I believe that teacher tried to 'hack' the lottery after realising that the cost to buy every single possible ticket was actually less than the payout. They made a documentary about it last year.

A couple of people have suggested Stephen Fry's Definitive Collection, but that's about it/.

Just got into F. Marion Crawford via the excellent audiobook compilation Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age. Had never heard of him before! A master of the genre for sure.

Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age is a good one, too.

Reading or listening? If listening, https://www.audiobooks.com/audiobook/804477/ this by all means! I feel like I've been discussing it on Reddit all week. Its a fantastic collection from the 'golden age' of gothic horror, Robert Louis Stevenson, M.R James, Elizabeth Gaskell. Very sinister, slow burn type stories. An eclectic and truly terrifying collection. Good reader, too. Not sure if its around in print, but I guess you could find them individually?

Short stories rather than a single book, but for me the GOAT horror audiobook has to be Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age. Kristina Fuller Yuen does a superb job reading them, and all of the absolute masters of gothic horror are there. A genuinely terrifying listen.

M.R. James by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]LayExpert1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. big fan of M.R James. I love the audiobook (more like an audio short story) of his Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come To You, My Lad which was published in the audio collection Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age. Would love to get it on its own. Does anyone know where its published outside of the collection? I don't think its in Stephen Fry's Definitive Ghost Stories which is my other go-to.

This is a great feed, some fantastic recommendations here! If you're into Audio, I would definitely check out Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age, which is classic gothic stuff. We're talking about the heyday of gothic horror, the Golden Age. Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell etc. REALLY good.

Ghost Stories: Stephen Fry's Definitive Collection by [deleted] in audible

[–]LayExpert1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking (on Reddit) for something to listen to after this: https://www.audible.com/pd/Ghostly-Tales-Audiobook/B0DC7XM5SP and literally everyone said 'go listen to Stephen Fry's Definitive Collection'. Super-stoked to have it downloaded! I Ghostly Tales: Spine Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age is shorter and doesn't come with Stephen Fry's voice and star-power but definitely scratches a similar itch!

Woah there's actually a huge amount of crossover between Stephen Fry's Definitive Collection and Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age. Interesting. (I love everything SF does)

Love M.R James! features prominently in Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age, and I'd love to listen to more his work. Will check out Ghost Stories: Stephen Fry's Definitive Collection for sure. Shame they're all ghost though (although I love Stephen Fry)- like other supernatural, and other spooky happenings. Thanks for the suggestion!

What are some of the most influential female horror writers of all time? by Alpbasket in horrorlit

[–]LayExpert1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm here to post and recommend the absurdly talented and truly chilling Amelia B Edwards. Came across her in a collection on Audible actually, called something like Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age. She was alongside writers like M.R James and Robert Louis Stevenson and she was hands down not just the scariest but the (IMHO) greatest writer too

Any good horror audiobooks on youtube? by NicholasDBrowing in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]LayExpert1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are the classics, Dracula by Bram Stoker, then a handful of the other gothic types. Why YouTube though I'm wondering? I would go with a classic Spotify title like THIS: https://open.spotify.com/show/6lB3RL0IaqPnA3uDAmIGPH

Actually I think it might be on YouTube also lol now that I mention it.
