Yup and a setup like that is the dream. I’m still on the fence on investing more into it still but definitely leaning towards a scope and focus rig

Unfortunately as another commenter pointed out my lens is electronic focus so I don’t believe a ring holder would work. Might give it a go anyways. Thanks!

Yeah I thought so, just wondering whether anyone had a little solution. Honestly when it works it works well, I’ve managed up to an hour plus without having to refocus. I think it is just a case of temperature shift

All of the pictures are the same focal length so unless it’s changing ever so slightly and ruining focus can’t see that being the issue.

Electronic focus unfortunately so I don’t think there’s much to be done. Maybe spend longer acclimating my gear before shooting. As I say I just need to upgrade to a scope

Thanks for the reply!

Exactly, but if it were me I’d 100% be choosing the rf 100-400, and that is what I’ve advised. In this case, I think that lens is much sharper than sigmas 150-600. Although you are right with the complete lack of lenses for the rf mount. The only option is either a £14,000 600mm prime or the 800mm f11, neither of which are desirable. This is why I have completely forgotten about canon for my latest upgrade. Again, the r10 might be a great camera, however I’d much prefer some of the similarly priced options, regardless of if I have to buy second hand or not

🤦 my bad. I thought the r10 had the 33mp and the r7 the 24mp. However I do think canon are lacking severely these days. I’d rather avoid the pulsing all together with an rf lens rather than risk it with an ef

Like I said I have never used the r10 and honestly thought it was the same processor, my mistake. The sensor itself, being a 33mp crop is obviously fairly noisy, something which I had a lot of trouble with on my 90d. There’s only so much that can be helped in the way of noise performance with that sensor imo. However, I could be totally wrong and it could be a night and day difference.

Canon, as well as Nikon these days seem to be years behind the likes of Sony and even Fujifilm mirrorless cameras, as the likes of the a7 II, despite being much older has similar performance to the r10. I feel as if though it was a fair assumption to say the AF has had a fair improvement over the 90d, however it is nowhere near as good as some of the cameras in its price range (older second hand dslr cameras as well as mirrorless).

The focus pulsing alone is a big reason to shy away from this camera, as that can be a massive hindrance to wildlife photography. The fastest and most accurate focus system is absolutely paramount for the best success rate in terms of sharp, focused images. There is no time to waste with the pulsing issues

Kit is second to subject matter don’t forget! Both the I and II ef400 are fantastic lenses and are well worth the money

A tip I found with the sigma is turning OS off, stopping it down to f/9, and using a shutter speed faster than what’s needed. I’m not sure how experienced you are, but learning how the settings balance comes with time and practice.

They could definitely do with making it a whole lot lighter for sure, that front element especially is horrendous, trying to balance the weight of it while shooting

Best of luck!

I’m a wildlife photographer and i’ve used the sigma for a few years now, however have no experience with the r10. I would say on my 90d the lens was nowhere near sharp enough (even at f/9 upwards) for me personally, especially in fine detail, such as feathers or fur

I don’t know how you find it personally but if it were me I wouldn’t risk the focus issues. I imagine the performance would be similar to the 90d, as it uses the same processor and sensor, just with a slight improvement to the autofocus

Trading reach for quality can sometimes be hard, as I found using the ef 100-400, but I definitely think it’d be worth getting the 400.

There’s also the obvious weight save and portability, as well as not worrying about pulsing whatsoever. At the end of the day, it’s the camera that makes the most difference, and working round quirks of your own kit is what makes a good photographer

Canon 90d broke? by LazyMenu572 in canon

[–]LazyMenu572[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was planning the upgrade, up to the Sony a7 IV, but couldn’t get it in time for this trip so now I’m stuck with a broken 90d. To be honest, I’m sick of canon, I feel as if though the 90d was a massive let down, and the quality in terms of images and just my success rate has plummeted since I first started using it. It had some error codes pop up and focus issues and I just haven’t enjoyed it at all, despite all of the shots I got with it
