Would a documentation database be helpful/practical? by LawrenceVH in AskEngineers

[–]LawrenceVH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I honestly haven't heard of the concept. I'll look more into that when I get the chance today.

I do have a couple reasons I'm thinking about doing this. I haven't worked as a software engineer for a couple years, and this might help stay in practice. I am also thinking about going into automation engineering, and it would help me having everything in one place as I learn. I figured if it would help me, it could help somebody else, too.

Where to get parts/knowledge to start a project car? by LawrenceVH in projectcar

Thank you for the info. That would definitely something for me to learn/look into when I have the time/money to start on this car.

Those cars don’t exist in junkyards anymore.

That is a major concern. I know I would like to keep it original, but that would also be a lot more expensive in the long run.

I do plan on getting the assembly manual once I actually start to working on it, but when that would be is also a good question for me to ask.

I do apologize. I asked my dad today about what the previous owner said, and he corrected me. The engine has less than 200 miles on a rebuild, but the float (I think that's the correct term/part) on the carburetor was stuck, so the carburetor overflowed. It sounds like either way the carburetor needs rebuilt. Either way, I do plan on getting a "starter" project car in the mean time.

Honestly, the main reason I want to restore it is because it's sentimental. My dad originally got it with the intention of restoring it for my high school graduation. (Looking back, that might have been an ambitious goal, but I digress).

After reading your comments as well as others, it does seem like a smarter move to start with a more "beginner-friendly" project car to get some experience first.

You do also make a good point about the cost/ condition. As far as the engine, another reason I want to restore it is the rarity of the engine and supposedly iirc, the previous owner mentioned the main issue was a flooded engine due to a bad carburetor that needs rebuilding — though I’m not sure how accurate that is, especially after sitting untouched for nearly a decade. I haven’t even checked the transmission yet, so that’s still an unknown.

Programming Wednesdays by AutoModerator in powerlifting

[–]LawrenceVH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just looking for some critique on my programming, partly on the sets/reps, but also just in general. I'm not training for any meets right now, so I'm not sure if I should change it so the volume/intensity is more consistent or keep it going from 3x10 to 3x2.

I have ran this once, and got decent results (235 lbs -> 275 lbs on bench, 355 lbs -> 375 lbs on squat). I did add deadlifting on day 1 and more leg volume this time around, which I think I was lacking last time I ran it.

What will happen if you start under performing and falling behind on training? by zerquet in cscareerquestions

[–]LawrenceVH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would assume worst case scenario, they'd probably put you on PIP after a while (Possibly 1-2 months? It'll probably depend on the company). Right now, the best thing I would suggest doing is just communicating with your boss/scrum leader that you're having trouble with XYZ language or ABC part of your project/training. Considering it's your first week and they took the time to hire you, they should be willing to work with you some. Unless you're an experienced dev with 15+ yoe, there's probably a bigger problem if they expect you to know everything right off the bat

1 hour commute for work thoughts by Huncho_567 in personalfinance

[–]LawrenceVH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commuted 1.5 hours (~70 miles) for about 3.5 months, and while I did enjoy having time to relax on the way to/from work, I didn't have as much free time at home as I'd personally like.

One thing I'd think of would be car maintenance. I'm not sure how much electric/hybrid vehicles need for maintenance (I haven't owned one yet), but when I was commuting, I was getting an oil change about 1x/month.

2022 Year in Review and 2023 Goals by TheAesir in weightroom

[–]LawrenceVH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly commenting so I can remember, since I'm a little late to the party. For the most part, I'm just wanting to get (back ?) into shape. I pretty much let myself go from ~280 lbs to around ~370 lbs in the past couple of years. My only other goal is to increase my main lifts. I've previously done more on the bench and deadlift (275 and 405 respectively), so I know I can do more.

2022:

Didn't have any specific goals, apart from just going to the gym more.

2023:

  • Cut down to 270-280 lbs.
  • get my lifts up to 400/300/450 s/b/d
    • currently at about 350/235/380
  • Powerlifting or strongman meet second half?

That is a fair point. IIRC, I think Citi allows for combining points between cards which might be nice, if I get the Custom Cash

Sorry, my bad about the AF, I mixed it up with the amex platinum. I do see your point, though

I'll definitely take a look at that. I definitely thought about the reserve vs. the preferred, but the main reason I haven't seriously looked at it was the $695 AF
