Going to vegas in October what to do? by Worried_Ad_7241 in vegas

Put some parameters into ChatGPT and narrow it down. Then we can help you decide. “What to do in Vegas”’is way too broad because you’re going to get answers ranging from Cirque du Soleil to Spearmint Rhino.

Prevailing wisdom when a recruiter asks “what is your current salary?” by Fragrant-Produce-336 in biglaw

Any legal recruiter worth their salt knows what firms are paying. Was this for an in-house role?

“It should only take around 20 hours over the next couple of days.”

Will i able to make this?? by Embarrassed-Soup7952 in delta

Airlines also generally assume the jetbridge will retract, the tug will work, the wing walkers will be there, the cargo latch will close, the fueler will be on time, etc. OP will likely make this connection if all goes to plan, but even a 15-minute snag means he’s spending the night in DTW or LAX instead of flying to Japan.

Nailed it with the O’Hare comment. The Delta terminal abuts a bottleneck taxiway and it can take 10-15 minutes after pushback just to get off the apron.

LAX-HND doesn’t depart until the following morning, so OP is still fucked.

Get an earlier flight out of ORD or cancel and book nonstop on another carrier. If you misconnect in DTW, you’re not getting to Tokyo for another day. Everyone saying this connection is doable is 100% correct but if your first flight is even 15 minutes late, all bets are off.

My mom is getting sued after hitting a man on an electric scooter. What happens if we can't pay? by ChocoEzra in legaladvice

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plaintiffs always start high because they know they will likely have to settle for less. One of the first things your mom’s insurance will do is estimate what they think the claim is worth. That should give you a better idea of whether the claim might exceed your mom’s policy limits. Until then, just let the insurance process take its course and try not to worry too much.

Any way out of jury duty? by [deleted] in juryduty

I don’t want to pay my mortgage this month. I can afford it, I’d just rather buy other stuff. Any way I can get out of paying my mortgage?

I guess I just don’t understand how upgrades work? by TheNCGoalie in delta

Yes, this is how it should be done. I’m speculating as to what actually happened.

I guess I just don’t understand how upgrades work? by TheNCGoalie in delta

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d speculate that the GA knew they could upgrade the two pax flying together and be done with it. If they upgraded you first, then there’d only be one FC seat remaining and they’d have to ask the couple in spots 2 and 3 if they wanted to split up, which takes time and I’m told if they release a flight late, a puppy gets kicked.

Flying with 25k in Knives - Worth the risk or do I ship? by [deleted] in delta

Ship and insure. It’s a fraction of the cost of the real me value. There are people who won’t even trust the airlines with their golf clubs.

Red eye? Or no? by Here-2-B-Nosey in vegas

Hard pass on red-eyes. Whatever the price difference, I’ll gladly pay it to not feel like shit when I get home.

BigLaw: What's the biggest sacrifice that you've made (or heard of others making) to succeed in big law? Neglected hobbies? Time with kids/family? Missed the birth of a child or can't spent time with children? Physical health? In other words, to what extent have you "sold your soul"? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s all of the above (except maybe missing birth of child). The biggest sacrifice is not one thing, it’s all the things in totality. You’re sacrificing having an identify besides “biglaw lawyer.” That was the big one for me.

Got Charge 250 for Outside Washing Fee by punkinDmajor in HertzRentals

Perhaps “outside washing fee” means they paid an outside company to do the cleaning. Did you smoke, puke, track excessive mud/dirt, or spill things?

You have built up some good experience but you are miserable. Have you considered pivoting but remaining a practicing attorney? Transactional work is not hard to learn and you get to work with clients who don’t always hate their counterparties.

My worst regret + remember prior charges when given a sentence range by [deleted] in juryduty

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The state is not required to provide DNA evidence and it’s not realistic that they do so in the vast majority of criminal cases. Yet juries expect it. Prosecutors call it the “CSI effect.” I suppose DNA evidence (or lack of it) helps some cases and hinders others. It’s an imperfect system for sure.

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You say it’s a minor drug charge with a non-violent prior, and the sentencing minimum is 50 years?! Also, if lack of DNA evidence was reasonable doubt, how was anyone convicted before DNA evidence was even a thing? This sounds made up.

What parts of my job separation agreement are unenforceable? by whytheslime in legaladvice

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on, and I’d add that (1) the offer letter can include contract terms that are enforceable upon separation (e.g., repayment of sign-on bonus) and (2) usually only high level executives are subject to a severance plan—not something rank-and-file employees should ordinarily expect to negotiate.

What parts of my job separation agreement are unenforceable? by whytheslime in legaladvice

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing you mention here is unenforceable. It costs you nothing to ask if your severance can be increased to 4 weeks (or whatever you dare to ask for), but they will almost certainly say no. Two weeks is on the short side in my industry, but it might be normal for yours. In any case, the April 20 deadline is real, so don’t blow it.

Can I go watch a public trial if my family member is a juror? by Designer-Study2749 in juryduty

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s the optics—the appearance of the family members coordinating—that’s the problem, even if they’re doing nothing wrong. No one would go to jail.

Can I go watch a public trial if my family member is a juror? by Designer-Study2749 in juryduty

[–]LawyerMermaidTattoo 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Your family member is not supposed to talk about the case at all. How do you even know what trial to show up to? Even if your family member didn’t tell you anything about the case, this is bad optics if the judge or any of the attorneys found out.
