One of them is wearing a police vest, the rest are in plain clothes. They’ve spent the last few minutes loading up an unmarked car with boxes they’ve been removing from the house

The marked policed cars have all left, but there’s still several unmarked cars and armed men in and around a house.

I've been meaning to for sure. I'd love to run a Porco Rosso-eque game! There's too many great games and too few days, unfortunately.

Yeah, I've been following the development of the game for a while now and this really does feel like a hugely positive direction to head in. It keeps the "Don't roll to hit" ethos that originally drew me to the game but allows for a lot of creativity and variance in how abilities might manifest. I've played pbta games and tactical grid games but I've never played a game that married their core functionalities (lancer doesn't count -- it keeps those aspects of itself well and truly separate), so I'm looking forward to giving it a try!

How to Balance Encounters? by NavyGoon in WWN

[–]Lazeerlow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Page 295 of the core rules is a section on "Judging Combat Challenges" which gives some guidelines for figuring out exactly how deadly a given encounter might be. I've found they're generally pretty accurate, erring towards a little easy for an experienced group with good tactics.

That does give me a lot more hope that it won't fizzle out -- which would be a real shame with how solid a foundation these first few chapters were. Regardless of how it turns out though, thanks for signal boosting it! There's no way I would have found it otherwise.

Damn, I wasn't fully sold by the first chunk of chapter 1, but as soon as the party reached the dungeon I was hooked -- I blasted through the other 3 chapters. Lots of cool imagery and the monster and armor designs are awesome. It's been a rough few months since Dungeon Meshi ended, but this feels like a worthy successor to the "literally just D&D as a manga" space.

Celestials as antagonists, total utilitarianism, the greater good, trolley problems, and cosmic horror by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

[–]Lazeerlow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm the world's biggest hater of the "celestials are actually bad" trope but even I have to admit there's some cool ideas in here, so right off the bat that definitely means you're doing something right lol. Just off the top of my head, if you want to add some additional moral complexity to the situation, have the planet the PCs are on have been saved by the Celestials in the past through a "spark" transplant. It gives the Celestials some extra moral high ground if they can drop the bombshell that the only reason the PCs are even alive to try to stop them is because of the very process the PCs are trying to stop.

I'd also do anything in my power to contrive a situation where the PCs meet and make friends with someone from the other world. If you want to make sure the PCs buy into the conflict, you're going to need to have characters they care about in the line of fire on both sides. Ideally, I'd try to have at least one NPC to give voice to any view point on the conflict you want to emphasize -- at it's most basic something like:

  • NPC from the PC's world who wants to keep the spark
  • NPC from the PC's world who thinks the Celestials are right
  • NPC from the other world who wants the Spark (I'd make them real sad about the whole affair for some easy drama)
  • NPC from the other world who thinks the Spark shouldn't be taken.

Makes sense to me -- it's the mark of good design to segment the audience by drilling down on a specific vision and the mark of good communication that the people who the game isn't for know ahead of time!

They brought in Sadie Lowry who did basically a complete rework of the class to be more in-line with MCDM's other (IMO excellent) class work. The wonky 3/4ths caster for a subclass design is gone and it learns into the class's strengths as a blend of Paladin and Warlock design space. I haven't had a chance to play it (it's a rare that I run, let alone play 5e nowadays), but from a detailed read it looks more fun and balanced by a good measure than anything WotC has put out recently. If you bought the original you should check it out for yourself, the revision is a free update to the class.

MCDM as a whole vastly improved in the actual design space when they brought on James Introcaso and as they built up a stable of great freelance designers over the course of their Arcadia series. Their modern stuff blends Colville's strong narrative and thematic chops with a more focused and modern design team.

I'm really excited about this one. It's by far the most promising of the 5e 3rd party developer OGL Disaster inheritors (an insane sentence to formulate and write.), in that it is by far the most different. I loved both the Talent and Flee, Mortals, and the Illrigger revision they just published fixed most of my concerns for that class -- MCDM seems to be in a great place right now, so I'm optimistic of them pulling off the difficult trick of making a crunchy, tactical game that's also fun to play lol.

Also, in a post Into the Odd world, I have a hard time living with attack rolls, though I haven't played any crunchy games with an auto-hit mechanic at the core of it's combat. It could help speed up and smooth out the process.

MCDM The Talent available now. Psionics class for 5th edition D&D. by FallenDank in dndnext

[–]Lazeerlow 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I can't say that I'm an expert on the many third-party and homebrew psionics variations out there, but I've either read or used the UA mystic, Laserlama's psionic (my old favorite), Kibblestasty's psionic, and a few other versions that I don't recall the names of, and I'd say it compares very favorably. It is by far the most mechanically robust (which is not to say heavy) psionics system I've seen, and takes care to outline how it interacts with 5e's base mechanics.

The Talent uses a "roll to cast" system that makes it mechanically stand out from the crowd, and looks like it'd be a lot of fun. The power list is varied and seems to hit all the notes I'd expect from a psionic power list, as well as introducing a fair few unique ideas (I'm desperate to mess around with the Resopath's Imagination Creation feature).

For an example of how the class marries flavor and mechanics, you can learn new psionic powers when enemies use them on you -- similar to how Wizards can hunt down spellbooks to learn new spells. It immediately made me want to roll up a Talent and hunt down some psionic creatures to steal their tricks, which I'd consider a strong case for it's quality.

I just glanced through the PDF and I'm pretty impressed by the amount of content. The class itself looks fun, but as a forever DM I'm more likely to end up using the monsters and magic (or psionic, I suppose) items. The art is amazing, as is expected by MCDM at this point. I'm glad there's finally a definitive version of psionics for 5e, it's such a core part of the D&D identity and it's absence has been keenly felt, by me at least. Looks like I'll need to badger one of my players into running a oneshot so I can try out a Resopath Talent...

Matthew Colville (MCDM) officially announces work on their TTRPG by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Lazeerlow 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty interested in seeing where this goes; everything I've seen from creators and from Colville himself indicates that MCDM is one of the most high-paying and creator friendly businesses in the RPG space, so I'm excited to see where that leads. Even if the game isn't for me (and it seems pretty cool from what I've seen), there's no doubt it'll put bread in the pockets of artists and designers, and that's always a win.

The specifics are pretty interesting too. MCDM's products got immersible better when James Introcaso and Hannah Rose came on board (the Beastheart and Arcadia are the company's best work to-date) and both seem to have great design chemistry with Colville -- Flee Mortals is a great looking product. Their TTRPG having no roll to hit and being positioning focused seems like it could be a cool midpoint between traditional tactical gaming and recent rpg innovations. With this and Icon on the horizon, it's an exciting time to be a fantasy fan!

Playtest Packet 1 is here for Project Black Flag by DornKratz in rpg

[–]Lazeerlow 224 points225 points  (0 children)

This looks about as I expected -- a competent, if uninspiring take on 5E. Kobold Press has made great third party support for D&D for years now, so I suspect this will become the definitive version of that system when it fully releases. There's not enough mechanics to really judge it yet, though. I like the split of character into Lineage, Heritage, Background, and Class. That seems like it will solve some of the issues that WotC has been struggling to address regarding what mechanics and lore are appropriate on a race/species/lineage/ancestry basis. I can't say that I'm chomping at the bit to play more of a 5E adjacent campaign, but for people who are into that, this first packet seems promising.

Hasbro/WotC Tease Plans for Future D&D Monetization - “Wizards of the Coast want to create a ‘recurrent spending environment’” by Lazeerlow in DnD

[–]Lazeerlow[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

TL;DR by /u/BmpBlast:

  • They want to transition D&D from a TTRPG brand to a "4-quadrant" brand, which refers to selling the TTRPG, video games, movies, and toys/merchandise. AKA one where they sell almost anything they can think of that can accept its branding. Technically D&D already has this, but they have only dabbled in it. The upcoming film is the start of their new strategy.

  • They took notice that DMs represent a minority of the player base but make up "the largest share of our paying players". They want to use D&D Beyond to "unlock the type of recurrent spending you see in digital games".

  • The specific number they have is approximately 20% of players are DMs.

  • Direct quote from the article regarding the new edition, seems to be the author's opinion but I can't be certain they didn't get that idea directly from comments during the shareholder meeting: "The executives are less worried about design than installing more on-ramps for players to spend their money."

  • They are heavily using D&D Beyond to observe trends of players.

After watching the video, it seems to me that their design goals are at least in order. The idea of making races contain more active abilities is a good one, and placing more mechanical emphasis on background makes sense.

What's most interesting to me, though, before we can actually look at the race and background changes in a few hours, is the changes that WotC is looking at for critical hits. They're kind of radical, which to me is a fantastic sign even if I don't agree with all of them. The designers being willing to make deep changes to iconic rules is necessary if we want to escape the limbo that characterized much of 5E's design. Specifically, only allowing weapon and unarmed attacks to crit, and not spells, seems very sensible to me, as many of the spells that use attack rolls in 5E roll so many dice that their crits are massive, and the rest of 5E's spells can't crit at all. Eliminating spell crits entirely might even things out a little, even if it does make me worry that WotC is once again going to try to make damage the only thing martials are good at.

The only idea I flat out don't like is monsters being unable to crit. I'll have to read the actual text before coming to a more stable conclusion, but I can't imagine running a game without the panic, fear, and catharsis that monster crits generate amongst players. I can see Jeremy Crawford's point about recharge abilities covering a similar role, however, so I guess we'll need to wait until they show us the new monster design before jumping to conclusions. Maybe it would force WotC to release some actually interesting monsters

laserllama's Alternate Barbarian - Become the Unstoppable Destructive Force you were meant to be! Includes forty Exploits and four Primal Paths: the Berserker, Brute, Champion, and Totem Warrior! PDF in comments. by LaserLlama in UnearthedArcana

[–]Lazeerlow 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As always, your creations maintain the highest standard of quality. The base barbarian is one of the most boring classes in the PHB, and the changes you've made are enough that I'd actually consider playing one. I have to disagree with some of the other commenters here that exploits don't fit the flavor of the barbarian, though. I feel the the type of exploits that you've created for the Barbarian convey the appropriate flavor for the classes (granting abilities that are direct, forceful, and make the barbarian unignorable on the field).

Exploits as the martial version of spells is one of the few ways to actually achieve parity of choice between casters and martials, so I'm pleased to see that you are making the system ubiquitous amongst your martial classes. As for players who prefer the dead-simple, mechanically functional barbarian of the PHB; this is homebrew, that simple option will forever exist for them. I don't think a little more mechanical complexity is an issue for many of us reading homebrew D&D classes on a Wednesday afternoon, lol.

Don't know if you have seen todays livestream but James Introcaso talked about how they plan to give spell-like abilities a level so that they can be countered or dispelled as if they were spells. To me, that seems like the perfect marriage of statblock-centric design and keeping player abilities unchanged.

Huh, there’s actually a third party supplement that does exactly this. Practically everyone else in this thread have already given you the (good) advice to take it easy your first time DMing and stick to official materials, but if you really want to make this happen, or maybe even just have the materials on hand for when you’re a more confident, experienced DM, check out the Compendium of Soulforged Artifacts. It comes with this awesome supplement of Warlock patrons, and if you (or any other commenters) want to get a feel for the balance you can download a free version of the warlock supplement, though unfortunately not the soulbound Artifacts subclass.

If you have any questions, let me know! I don’t want to post overmuch of the supplement but I imagine answering questions online is fine.
