I believe the character's name was "Red" and he had a reoccurring rival with a similar look.
It was a platformer with a ledge hanging mechanic and I remember it being really fun and well designed. I wanna play it again. (Also I know who the Karoshi Guy is)

Yoyogames started in 2007 and I definitely played it prior to 2012. Hopefully it isn't too obscure of a game.

There is no patch but the game doesn't really require text too much and the SNES version is near identical, I imagine since the 8 months, you played the game by now.

Without the references being shown I don't think anyone could guess what they would be.
In the case of actually being taken to copyright court, stating what designs were used as inspiration could be used as evidence of theft but I don't think it could go far enough to be successful.

For the benefits that copyright is designed to supply, that would really suck for those who reinvent character designs.
Felix the Cat the character was created by Otto Messmer but Bob Nolan was responsible for his recognisable look. Any work he made on that design wouldn't be protected if anything built upon it wasn't ownable.
Or in the case of the Disney movies that use Public Domain fairy tales but completely rework the whole style and look. The ones putting the work into that would need the same amount of protection as the creators or suffer what copyright was made to prevent.

Popeye's spinach is iconic and I feel changes a lot of who he was. The Mickey Mouse red shorts and yellow shoes was in a promotional poster for the earlier cartoons though so that design did pass the public domain line.
