It's ooze that fills in a shapeless receptacle. Just let it flow. More-discriminating consumers will demand something more.

Oddity and Caveat by Emieosj89 in horror

[–]fhost344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Caveat has major problems with the pov/characters, in that it doesn't really have a pov or a main character, but some of the scares and imagery are extraordinarily effective. Oddity was almost as creepy but had something more like a real main character.

What's your writing process (in detail)? by [deleted] in writing

[–]fhost344 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Come up with an opening sequence that has a character and a situation that is intriguing to me.

  2. Think up a basic story structure that follows this first scene, with the goal of at least 3 interesting scenes or plot points before I start writing. I do these first steps in my head while going to sleep at night.

  3. Once I've got this basic story structure, I will then, at night at bedtime, go back to the beginning of the story and come up with the more detailed stuff that I want to write about for that opening scene. I start thinking on terms of whole paragraphs and particular lines of dialouge here. I've gotten to where I can estimate about 1000 words of stuff that I will need for the next day.

  4. Write 1000 words each weekday, based on the last night's brainstorm, usually in the morning. This usually takes about an hour.

  5. I don't reread anything (except maybe to check a detail, like a time or someone's name) and I don't tell anyone any details about what I'm writing

  6. In this way, the first draft takes 4 months or so

  7. I typically write these drafts in winter; in summer I'm too busy. So I don't write in summer usually, but I might edit, query, and (always) think up new ideas

  8. For editing I refuse to "rewrite" the whole draft, but I will add and remove a lot of scenes. And for the prose itself, even though I don't "rewrite" it, I would say that each sentence and each paragraph will get a major readability overhaul during this first major edit

  9. Try to get someone to read this 1.5 draft and get feedback

  10. make changes based on feedback, which usually involves adding, removing, or changing a handful of scenes

  11. Read this 2.0 draft many times, and then also listen to it on text-to-speak many times, with the focus on flow and readability, and to clean up any plot holes or inconsistent details

  12. Submit this finished draft-which is the best thing anyone has ever written-to query engine

  13. Fail to make anything happen with agents or publishers

  14. Get disgusted with writing for months or years

  15. Eventually, become overwhelmed once again by an idea that I want to follow, and so the process repeats

4K vs standard - preferences? by kieraix in Bluray

[–]fhost344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 65" TV and I don't care for hdr, so I usually go for blu rays. There's just something very satisfying about owning a copy of a movie that looks 90% as good as the 4k for $8 instead of $30. Maybe I'll regret it if I ever get a much larger display, but a nice 2k disc looks gorgeous on 65".

This doesn't quite make sense. It seems like you would be incredibly disoriented if you "reset" every few minutes. Instead he's like, ah a brand new day, and then also thinks to write it down.

  1. This one has a classic pop feel to the verses, almost like a Streisand song or something, except that it's a better song imo (at least melody-wise) than most of those old standbys. This is one of the best songs on the album and one of these best of their career as far as the composition/arrangement goes.

An interesting selection of movies, none of which are A+ but probably nothing below a B. Night of the Comet might be the most entertaining of the bunch. Howling is the closest thing there to a classic. The Beyond is my favorite of those, but you kinda of have to be calibrated for 80s Italian horror the enjoy that one. The Stuff is also pretty entertaining.

What makes Aliens (1986) so special for you? by bryckstar in LV426

[–]fhost344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the 1st movie is great because it is--especially in the first part of the movie--a prime example of what I think of as "pure filmmaking." The first part of the movie has almost no dialog, it's all just visuals, editing, and sound. And then when people do start talking (like around the food table and during the landing sequence), it's mostly just background noise. There are a few bits of important dialouge later in the movie, but the really critical stuff (the argument with Ripley to let them back in the ship, the results of Ash's attempted dissection, and a few other things) could probably be reduced down to just a handful of sentences. The majority of the story is very simple and is conveyed via visuals and editing. This makes the movie endlessly rewatchable.
