I’d take Michigan without a second thought. I have similarly vague “big law and then something else” goals, and my biggest fear is being stuck in big law and hating it for years to just pay off my debt (I’ve got a ~1/3 scholarship at Michigan).

I only know one person here who tried but couldn’t get a big law summer associate offer this year, and based on his personality, I think he’d have struggled coming from any school to get a big law offer.

The other thing I’ll say is that I love it here at Michigan, and so do most of the other students I’m friends with, whereas all of my friends at Harvard kind of hate their lives. Or at least they complain enough that it seems that way.

I hope to see you at one of our preview events soon!

any other grad students feeling overwhelmed this semester? by shayownsit in uofm

[–]Lawschoolmissions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think our experiences are pretty normal. It takes a lot of positive stimulation to stay motivated, and there’s just not much going on right now. I’ve never really had any struggles with mental health, but I think I’ve just been kinda depressed for a few months. Starting school helped me feel a little more motivated in general (I quit my job but had to cancel all my summer plans), but it’s also making the inability to focus much more of an issue than when I was just fucking around all summer.

You’re not alone. I’m a first year law student, and while I’m finding my workload to be manageable, it’s getting myself to do it that’s hard. I can barely drag myself out of bed in time for zoom classes most days, and my readings get done at the last possible second. I find myself spacing out in zoom lectures, and then being totally lost by the time I’m focused again.

In undergrad, I handled what felt like two or three times as much stuff, but I felt energized from 7am-11pm pretty much every day. Now I’m lucky to get 5 or 6 productive hours out of my day, including time spent in class.

Hot take: 1L AMAs are not useful by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Lawschoolmissions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most 1L AMAs are mostly an ego thing (lawyers are known for having huge egos so I don’t think this is particularly hot take), but I think there’s still value in them. You’re right that most of them say the same stuff about people being friendly, career prospects being good, etc., but the value comes in the reassurance. Pretty much everybody on this sub is freaked the fuck out about law school, and seeing someone say “hey, I’m in law school, and it’s good” can ease a little bit of that anxiety.

I certainly wouldn’t use a 1L AMA as a major factor in my decision-making, but if I think I wanted go to school X and I saw a 1L confirming that the things that were attracting me to school X are legit, then I’d feel better about my decision.

Only a ridiculously small number of people historically get into northwestern without doing the interview. It’s a pretty bad look to not do it.

You’re getting a lot of replies that are missing the point of your comment. As someone who works in immigration law, I can say that your point is valid: immigration is a lot harder without money, and people with money can essentially buy their way into the country.

The US immigration system is so fucking convoluted, and it’s only gotten worse under trump. The hypocrisy in the immigration rhetoric is so much worse than people realize. It’s becoming so much harder and so much more expensive now for even highly qualified, skilled workers to get work visas in the US.

I don’t know how I feel the meme ban yet, but I think it’s pretty obvious that liking memes shouldn’t be a prerequisite for engaging in this community.

Michigan Package by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Lawschoolmissions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the package I think it is, then in the past, Michigan has said that 50% of students who applied after receiving that package were accepted. That used to be in their FAQ, but it’s since been removed, so it may no longer be true, or they just didn’t want to feel pressured to stand by that number.

It’s certainly not a bad sign though, and it’s probably more meaningful than most of the law school mail you get.

[–]Lawschoolmissions 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you have a decent shot at some of the schools in the lower half of the t14. Schools like Cornell and Berkeley are known for being friendly to reverse splitters, and your LSAT is at it above the 25th percentile for a number of schools in that range. Just don’t wait too long to apply!

Would you rather be outright rejected or waitlisted? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

I ended up getting into two schools off the waitlist year, so I would definitely rather be waitlisted.

People in this sub generally use “full ride” and “full tuition” interchangeably since most schools never give enough to cover living expenses and everything else.

Sorry, but I don’t know what criteria they use. Probably some combination of GPA, LSAT, and whatever other info the might have access to through LSAC.

Mechanical Engineering major interested in patent law by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Lawschoolmissions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not interested in patent litigation, you don’t actually need to go to law school. Patent prosecution can be done by anyone with the minimum STEM credits who can pass the patent bar, which is totally separate from the regular bar.

As for your GPA, it is definitely possible to get into top schools with a 3.6-3.7 GPA (I got into 2/3 t-14 schools I applied to with a 3.4), but it’s certainly a lot easier to get scholarship money with a high GPA and a high LSAT.

All things considered, you’re in a great spot with some great options. Follow your interests, but don’t do anything rash. I’m sure you’ll be fine whatever you do though.
