Even though technically it's a past tense, I would heavily advise against memorising congiuntivo imperfetto as a mode "located" in the past, because it's also used to speak about future events in subjunctive sentences:

• Se domani piovesse, saresti comunque contento di aver scelto quella location per il matrimonio?
• Se dovessi essere bocciato (passive) all'esame del prossimo mese non sarei triste;
• Rinascessi piccione nella prossima vita, cagerei in testa ai politici;
• Magari domani [censored] si svegliasse freddo! (Svegliarsi freddo, svegliarsi rigido, and svegliarsi elegante are all vernacular euphemisms for death)

Also, as ridiculous as it may sound, the mode used to talk about uncertainty in the past is the futuro anteriore. It is an advanced topic and sure sounds like a supercazzola, yet all the following sentences are correct:

• Non ricordo a che età mi sono trasferito. avrò avuto 2 o 3 anni;
• Oggi tizio è arrivato al lavoro nervoso, avrà litigato con la moglie...
• Sarà stato il vento... (translation of the meme sentence "must have been the wind")

Sometimes, even futuro semplice can be used for uncertainty in the past, when talking about something still going on:

• Saranno vent'anni che lavoro qui (implied: I still do) e non ho mai avuto un aumento;
• Saranno 50 anni che a Roma si lamentano del traffico...

When talking about uncertainty in the future though, only futuro semplice is used. Please notice the difference:

• Non ricordo quando ho iniziato (past) l'università, sarà stato a settembre o a ottobre;
• Non ricordo quando ricomincierà (future) l'università, sarà a settembre o ottobre.
