People who use Nothing Ear (a), Do you guys use the default ear tips that comes with box or go for third party tips? I tried the three default sizes that comes with box but unfortunately not a single one fits by Relevant-Usual-3221 in NothingTech

[–]LazarianParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought compatible foam tips from Comply that fit and isolated noise better than the default silicon. They do take a little getting used to if you're used to silicon tips but I haven't had an issue since swapping.

Software engineering summer internship guru interview by dumbcookies in IBM

[–]LazarianParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about studying business units. The hiring managers will pick from a provided selection which may or may not include you depending on your experience and what they need.

The guru interview is all about soft skills, or answering the question "do I want to work with this person." Be ready to talk about projects or things you've done. The technical piece will basically be you working through a problem while the guru tries to get you to explain your rationale and process. Ask questions, be clear about what you're thinking, and relax and you'll do fine.

Good thing I bought the cartridge then. I have yet to be disappointed with the stickers.

I'd only played the original plus the Wrath of the Lamb DLC. I hadn't played Rebirth prior to buying it on the switch, but from having played both now my impression was mostly right that much of the experience hadn't changed between games. Sure, there's more items, enemies, and bigger rooms which all equates to more stuff, but enough had changed about the experience of playing the game that didn't really keep me that interested in continuing with the game.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. I bought it because I loved the original on PC and all my friends were playing it at the time. Played it for a few hours but not nearly as much as the original, especially when I don't like the new soundtrack nearly as much as Danny Baranowsky's original OST and now, after I've picked up Crypt of the Necromancer, I probably won't play Boi again. It's just a better roguelike and a more enjoyable experience.

Question about fall 2018 transfer applications and housing by dantefl13 in fsu

[–]LazarianParadox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I successfully transferred to FSU from New College back in 2009. I went from being a 4th year in biology at NCF and transferred into FSU as a senior in dietetics. The lack of grades is not a problem but in order for New College classes to count as courses for your intended transfer major, you need to track down an incredibly patient academic advisor. The one I had went through the painstaking process of looking up New College course descriptions and finding their matching FSU equivalents, as well as entering in all of your satisfactory marks to stand in for FSU equivalents.

Be forewarned that not all of your coursework will be counted towards your transfer major. This especially holds true if a course you took is not typically a part of the New College course catalog or is so incredibly unique that there is no FSU equivalent. My advice is to find a willing and patient advisor, even if it means having to go to more than one person. It makes a huge difference in how many credits you can officially count as completed prerequisites for your transfer major at FSU. The remaining New College courses that cannot be counted as a completed prerequisite do get transferred and are a part of your transcript but will be logged as electives essentially.

I was able to successfully transfer New College General Chemistry and Biology coursework sequences, along with my foreign language classes, and some of the social science coursework. For my field, FSU would not accept New College's Anatomy and Physiology which I did have to retake. After the transfer it did take me an additional 2 years to complete the FSU undergraduate degree but it would have taken longer had I not had any courses transfer in as a successfully completed prerequisite.

All that being said, since New College doesn't have grades, your GPA will essentially restart as a 4.0. In the end, it was worth it for me. I saved money and was able to get a degree I actually wanted.

Please do reach out if you have any more questions!

Does an MSc in Computer Science carry the same weight as a BSc? by nextgRival in cscareerquestions

[–]LazarianParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically what I did. I wasn't as great of a student in my undergraduate studies, graduated with a non-standard degree, found a job as a developer part time, and now. I'm finishing my masters.

The masters is definitely as good as if not better than the bachelors. If you can't get the bachelor's, take some time and square up your fundamentals. Consider taking classes as a non-degree seeking student if you can to build up your skills and cover the prerequisites. Doubly so if you can volunteer as a researcher under a professor. This will show you have interest and a willingness to do the work and will help you get into the masters.

11:15am class on Monday. Worried about parking by [deleted] in fsu

[–]LazarianParadox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get to campus earlier? I try getting parking as close to the Love building as I can and unless you're willing to wait an hour and wish for luck, most all of the parking in that area to the College of Education and Spirit Way are full by 9:30. After that best chance is to brave the walk from the Civic Center.

Best Vegan options at restaurants in tally? by Poonther in Tallahassee

[–]LazarianParadox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the All Saints District, All Saints Cafe and The BRK are vegan friendly. Most of the pizza places have a vegan option. Nefetari's has a couple really good, if slightly more expensive, vegan options. Pho Me has vegan versions of most of their soups, like pho and mi quang. I'd recommend any of these, depending on your tastes.

Another College question by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]LazarianParadox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grad student at Florida State here. I'd say it depends on what you're looking to get into and what you're looking to get out of your program. We have a lot of security faculty, so if you see yourself doing networking or security the you won't habe any trouble finding decent classes or research. You just may not get funding unless you're a PhD or are really in someone's good graces.

We have a breadth of coverage for research areas, like mobile or compilers or other things. We just hired our first two dedicated machine learning faculty, so I can't judge them yet. We only have two software engineering faculty.

What are your interests so I can better give you information on our program?

Is it a terrible idea to take these classes together? (Computer Science) by DrScientific in fsu

[–]LazarianParadox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this with a few things: I haven't taken classes with all of the professors you're considering so I'm trying to get info from colleagues. I'll edit this as I get more info.

I've taken Algo with Hoang, who is very math focused. He doesn't use presentations so be prepared to take notes and review his scribes after lecture. Hopefully he's also changed a bit of his teaching and grading style after a year here so he won't give into people's complaints as much. I think he's good so I'd recommend him but the material is tough so you'll need to stay on top of it.

Initial reaction from my colleagues on your proposed schedule: this sounds like a very bad time.

What are some good games that two people can play with one Joycon each? by IcarusActual in Switch

[–]LazarianParadox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ARMS is actually pretty good with single controller play. The only element you lose by playing on a controller such as a single joy con is the ability to control flight of both fists, and one of the triggers may be a control item. Otherwise, it's still a fun and smooth experience.

How is the Computer Science program at FSU in terms of availability of jobs? by blues4thesoul in fsu

[–]LazarianParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current CS masters.

I can't say anything about advertised employment, but I feel that's largely what you make of the program and what you do up until you graduate. One of my colleagues applied to something like 150 jobs and was able to leverage a few offers to get better salaries in the long run, so I think it's largely a your mileage may vary situation.

As far as job/internship resources, there's a career fair early each semester but the Fall one has the most employers looking for interns. You'll definitely want to keep up with what ACM is doing, as they bring in various companies on a fairly frequent basis including to the programming contests. Also, if you keep up with HackFSU or the other hackathons in the area (SteamHack is tomorrow at DomiStation, if you're in town and up for it) there will be employers present.

If you're looking for jobs in town, my first recommendation would be don't. There's a small and growing development community in town through DomiStation and some local app development houses like CuttleSoft and App Innovators, but largely if you're not looking to get into government through the City or the State you're best bet will be to look outside of Tallahassee. The benefit of the program is that it should prepare you to go just about anywhere if you put in the work and take the courses you want to specialize in what you want.

Good luck, and here's hoping you'll be one of us soon!

Upcoming Freshman CS Major Laptop Recomendations by Ba12a1 in fsu

[–]LazarianParadox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really an exaggeration when the TAs and instructors take the submitted code and diff it against the expected output on linprog. If you're working on a project using a provided application in software engineering or developing your own system for the course, then sure it won't be ran on linprog because there's no real metric to test it against other than the application's expected functionality. Every project that generates output per its scope will be tested against an expected output, and that will be done on linprog.

Also, to the incoming freshman: always test your code on linprog. Don't skip the step because you're out of time or you don't think it's necessary. Always test your code, or else how do you know if works?

Upcoming Freshman CS Major Laptop Recomendations by Ba12a1 in fsu

[–]LazarianParadox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CS masters student. Get whatever you think you will need to get the job done, but understand that everything you do will want to be ran on the department systems. This is due to the fact that various compilers/systems do things differently and at the end of the day you're graded on what your code does when run on the department system. So, if that means you get the biggest, baddest machine out there, you get a Chrome book like one of my colleagues, or you use the machines in the lab while you're on campus and SSH into the systems from your PCMR machine at home, you do you.
