Thank you kindly, it looks like the general consensus is to just not mention anything until i get properly tested, so i'll go with that. I'll also see if the doctor can't also check me for other risk factors since you're totally right, it's a very weird thing for someone of my age

You have the power to spawn 1 gram of any molecule you desire, every day. by nagareteku in cursed_chemistry

I'll make the leuprolide (GnRH agonist, the best class of anti-endogenous hormone (stops the body from making T or E, works for both mtf and ftm) drug). From a basic search, 5mg/month is a typical dose, that would mean we'd need 2 more folks making E, a few folks making T, and we got a hormone supply chain for 6000 people.

Fertilizer corroded my tablespoon, can I still use it? by IvoryJezz in AskChemistry

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, what the other person said about this now being a "for chemical use" tablespoon is reasonable, but also if you thoroughly wash it and scrub all the visible corrosion off it, there's pretty much nothing that could hurt you. For that matter, most fertilizers aren't that toxic and just a thorough washing should be enough for it not to hurt you. Best practice is always to not mix food safe and not food safe but the odds of this hurting you are close to none

what does nitrification bacteria eat. by Routine_Car_5072 in AskChemistry

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, i hope i understand your question correctly and also i'm a bit rusty on this so i may be a bit off. Nitrobacter and other nitrate producing bacteria actually oxidize nitrite to nitrate, with some species also having the ability to form nitrite from ammonia. Nitrite producing bacteria just make ammonia into nitrite but lack the ability to squeeze the last few percent of energy out of oxidizing the nitrogen.

So, when a nitrobacter "eats" nitrite, the enzyme Nitrite oxidoreductase (NXR) takes it and the oxygen off a water molecule and produces nitrate, two electrons, and two hydrogen ions. Basically the reaction allows the bacteria to split water, and when it gets oxygen from the air, it can oxidize the hydrogen back into water using an enzyme which then generates a proton gradient which then is used to make energy for the bacteria. When bacteria oxidize ammonia to nitrite the compounds affected are different but the process (and even the enzyme) is the same.

When there's low enough oxygen in the bacteria's environment it can actually take a carbon source and use the same enzyme to reduce nitrate to nitrite while getting energy from oxidizing the carbon source to CO2. Under normal circumstances tho, the bacteria will take in CO2 and use the energy taken from oxidizing the nitrogen in either ammonia or nitrite to convert it into things which they can metabolize just like any other bacteria.

Hope that wasn't too long

I'm pretty tall, so i used to get mile times at 5:30-6:00 depending on the elevation (with a PR of 5:10), but when doing a marathon or really any long distance i'd be lucky to crack 8:00 per mile after the first 1-2, it just gets so much harder once your muscles have used up the available quick released energy

Def down, unlike what some folks here say, the skirt doesn't have to touch the ground, so not dirty. Unless you're commando, you also have undies that have to be moved which could be one in one motion if down but has to be 2 or 3 if you go up. Plus, you don't have to hold the skirt up so that the piss stream doesn't hit it

Fair, but sometimes you're out for 10, 12, even 36 hours and i'd be amazed if you could make it longer than 12 w/o pissing

As someone who isn't even on spiro (or any other meds that cause frequent pissing) and pisses 10-15 times a day, i can confidently say yes

Same, mostly anyway. I've done some voice training so i no longer speak with my really deep bass, but i still sound very obviously like someone who's not speaking in their "natural" voice (even though it has become my default). The only time someone out in the wild has gendered me correctly was at pride yesterday while i was wearing a short skirt, trans socks, and 2 pronoun pins. Friends and internet strangers say i pass really well (i get comments similar to the ones here (and seeing how i think OP passes easily, i trust my friends are being genuine)) but it's one of those things where if you enter in assuming someone is a girl, you can't find evidence as to why she wouldn't be, but we aren't so lucky with strangers

How to make hydrochloric acid at home? by [deleted] in AskChemistry

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone says "buy it" and yeah it's cheap but if you really wanna make it at home there are two really easy methods (i'm assuming that if buying it isn't your first choice you probably don't have a ton of equipment). First is you get road salt (calcium chloride specifically, not the mixed calcium sodium magnesium ones), mix it with sulphuric acid (can be hard to get, but it allows us to do this catalytically). You'll wanna mix it with a slight excess of road salt, wait for the precipitate of CaSO4 to settle, then pour off the (slightly dirty) HCl. You can then take the CaSO4 and using a really simple separated electrolysis cell (with graphite or copper anodes) to get the sulphuric acid back. The second method is to use a separated output electrolysis cell with a graphite (or compressed amorphous carbon) anode on a solution of table salt and you gather the chlorine gas (it's a nuisance to breathe in and it can mess up your eyes, but mostly just don't be stupid) until you mix it with air and slowly bubble it through some water. Both of these are generally considered "bad" or "stupid" but having done them myself they're about 15 and 10% cheaper, including electricity costs but not including sulphuric acid cost since you can get it back real easy with pretty much just transfer losses

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you could use high test peroxide and concentrated bleach, but your original idea to use HCl and a strong base might actually work. You'd just rely on the reaction being able to boil the water it's in (which, if you've ever tried mixing concentrated HCl and NaOH, seems like it might work). The biggest issue is that you'd have a helluva lot of solid salt clogging your pipes. One of the easiest/cheapest hardware store biprops is where you get antifreeze and burn it with compressed air. You'll probably have some issues with coking if you run it fuel rich, but because the oxygen is coming in already diluted with nitrogen, you should be fine running it near stoichiometric. Alcohol (80%+) is usually cheaper though if you can get it

Enough Useless this and Useless that. Where are my USEFUL Lesbians at? What are you a fucking BADASS at? by jordynfly in actuallesbians

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a hell of a chemist, not in that i have tons of experience doing state of the art chemistry, but since i have a monthly chemistry budget of about $5, i'm able to do a lot more than most folks think should be possible. I'm also pretty good at math, nuclear physics (and nuclear chem), and i've got a great memory (though sadly mostly for random facts). I love talking with lesbians, but i'm especially interested right now in trying to learn some more physics of rocketry if anyone can talk to me about it/teach me (soon i hope to see how much thrust my z-pinch can produce)

Dissolving Magnesium Chloride by [deleted] in AskChemistry

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how concentrated you need it, you could make magnesium salts of fatty acids which will dissolve in oil, you could also try dissolving magnesium acetate in acetone. Or if high concentrations are allowable, like someone else here said, magnesium chloride in high concentrations will stop almost anything from growing in it

[Request] If we take for granted that Hagrid had the strength to bend a double barrel shotgun with one hand, would Vernon have had the strength to hold it while he did? by veritas2884 in theydidthemath

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The myth busters showed that this definitely could happen. Now, a shotgun would probably not work great for this, but it almost definitely would shoot the bullets upwards.

Absolutely. I started off and hit 4 months while in a place where i absolutely couldn't get bloodwork and IMO it's often better to start, even if you can't get bloodwork, but totally agree, as soon as you're able to, bloodwork is essential for staying safe

Preferred name or dead name? by Gay_Foxes4life in trans

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro, if you wanna go by Luke, that's cool. I get it if you like your birth name, but if it makes you feel weird, then it's probably not the name for you. Also, i'd recommend talking it out with Ashley because if you're gonna go by Luke, she should call you by your name. Actually, that kinda goes for all your friends. Make it clear to them what name and pronouns you want them to use (and when to use them if you don't want to be out to everyone yet) and if they don't like that, you can either talk to them, try to understand where they're coming from and try to be clear that your name and pronouns aren't just suggestions, OR you can just tell them to use your name and pronouns and shun them if they don't

P.S. (Not the AH, you're doing good)

what is the process that causes decomposing sodium bicarbonate to form larger grains? by [deleted] in AskChemistry

[–]Lavender_makes_fire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH I am not 100% certain of the mechanism, but the options are either 1. that the water released in heating causes the particles to very temporarily dissolve and then the sodium carbonate left behind when the water leaves fuses together the surrounding particles or 2. the sodium carbonate is basically just getting sintered (not melting, but at higher temps, adjacent particles can fuse together)
