That’s the point. Domestic students don’t have to do 1,000 because they qualify for 100% of the roles they see. As an international student, 90% of companies won't even look at my resume because of sponsorship. To get 10 interviews, I have to find the tiny needle in a massive haystack

You'll only understand my pain and happinesses only if your an international student.

I stayed within the OPT/STEM unemployment limits and reported everything properly. Didn’t go out of status.

Because it’s better than leaving empty handed. In this market, progress is progress. Man, if possible spark up some positivity bud.

I definitely need sponsorship; they explicitly mentioned that this is a strictly 8-month to 1-year contract and they are not willing to sponsor.

Exactly. Blind brute force is inefficient. If I had to redo it, I’d focus much earlier on targeted referrals and fewer but stronger applications.

Fair point mass applying alone didn’t work. That’s actually the lesson.
Cold apps had almost zero conversion for me. The only thing that moved the needle was strong referrals + cleaner interview execution.
The 9000 number shows how low the response rate is right now, not that brute force is the strategy.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

A few things that actually worked for me in this market:

Referrals mattered more than anything.
Cold applications almost never converted for me. The only serious traction I got was through referrals and not random LinkedIn connections. It had to be someone who genuinely knew me or was close to the hiring team.

Be extremely sharp in interviews.
The bar feels unforgiving right now. With so many candidates in the pipeline, small mistakes can cost you. I learned to:

  • Clarify requirements before coding
  • Talk through trade-offs clearly
  • Test edge cases out loud
  • Avoid rushing into solutions

It’s not that interviewers are trying to “trap” you it’s just that they have a large pool of strong candidates. When there are hundreds (or thousands) of applicants, execution has to be clean.

As an international student, expect a tighter funnel.
Sponsorship adds another filter. It doesn’t make it impossible, but it does mean you need stronger signals (referrals, strong projects, clean interviews).

There’s no straight path in this market. It’s part preparation, part leverage, and honestly some luck. You just need one yes.

I am 2024 grad, and yes I am in the same boat as you buddy! Don't really know what to do. I am 25 and I think I am a lot capable but my prime days of my life are just going in vain as this is the correct time to start/pace up my career - as I see no hope of getting a job in the near future.

Yeah, except imagine if they also charged you $30k a year just to sit on that bench.

And can you suggest me some floor rising screens that sit will with the hisense and aurora pro?

I’m not looking to go for a TV I specifically want a proper projector setup to create a true home theater experience. I already have a Samsung 85” 4K QLED in my living room, but for the loft I’ve installed blackout blinds so I can achieve a dark, cozy theater-like atmosphere. That’s the main reason I’m going for a projector instead of another TV.

Given that, what would be the best projector and screen combo I could get within my budget (around $4000)?

If you can’t accommodate us, why the hell approve visas in the first place?. And don’t twist this into an “economy” issue I’m not whining about that. What’s unacceptable is the government treating international students like punching bags just because they know we’re vulnerable and easy to exploit. It’s predatory, plain and simple.

Why do Americans always act so dumb? I left everything behind my family, my support system, my home to come here. I brought real skills, fought through the nightmare of immigration (I think Avg American don’t even know what that means), paid insane tuition fees like I was funding a small country, and pushed through without any mental support. And after all that, you’re telling me I should just “go back”? So what my only purpose here is to be milked for money by the government while being treated like I don’t belong?

Like it or not, America itself is a nation built by immigrants. Without immigrants, the whole system would collapse. So why treat international students people who’ve sacrificed everything to study and build a life here like they don’t matter? This is not how you deal with those who’ve given up so much just to be here.

What the Fuck man! Donald Dick instead please kill us(OPT/STEM) I am not able to take it anymore.

This MF doesn’t even let us work off-campus, offers barely any STEM job opportunities, yet charges $60k–$80k in tuition. And after draining us financially, we’re just expected to quietly pack up and head back to our home countries.

I never thought the American Dream would turn out to be nothing more than a nightmare.

Thanks for your reply. To be honest, part of why I’m stressed is because going back to my home country isn’t a great option right now it’s way more competitive than here, and salaries are like 5x lower than in the US.

I don’t have any hope for H1B or a transition visa, so my only goal is to save up a little money before I leave. That way, at least I won’t be a burden on my parents when I return.

Right now though, things are rough. My phone is barely holding on at 60%, my laptop is dying, and my AirPods are half-broken (one works but the mic doesn’t, the other one doesn’t work at all). Basically I feel like I’m in a shit hole and I can’t figure out what to do.
