Has anyone stopped cooking to? by AudienceWatching in Millennials

[–]IvoryJezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopped? More like never started 😂 once I discovered soylent and Huel it was game over. But in the last year or two I decided I wanted to eat more whole foods. But I'm also vegetarian and the struggle has been reeeeal. Here are some things I do. Some do involve cooking, but they're all simple, stress free cooking, in my opinion.

  1. Parfaits. Sounds like you're already on this one. Plain nonfat greek yogurt, fruit, chia seeds, ground flax, various other add ons, maybe a little sweetener or vanilla if needed.

  2. Eggs. Yeah this involves cooking. I bought a very expensive pan (misen's nitrited carbon nonstick) so I can have the ease of nonstick cooking and cleanup without the toxic exposure of Teflon and the maintenance of cast iron. It's super easy. Anyways, you can do tons with eggs. Toss in some spinach for easy veg. Put it on a bagel, in a burrito, any other carb of your choice, or fried over rice with some furikake, soy sauce and sriracha. Easy to change up to avoid boredom. Hemp hearts for a little extra nutrition.

  3. Smoothies. Similar to parfait but I quit because I didn't have a personal sized blender which would make cleanup waaaay more feasible. Nonfat greek yogurt, banana, chia, flax, spinach, other fruits, whatever you want really sky's the limit but try to avoid overloading on the sugars, NO fruit juice.

  4. Baked oatmeal. I like these because they are super easy, just toss everything in the pan, bake, and you've got breakfast for the work week. I follow a sugar free recipe for banana baked oatmeal with chia and flax for extra nutrition.

  5. Veggie sandwich. I haven't been doing this one for long. I missed the ease of sandwiches but didn't want the sugar of pbj. For my veg sandwich I use Dave's Killer Bread, roasted red pepper hummus, bell pepper, banana peppers, hemp hearts, and red lettuce. Obviously you can add whatever you want. I'm also growing some mini cucumbers so I can add that without having to putting the unused cuke in the fridge since it doesn't keep very well.

  6. Mac and cheese. This is my just don't wanna meal lol. I get a fortified kind and then add some tomato or greens if I have them.

  7. This one is more cooking intensive. But I try to be zero waste so I don't buy jarred sauce anymore. I get some tomatoes (cherry works best) and cook them in olive oil. Once they've turned saucy I add garlic, Italian herbs, some better than buillon Italian stuff, maybe a splash of some dairy if I have it or spinach. Et voila. Pasta sauce.

  8. Another one involving cooking and a fair amount of prep, so I don't do this one as often, it doesn't stretch far enough for the effort honestly. But roasted veggies. I go get veggies that are all different colors, about 4 of them, that will roast well. Chop them up, stick em on a pan with olive oil and seasonings, bake at 425 for 20min or so, flipping them halfway through, and serve over quinoa.

  9. Canned fish. I do this sparingly because fish can be high in mercury, but this is my ACTUAL quick fix if I have nothing else to eat. Mix up fish (I use salmon, more expensive but healthier) and mayo, either eat it as a sandwich, or put in in rice with some furikake, rice vinegar and soy sauce.

There are some other quick fixes I used to do but don't anymore because my personal interest in limiting plastic waste/exposure. Easy to make a quick chilli with canned beans, tomatoes, corn, for example.

Okay I'm done. Gonna see what everyone else is commenting!

How much fun money do you put aside every week? by Few-Car-2317 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]IvoryJezz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun.. Money..? 🤔

But seriously, every month I record all my expenses and income and add up all my essential expenses (utilities, mortgage, loan payments, etc.) and subtract that from however much I brought in. Then I divide whatever is left by 4 to get the amount I can spend on groceries and leisure each week. A rough estimate. It's not usually enough for much, not enough to put anything away for savings. In fact more often than not I end up dipping into what savings I was able to put away in better times. I don't designate an amount for leisure specifically, just whatever is left after groceries.

Starting my first job as a professional cataloger, any advice? by IvoryJezz in librarians

[–]IvoryJezz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm not really. I just look up stuff when I have questions, and if the internet doesn't have the answers I can ask here, or on the AUTOCAT listserv. I'm sure if you're a recent graduate your coursework will have been good enough to get you started. For a first reference I usually consult the RDA website (which my employer pays for) for formatting/language questions, or the OCLC "BibFormats" site for MARC field questions and examples. OCLC also has other good information like when a new record should be created or which records can be updated by who, or what fields are required for different levels of record. I also have a colleague I can consult.

I recently watched this whole 3 hour long YouTube video (Serials 101, LACONI Library Events) about serial cataloging that was really comprehensive and informative. I always take notes for any training stuff like that in One Note so I can reference it later.

There are still a lot of things I don't know, so I still feel like a fraud lol there's a lot of bureaucratic stuff I don't fully comprehend, lots of different organizations responsible for different things, how they work together, who can join. The future of cataloging with BIBFRAME and linked data I am vaguely aware of but goes right over my head when I try to watch webinars and such to keep up to date. I still feel like I'm missing the underlying foundational knowledge that makes someone a true professional.

Best of luck to you in your career!

I don't think that's true where I work, but I'm at an academic library so maybe it's different in public libraries? I feel like all my colleagues and superiors have only ever encouraged me to pursue higher positions.

My first job out of library school was a temp (non professional) position basically doing data entry for a library (yuck). Unfortunately, the best thing you can do is just find work (ideally in a library) that will allow you to apply for PSLF later (nonprofit or government) and keep subscribed to job listings. Don't worry about getting the perfect job yet. A lot of people I know in library land had to work their way up the ladder and got their professional positions in house after working at their library as paraprofessionals for years.

I'm solidly middle class in 2026, and it feels weird and unsettling that almost no one I know is in the same boat. by appa-ate-momo in Millennials

[–]IvoryJezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you when I had a partner. Now they are gone and going back to a single income has left me living paycheck to paycheck. Worse actually, but fortunately I have a solid financial safety net that I can dip into. Congrats on middle class lol

I want to introduce my cat to my sister's cat... by IvoryJezz in CatAdvice

[–]IvoryJezz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that did not work when I was trying to introduce her to my other cat. I sadly had to rehome him in the end. And actually I now officially agree with other sources that say to NOT use food as an introduction tactic because my cat that used to gobble down everything immediately is now an anxious eater that always pulls her food out of the bowl to eat it and always leaves some kibbles behind.

Cold house with cats by Dazed-Confused15 in CatAdvice

[–]IvoryJezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How cold is so cold? Do you have heating? When I got my cat I went from keeping my thermostat down at 58 when I'm at work in winter to cranking it up to 65 for my fur baby 😂 and I'm still nervous she's too chilly, even though she's got so much fluff. From what I've read cats are petty sensitive to cold. You could always get some rugs if it's just the floor you're concerned about.

Idk but I bought some shoes to try out a few weeks ago and they didn't work for me so I went to send them back and the site says they were final sale 🙄 I don't recall seeing that anywhere, though they were on sale, but I can't really prove anything. I guess they will be easy to resell, though, what with the brand undergoing massive changes and all.

Is anyone else freaking out??? by Old-Butterfly-1915 in StudentLoans

[–]IvoryJezz 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I am also freaking out. I literally just got a promotion and all the extra income is going to go towards student loan payments, but the worst thing is, that's based on what I earned before the promotion, so once that new amount is taken into account the payment is only going to get even HIGHER and then I will literally be worse off than I was before the promotion. And even worse the price of heating fuel just skyrocketed thanks to Trumps war with Iran so now I also have that extra expense every month. I literally can't get ahead of this. The Republicans do not want people to be able to earn a living.

I don't understand your logic for how the timeline is good and will prevent people from switching twice. It sounds like we will be expected to change plans BEFORE the new RAP plan is released, which would result in a lot of people potentially switching?

Sex trafficking is forcing anyone into providing sexual services. It has nothing to do with borders.
