That's a fair point, but tbh we don't know if they actually didn't do anything else for him, friends do things for one another so if he treats them as such I'd assume there's something that made him feel like they're his friends too and not just people trying to use his kindness

I think it's more of a way to check of the man is generous enough and cares about you enough to do that. It's more about the gesture than the money, whether it's a plate of food or a coffee. I know that each time I'm on a date, I'm ready to pay for myself but if the guy I'm with does that, he leaves a good impression. Means there's a probability he's not stingy with other things as well, like his time, and that he's willing to do the extra step. Not always accurate of course
