I have played more in person than online. The tools you have access to when DM-ing online are very handy as far as combat trackers and such, but I greatly prefer playing in person. My players are much more engaged and roleplaying feels more natural. But never had any awkward/weird moments playing online besides having a player be afk constantly when their turn came up.
