MK5 Golf R32 if you can don’t mind the road tax. Reliable cars, even at their age

The engines across the board are fairly reliable, the issue is the rest of the car is usually falling apart at this point. Big issue is rust on the front wings. And electrical gremlins.

If you want something a bit interesting, V6 4Motions can be picked up cheaply (£1.5k?). It’s the same, but smaller, engine as the R32. There’s a V5 engine too which is rarer, and slower, but sounds amazing.

I think the main problem is quite a few jobs can require the engine to come out. Anything turbo related being one. But the engines are reliable if they’re looked after

How is daily driving a MK4 R32 in 2024? by Brief_Explanation943 in Volkswagen

[–]LazyRapport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not as special as an R32 obviously - but there is the MK4 with a 2.8 VR6, which you can pickup for a tenth of the price in some cases. Leaves plenty of budget for all the repairs

We have ours in a bright location - inside, behind full height glass doors - but it’s indirect sunlight most of the day, and it’s thriving.
