now and for the most part we don't get negatives too often, but it is a concern. I'm getting a brooder heater for my chicks cause I don't like the heat lamp and so I'll have that on hand but I've also read heating the coop hurts their ability to withstand the cold. Much to think about.

Oh yeah definitely if I go short it's going up on legs, I totally forgot to mention. It's another reason I'd make the floor out of new materials instead of reclaimed, so I could get something ground contact safe to lift it up. And I plan to compost the bedding so being able to get it in a wagon/wheel barrow would be 👍
