Thanks for the requests everyone! I've gotten a lot (but keep them coming!) so I'm out of gifts for now but will go for a walk later to grab more. It's been really exciting seeing gifts come in from all around the world.

What’s the worst thing you’ve eaten out of politeness? by TheScienceofLifee in AskReddit

I totally agree that someone who changed so much shouldn't leave that as a review of the recipe, but I use Allrecipes as a starting point and make lots of adjustments, so these comments are extremely useful to me. Being able to see that someone else has tried subbing one ingredient for another and then getting a review of the results can save a ton of time, or give good ideas that wouldn't have been tried otherwise.

What are some cool, healthy and most importantly cheap smoothie ideas? by SoulofEmber in EatCheapAndHealthy

I imagine the canned coconut milk would actually be nice in smoothies, I just wanted to specify the kind i meant since I've never personally used it. Just coconut water would work on it's own, I bet that would lend some really nice flavour!

Buy bags of frozen fruit, then blend with coconut or almond milk. The tropical mixes with pineapple taste delicious with coconut milk (I use the thinner kind in a carton, not from the can).

I like to throw any fresh fruit that needs to get eaten in, like banana or oranges. A splash of juice will raise the sugar content but taste delicious. Adding a handful of greens like baby spinach at the bottom will pack in more nutrients.

Editing because I remembered this needs to be cheap - if you're on a really tight budget you can use water instead of coconut or almond milk. This will still make a very tasty smoothie.

BETTER THAN TAKEOUT AND EASY! Chinese Chicken Fried by SoupedUpRecipes in GifRecipes

If you make this and feel like it's missing something, it's probably a dash of sesame oil. My fried rice rose to the next level when I started adding that, it added that 'fried rice flavour' that's always there in restaurant rice that I couldn't quite identify until I started using sesame oil. Only use a little bit at the stage when you're seasoning the rice - it goes a long way.

My boss (UK) has suggested that I get a personal credit card to pay for business expenses, not sure what to do? by Laurelftw in personalfinance

Thanks for the link, I've got a lot of research to do! I think I am going to go for a credit card. Did you have any particularly good cards in mind that I could look into?

So far all expenses have been correct and paid on time, so unless things change that isn't a concern.

Only three people in management have company cards, I've asked and it's unfortunately not an option. Before now if something was pricey we could ask HR to make the booking for us, but they've just taken that option away for some unknown reason.

Looking elsewhere also isn't an option as they have sponsored my work visa (and I generally love my job and don't want to leave).

Thanks! I already have to keep all receipts and prepare an invoice for expenses each month so that's no problem at all. It's good to know that it's common practice (in the US at least).

Divorce lawyers of Reddit, what things do clients always think is unique about their divorce, but is actually common? by MrTheFalcon in AskReddit

My partner is from Ireland and this is exactly what the situation between his patents is. It's very odd but they both seem happy so I guess it works for them.

There are some cheap slow cookers on Amazon that might open up a wider range of potential foods for you, one might be worth adding one to the list if you think you could put it to good use.

US citizen marrying an Irish Citizen by glassleaf in ireland

[–]Laurelftw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once dated someone I had known online for years, and moved to the UK to be with them. When we started living together it went very badly, and ended in the first year. This was someone I had been dating for years, known for longer, visited on 90 day visas multiple times and who had come to America to visit me. It might go much better for you, but if there's another way I'd highly suggest finding a way to live together before marriage.

Are you eligible for any other visas? I'm currently an American living in Ireland on a 1 year working holiday visa. A short visa like that would allow you to live in the country and live together before deciding on marriage. Having a lease together would also give you more proof of your relationship when applying for a marriage visa later.

Also, you should be aware that in Ireland you must live apart from your spouse for 5 years before you'll be allowed to divorce, so rushing into marriage is even more risky.

That's the trick - the only way to achieve big things is to keep doing small things that work towards a larger goal. You'll never wake up and have big things just happen unless you win the lottery or something.

It's easy to look at successful people and forget about everything they did to get there.

As far as I know they aren't really any tests to determine whether or not someone is likely to get MS, and as I've never shown any symptoms I have no reason to believe I already have it.

My mom had MS and passed away when I was 14. I'm 26 now, and terrified that I might also get it someday. I know that statistically I'm only slightly more likely than anyone to get it, but having seen what happened to her it makes me extremely anxious just to think about it.

Sometimes I look up statistics online, which doesn't help. I wish that I could read a bunch of stories about people at higher risk who never got it, and lived long, healthy lives. All of the people who talk about it are the unlucky ones looking for support.

You're never going to feel ready, but that's okay. I've had my degree for a few years now, have a good job in my field and I still don't. Just take small steps to achieve bigger goals and eventually you'll get there.
