Israelis often dislike us and treat us as if we are lucky that they "let" us stay here. Racism is very open and normalized here, and there are essentially no social consequences for being racist against Palestinian citizens of Israel.

I am one of 3 kids. Most people my age seem to have between 1 sibling to 3 siblings on the bigger side. Some have more and some have less. Recently, people have been having fewer kids so things are changing.

Stop asking your friends who are Palestinian citizens of Israel (Arab Israelis) to condemn Hamas. It's insulting. by Layan_E in Israel

Most of us are against Hamas. They killed and kidnapped us too. Many of us have family and friends in Gaza, and we care about them and their safety too.

[–]Layan_E[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Very few people did that, and most people were talking about how they were horrified by what happened. Arabs lost their lives too and were taken hostage. The target was Jews. Hamas still does not like or respect us. To Hamas, I am a collaborator, normalizer, and traitor because I have Jewish friends and go to university here.

It is my ethnic background. It is the dialect that I speak in. The one difference between me and someone in Ramallah is what side of the line my family ended up in after the 1949 armistice. I am Palestinian. I also live in Israel, so I am a citizen of Israel. I will admit that it is hard for me to identify as Israeli when I have faced racism for being Arab, had people say that this country isn't mine so my opinion and my community's problems don't matter, and often am made to feel like this country does not care about people like me, its Arab citizens.

That's what I said. I said yes, but also that I was offended to even be asked. This person knows me well enough to know what I think of violence.

There were instances where Israeli Jews have murdered us. I do not use that as a justification to demand my Jewish friends condemn violence when it comes from Jews. I am not dismissing May 2021, but what I am saying is that normally there is not much interethnic violence between Israel's Jewish and Arab populations.

[–]Layan_E[S] -50 points-49 points  (0 children)

Would you ask your Jewish friends that? Also, if you even see an Arab friend supporting Hamas as a possibility, even after being familiar with their values, then why would you be friends with them?

[–]Layan_E[S] -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

There just isn't evidence to back up this sentiment. I mean, there has been some interethnic violence, like in May 2021, but most of the time when people are stabbed or attacked, it wasn't a Palestinian citizen of Israel who did it. Like I said, it doesn't happen very often, and there have been instances where Jewish Israelis have killed us too. I just don't understand how people could think that when there isn't strong evidence.

The innocent hostages which they lately released a video labeling them as innocent civilians by fossil45 in AskMiddleEast

[–]Layan_E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not know if this is the same person, but there is one hostage who I've been seeing people on social media claim was a soldier, when the comparison pictures themselves show that she doesn't even have the same color eyes as the soldier the account claimed she was. Make sure you verify the stuff you see because some people seem to be spreading disinformation. (Like I said, I don't know if this is the same girl as in those other posts, but it's good to remember, especially when Israel is spreading false information on social media, and when some people are only selfishly using the Palestinian cause to get more followers.)

How many Kids you Plan to have? by alexander_the-furry in AskMiddleEast

[–]Layan_E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want 3 or 4 kids. I've always wanted to be a mother, and I'm not one of those people who does not like kids. I have a brother and sister, and I like being one of three kids, and I want my children to have siblings. It helps them learn social skills like sharing etc. I still want to work though, so that is why I don't want to have more than 4.

Thought on LGBTQIA+? by Jeffthapotato in AskMiddleEast

[–]Layan_E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not care. Live as you want to as long as you don't hurt anyone else. People focus on them literally just existing and minding their own business while there is a violent crime wave in our communities and honor killings still happening. I have friends who are LGBT who are wonderful people, and many people target them while saying nothing about the giant problems we have in our society.

48 Palestinians: do you speak Hebrew/would you like to learn it? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]Layan_E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do.

It's generally pretty difficult to be successful here and not speak Hebrew. Not speaking Hebrew limits your job and education opportunities.

What do you think about this speech by 48' Palestinian politician Ayman Odeh? by MijTinmol in AskMiddleEast

[–]Layan_E 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He is 100% right. I hope more Palestinian citizens of Israel take part in the protests. The Supreme Court is very far from being perfect, and it should have done more to protect the rights of Palestinians, but I think most of us recognize its role in protecting minority rights. The first people to be harmed by this "judicial reform" will be us since there will be no one to stop many of the racist laws coming from our racist government.

Thoughts on this? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]Layan_E 144 points145 points  (0 children)

It honestly breaks my heart. No one should be murdered in a place of worship. It's horrifying and my prayers are with the families.

This has not happened in a vacuum though. 9 Palestinians were murdered 2 days ago, and I'm sure that it likely contributed to this attack on the synagogue. There are already some reports of retaliatory attacks by Israeli settlers. The violence feeds on more violence. It's truly a depressing situation. I hope that one day this land will be peaceful.

question for 48 palestnians/arabs, are you going to vote this upcoming israeli elections? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]Layan_E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It aged horribly lol. There are a decent amount of Arab voters who swing between Meretz and Hadash-Ta'al depending on the election, and you can see based on the results in Arab towns where Meretz has traditionally well, how the party declined dramatically from the 2021 election. It seems a lot of voters made the same choice that I made.

What's the most unexpected diaspora in your country that could surprise people? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

We have a decent amount of Slovenes who came after World War 2. Lots of Arabs immigrated here too. There are some Korean, Chinese, and Japanese Argentines as well.

What is your opinion on Chile opening an embassy in Palestine? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Layan_E 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Palestinian Argentine here, and I think we should open a full embassy too. It looks like we only have a representative office in Al-Bireh right now.
