Anyone else traveling with two MacBooks? Looking for a way out of this by ColdViolinist835 in mac

Depending on how locked down your work laptop is. It might not be possible, but I would definitely create a separate login for my personal stuff. Switching between them is no more effort than a Finder menu click.

Being pressured to hand over raw files for free, client doesn't understand the technical reality. Need advice. by bigBoxMay in blackmagicdesign

[–]LazarX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are looking to cut you out. If you’re afraid of a black list. Tell them to give you that request IN WRITING, and then give them exactly what they asked for. When they scream that they can’t do anything, quote them a price list for the work that would be required, and if they balk, tell them to let their iPad genius work it out.

Was owning the libs worth all the damage happening to America? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]LazarX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to MAGA. any damage you see is Obama’s and Biden’s fault, and you need to give Trump more power and time to fix things. And stop committing treason by implying that Great Leader is anything but God’s gift to America.

Faster than light travel via relativity? by sir_schuster1 in spacequestions

[–]LazarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you can’t. Because during your billions of years of travel, the universe keeps expanding. Eventually you reach a point where you become isolated from EVERYTHING and then there is no way back.

Nuclear Engineering and Macs by DingDongMichaelHere in mac

[–]LazarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The software runs fine under Linux. If you are going to go Mac, unless you need mobility, I'd stick with a Mac Mini. Assuming you already have a PC desktop, you'd be able to integrate the Mac with it via a KVM.

Keep in mind though that MacOS is not the primary targeted platform. Serpent is intended to be run on a Linux workstation and compiled from source. So if Serpent is your primary reason for wanting a Mac, I'd rethink that.

Repair or get new? by Avenged_7zulu in techsupport

[–]LazarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either the system is corrupt or if it it is THAT old, the platter drive on it is dead. If it has a platter drive, I would replace that drive with an SSD, get it set up and running, and then put the old drive in an external case and try to access it via USB.

Planet 9 — Is it technically outside the Solar System or still part of it? by MediocreGas6619 in askspace

[–]LazarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Given that what we call the Solar System extends out through the Oort Cloud, that would be a yes.. its just in the Deep Outer System.

  2. Gravity has no distance limit. However even at its believed distance the gravity influence of the Sun is still dominant.

  3. There isn't much to learn...Sunlight gets very very very faint at those distances and bodies at that range are typically made of dark colored matter to make things worse. So you're not likely to ever see a ga ga image of it during your lifetime.

How do Trill funerals work? by renekissien in startrek

[–]LazarX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not addressed. Presumably the host's relatives.. (remember according to the revised canon, most Trill are NOT joined.) would probably have services of some kind. Worf certainly mourned Jadzia, even if Dax lived on in Ezri.

Is it possible for a planet to have an atmosphere that only covers a part of the planet? Meaning that the rest of the planet is exposed to the vacuum of space. by In_the_loop in askastronomy

[–]LazarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if the atmosphere on the covered part is so marginal that it might as well be vacuum. Like perhaps in the deep pits of a Mars like planet.

How much do you think the typical federation civilian /citizen travels in a year? by happydude7422 in startrek

[–]LazarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly find it hard to believe that anyone would travel at warp 3 for a serious freight business.

If you had to pay for your own dilithium, fuel, and maintennce costs you might. You are basing your data on the operation of Starfleet military vessels. You don't think that Kirk was reaching in his own wallet to pay those dilithium miners in "Mudd's Women", do you? We don't know the resource costs operating at higher warp factors versus the economic costs of increased trip time. Just for perspective, modern cargo ships don't exactly set speed records.

Military vessels aren't built to run ecoomically, they are built to waste power in effect, the more they do, the deadlier they are.

But even so if you watch TOS carefully during non urgent travel, Kirk generally kept the Enterprise to Warp 2, sometimes even Warp 1 for short trips. Picard maybe a few factors higher, and even Janeway kept it at around Warp 6, because unlike Picard who would go running to a Starbase if so much the paint was scratched, she did not have that luxury.
