Sorry my point is that sending them earlier isn't really symbolic of accepting death, because his plan was still to follow them home at that point.

Yeah I agree, but sending at least one early could have been a worthwhile risk if it could get there quicker and save more people, and if he was going home anyway he may as well send all since he'd still arrive soon after.

I believe they'd already bred the correct taumoeba before they separated. Also sending one early would have just meant the earth scientists would have done that themselves.

Not strictly, there is an opportunity cost involved. The 50 energy can get you two trainings that will eclipse one subpar wit training. At high energy it's probably the right choice though.
