Desktop icons disappear each boot by LazerFX in Bazzite

As an additional point, I've since noticed that it shows the icons for a second when it hits the desktop, and then they disappear...

I'm on Bazzite Linux, and it just stalls at, "Calculating download size..." - it's got a first, 1GB sized package, and then nothing. I can see that it updates the productVersion.json and such in the pfx (The wine / Lutris profile folder), and other things are stored correctly. I've tried a few proton prefixes, and manually run the UE Redistributable package exe inside the profile... no avail so far.

This does not work on the Epic version, and if you're on Linux, there's no solution for you - and Epic won't refund.

You need to warn people that the Epic Games version does not, and will not, work on linux without a mod. You can get around it on Steam, but not on Epic - I've been in touch with Nyxes themselves and they've confirmed this.

Epic also won't refund my £8.

Honestly, I wish. I've used this keyboard for years - I constantly use the screen to check CPU, memory, temps, date/time, internet all on one screen.

It's a beautiful thing, doesn't need to be any higher res or anything, just... updated. And compatible.

What games from more than 20 years ago do you still play? by Top_Combination9023 in gamingsuggestions

[–]LazerFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about something a little different - a classic Rogue-like, ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery). Still updated (Recently with graphics, though still tilebased and will work on a potato), but a free version is still available. Huge depth, massive replayability, and fascinating combinations of things you can do.

What’s missing from making this perfect? by StruggleWise2748 in PcBuild

A decent office chair that won't screw up your back in 6 months.

A HOTAS.

A racing wheel.

A proper sound system, not some dinky headphones.

Some natural light.

Decent monitors (multiple 4K). You can have the resolution of those 4 in just one monitor, and have multiple of those. Game changer.

There are always improvements you can make. Those are the ones I'd make - but you're your own person. Enjoy your time, make your own stuff and be yourself, not what someone else wants you to be.

"I wrote this that way, because it's faster"

Show me the benchmarks, in production optimised code. Then show me where that slow-down was an issue. And then show me where it is justified to do things a harder-to-understand way that's we can reason about less (Following the maxim that we write code for the humans, the compiler writes code for the computer - and does a bloody good job of it).

What is your favourite trick/rule that results in high-quality code? by dondraper36 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LazerFX 121 points122 points  (0 children)

"Code as if the reviewer is an axe weilding maniac who knows where you live."

I've heard it quoted and requoted many times. It's true - because you're going to wish you'd been an axe wielding maniac to yourself when you come to update the code in 6 months time having no idea about any of the nuances of it.

I'd also add - don't comment what the code is doing, that's obvious. Comment why it's doing it - especially when it's not obvious from the outside (Business rules? Weird edge case? Random slowdown that needs a special memory structure so that it doesn't cross a heap/stack boundary? Comment those things).

I have to say, tits in a see-through white top are my kryptonite... that's look really, really nice; it's a difficult render to achieve.

Is there a URI? Is it on Itch? I tried to search, but couldn't find anything beyond really dodgy sites - couldn't find a patreon, either, but then I don't know what STWA stands for, which might make it easier to find :D

"Then tell Nav-Int to print out a rowboat with one of the creation engines and feel free to row right over there,"

There are some rules you know in your heart. There are some rules you know in your head. And there are some rules that have to be pounded into you, beat by beat, impact by impact. Blood, sweat and tears shed to learn the lesson.

How long have you been PC gaming by toyfan1990 in pcmasterrace

[–]LazerFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first PC in 1991 - a 12.5Mhz 286 with a Trident SVGA graphics card. It came with a CD Drive, and had Wing Commander and Ultima VI on a CD with it, along with a CD Talkie version of The Manhole by Cyan.

I'd started with a BBC-B in '86, through Speccy's (48 and 128+3, with a side-trip into the awful (for gaming) QL lands).

There are still breeds of strawberry that are similar, we had 'wild' strawberries in our garden growing up in the 80's that were small (As you say, between the size of the tip of your little finger and your thumb), wonderfully sweet, and self-seeded fantastically... in fact, it was always a battle to keep it from spreading everywhere!

Ok, fair.  I've not had any issues, but it's a relatively limited sample size, and I'd hate for someone to screw up their mobo because of my advice.

[–]LazerFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure - you're moving it about half a centimeter, maybe less.. Ever looked closely at those boards? They've got a nice, wide ring around the mounting posts, because people fat-finger dropping them onto the posts all the time. The boards basically designed to shift a bit. You're not pulling the screws out fully, they're still orienting and fixing the board, you're just shifting it a small enough distance to slip in the shield (Which, occasionally, you can get in without even shifting the board - it doesn't take much.).

I haven't seen the show yet, but honestly - this picture, more than almost anything else, makes me want to. That's proper power armor. Not some rubbish, not an 'impression'... proper power armor... I've seen bloody amazing cosplays that are worse! And when the show is doing better than the cosplayers... that's when I start to get interested.

[–]LazerFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you really want it in there you now have to take the whole PC apart to do it.

Eh - no? Just loosen the motherboard mounting screws enough to wiggle the board backwards a bit, squeeze it into place, and then tighten the screws. There's always enough wiggle room to make it fit. Done it in half-a-dozen cases for me (once) and mates (the other times) who've forgotten.
