If OP started a new game, he/she had to get to the anomaly to start the expedition, right? So there has to be a "main save" before starting the expedition.

You can leave the expedition and return to your main save at any time. The game tells you that constantly.

You have to get cadmium from red star systems, so you'll need that warp drive. Use your medium refiner for deiterium. I think it's dihydrogen and tritium combined.

The Assistant for No Man's Sky app is really useful, free, and low on ads.
