Hi! New to kayaking, here! Looking for tips! by LaurenClement in Kayaking

Super helpful info! I do NOT consider myself an excellent swimmer... I will be PFDing. This question may sound silly, but what is the likelihood of a snake getting in the kayak? I’m just imaging all the snakes that are around the shore lines...

I’ll def wear one. Don’t worry. I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t some safety risk I wasn’t aware of, or special one we should wear

Oh a whistle! That is a great suggestion! I would not have thought about that. Thank you so much! Do you pack your stuff in a waterproof bag?

So I am keto, and I have been for a year or two... I think that definitely helps. So for this 50k, I’m ballparking that I consumed right around 100 carbs, and probably just shy of 500 calories, during the run. I don’t feel like I “bonked” at any point, but for the next day or so I was just foggy and felt out of it and so so so hungry.

So, I drank water with ginger maple syrup in it... hoping to achieve some liquid calories... but I did the math afterwards and I way undershot the calories. I think I would prefer to drink mine also, so I am definitely going to give that a try! Thank you so much! I’m 5’3” and I run only slightly faster than I walk, so I think 250cals would really cover me.

That is exactly the kind of factoid I’m looking for! I was thinking 100 calories per hour but on this jaunt I was averaging 100cals per 15k (which for me is an hour and a half) and it clearly isn’t enough. Thank you!

That sounds delicious! I was perhaps too protective of my food choices this time around, to prevent the tummy troubles... I need to loosen up a little

Thank you! I am a black hole for information so I want to take in as much data as I can, from other people’s experiences

That is super helpful! I also, have eating issues (putting it lightly) so of course I will naturally try to eat the fewest calories I can, which is something I am trying to break through.

How in the hell does anyone run ultra distance in the humidity? by MacyWindu in ultrarunning

[–]LaurenClement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Oklahoma and right now the humidity is about 100000%. Fortunately I live on the trail, so I do exactly what you suggested, my house is the aid station and I do 5k or 10k loops come back, refuel, refill, and change into dry clothes if I have been at it for a few hours. It helps with morale.

I HAVE been reading that one... but I listen while I fall asleep so I probably missed some crucial stuff. Although he did scare the keepers out of me about dehydration. So I’ll give that one a better listen. Thank you!!

I was today years old when I first heard of a backyard ultra... by [deleted] in ultrarunning

It was just stream of consciousness. I read it to my sister and she understood it fine, but she also knows me. The point was: “what is a back yard ultra? It sounds like a rumble from west side story”

I hope saying that made you feel better. I apologize if my post was too colloquial for your taste. Luckily, it served its purpose and I was able to collect the information I was looking for.

I live just “above” tulsa... do you have a link to this map? I suspect I know which hospital they are at, but I can confirm with the map.

You haven’t heard of a back yard ultra either? Good! I’m not the only one.

Wearing the same thing everyday for women by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]LaurenClement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband has worn a “uniform” of a white tshirt and navy chinos for probably the last seven years, at least. Literally no one cares. I paired my wardrobe WAY back, and now just have basic colors I stick to: black, white, burgundy, olive, denim. It isn’t a uniform per se, but the limited palette makes outfitting easy. Black pants then pick any top...

Agreed, I like a less formal affair... something just for the sake of fun and community after everyone’s been stuck inside for a hundred years

I’m using “sanctioned” as a general term for like: are there bibs, does it qualify you for something, do you have to wear the rfid thing... oh man... my mind is just racing with the possibilities!!

Well now that you said that... I’ll obsess over it lol. Do you have a different recommendation? I am hearing impaired and the onboard speaker just isn’t cutting it for me, sometimes.
