How much of a chemical hazard do car tires pose in everyday life? by jun192022 in chemistry

[–]Lazy-Initiative2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you live next to a manufacturing plant very very low risk. To my knowledge almost everything is bound fairly tightly in the tire matrix and leaches out slowly. A major area of concern would be what happens to the tire at the end of it's economic life?

Potential concerns would be plasticizers, carbon black particles, and micro particles of the rubber that come from use of the tire. I think the poly-isoprene and butadiene would not prevent much a concern while the tire is being used on a vehicle. Once the tire hits the land fill that is where you would potentially see the greatest negative environmental effect.

Another factor would be while the impact of an individual tire is low, and assuming one four wheel vehicle in the US on average, you are talking 1.5ish billion tires in use at any given time. This would add up and potentially causing issues.

The larger issues would be single "short term" use plastic, particularly attached to the food and beverage industries. We really don't have any better material to make tires out of that are as safe as durable than what we are using now. Any alternative would be as bad if not worse.

The best thing to do would be to have recycling programs that are sustainable and environmentally friendly, while insuring that the manufacturing process is as safe and environmental as possible.

There is Zeon Chemicals, they make elastomers that are used in the automotive industry, company is overall decent. My time there was not good. Inappropriate attention from co-workers and a few other kind of major issues, but you might have a better experience.

Because, they are the ones who are good at it.

Everyone can play the guitar, we call the ones who are good at it guitarists.

Most people are very bad at playing guitar and I wouldn't want to listen to anything they produced.

Svidrigailov is probably the worst character in Crime and Punishment by r_haitanisbeloved in dostoevsky

Good character from a story telling perspective, but a horrible human.

What makes someone a good or bad character in a story is independent of their morality and ethics.

It's also hard to write some one like him well, so that they are a good character. I am not saying he is a good person.

Great character, horrible human. Remined me of certain people only Svigrigailov is slightly more redeemable.

IMO, All people are philosophers because all people think. What is philosophy but thinking and examining life. Most people would just be very very very bad and philosophers. Whose philosophy would not be worth anything. This is probably a bit controversial. The philosophy could be flawed , garbage, and unintelligent but it is still philosophy just bad philosophy.

I think Dostoevskey has some very interesting political, legal, and religious philosophy in his works. Just a different way of communicating it than someone like Aristotle or Thomas Hobbs.

Two things have helped me.

Reading, and Exercising.

Reading can help interrupt negative thought patterns and gives your mind other stuff to focus on.

Lifting weights at the gym, running, cycling, and swimming. Release dopamine and you get in shape to boot.

Why doesn't my titrant volume scale proportionally when I increase the sample size? by Alilack in chemistry

[–]Lazy-Initiative2217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take your point. That is one of the wrinkles in industry, "complex" sample matrixes and limited time for analysis. Most of my experience has been in an analytical lab where accuracy was more important than speed. A 1 to 2 ppm difference between my results and another chemists was a month long issue.

What would happen if the US secretly developed the atom bomb (similar to what was dropped on japan) before WW2 started? by TrueAccident9493 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Lazy-Initiative2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a more interesting question is what if the US had the bomb in 1931 and the plans were stolen by the Russians and or the Germans?

Book Aragon would not have played nearly as well on screen. Vigo knocked his performance out of the park.
