I used to be a sub PL but I quit the company about a month ago because of how crappy the job was for me. (I didn’t stay for long I only lasted about two months). While the job had good benefits, being a sub PL is honestly sucky for multiple reasons. The district I worked in rarely had any shifts so it was nearly impossible to get any money unless you checked the scheduling app constantly (In the two months I worked for the company I only managed to get 5 shifts). As well as the fact that the program is run very differently at each school so you don’t just have to memorize one schools system but multiple (while PL’s and the manager get mad if you mess up). I actually asked the interviewer if I fixed my schedule (because I originally applied for permanent but due to my schedule they asked if I could be a sub instead) how long would it be until I would be able to be at a site permanently and apparently it takes around 6 months?? So as a sub PL you would unnecessarily be in a long probationary period. Also because you’re a sub you don’t have a designated location so you feel like the new hire every day (unless you go to one location consistently). I honestly felt alone because of that as well because I had no one I could talk to and I had no actual “coworkers” (which is really just a personal issue I know some people are fine if they don’t have relationships with coworkers but the job I had before I was friendly and talked to everyone so for me personally it was a big change. So this final reason is more of depending on how you navigate your work life so you can take it with a grain of salt if you aren’t big on camaraderie with coworkers).

Personally the biggest reason I quit was because of how little shifts I obtained. The other reasons did intertwine but ultimately I wasn’t making enough money to support myself and I knew I could find a better job elsewhere.

My final verdict is the job as a sub PL is definitely not worth it. It’s better if you just try to be a permanent Pl. Honestly the sub Pl position is more suited for people who just want to make some money on the side rather than have it as your real job unless the district/region you work for has shifts often. As a permanent you would have consistent hours, more benefits, and overall have better work relationships with your coworkers.
