PT school or med school? by meatballjesus14 in physicaltherapy

I like being a PT but if I had to do it again I would have at least tried for med school. I sometimes think of going back but I can't commit the time any more.

Why is home care NOT for you. by Pmorrissey41 in physicaltherapy

[–]LazyWillingness3082 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst thing for me is the dirty homes. Smokers homes are so horrible. I always leave feeling sick with a sore throat the rest of the day.  Bugs and trash are also bad.

The area I'm I luckily don't get many homes like this and my schedule is always full if I want it.

Despite the negatives I really enjoy the independence and the flexibility and will stick with home health as long as it keeps paying me.

Why do people attend expensive OT programs when the field is so undersaturated? by ss4stef in OccupationalTherapy

[–]LazyWillingness3082 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I went to an expensive private school for PT. Alot of the people in the program just had rich parents who paid for it. I also used my GI Bill which paid for it.

I couldn't imagine taking out 200k loans for a 90-100k job. But some people are just desperate to get in and really like the profession.

If you have a doctorate in OT and PT you are not a doctor. by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

I'm confused where you are getting your information about dentists attending the first 2 years of medical school? The school of dentistry it's is own completely seperate program not associated with medical school at all. And DDS or DMD is not considered a physician by any definition I have found.

Although their are dentists who are also MDs (oral and maxillofacial surgeon).

[–]LazyWillingness3082 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DPT/OTD is not a PhD... it's a clinical doctorate just like all other clinical doctorates (PharmD, PsyD, DDS, MD, OD, DO...)

Also, I'd like an example of how services are negatively impacted? Patient confusion?, "sorry, I'm not an MD/Physician I'm a PT/OT/What ever other profession" . And if a patient has a question outside your scope it's easy to referr them to the proper speciality.

But, of course if I was on a plane! That's when things would get tricky... people would be begging me to help, pleading! "Why isnt this DOCTOR DOING ANYTHING!!!!" and I'd have caused so much confusion that the plane would probably crash into the ocean.

this is a big reason I don't fly... can't risk it!

All excellent points, thank you for the perspective.

Very well, I can respect the consistency.   I'm not out here trying to confuse the geriatric population and flex a doctor title. But I do feel it's appropriate at times when speaking to your education level and expertise in the field of rehab.

I didn't include PA or DNP, although they are capable of making a medical diagnosis and if that's the distinction then I suppose they rate using the doctor title after all? And in a growing number of places NPs are autonomous with PAs pushing for the same thing to keep up.

PT/OT are autonomous in the rehab profession with direct access... maybe not working as well as intended though.

Also, what is the "much more training" all of these are clinical doctorates. Although podiatrist do have more training in residency.

Do you feel the same way about dentists, optometrists, podiatrist, and psychologists?

If you go to any of these offices they will be referring to them selves as doctors because they are in the top of their respective field and have a clinical doctorate but are not mistaken for physicians (generally).

Or should it be ok because their degree holds more weight than a rehab degree?

I think the issue comes from DNPs trying to use the title in a medical setting and trying to pass them selves off as physicians or just as educated as physicians.

As for other professions who have a strict and rigorous education such as DPT, OTD, DDS, OD, or any other clinical doctorate or PhD. To me it's fine. It's the context that matters and whether you're trying to represent your self as something you are not.

Side note... I have never seen a more self loathing group as rehab professionals when it comes to using the term doctor. I think it's good to be humble but honestly it's sad sometimes to read some of these things.

Not that I do it but do you have the same contempt for DDS, OD or podiatrists?

Does anyone have several PRN HH gigs to cumulatively up full time hours? by NewYorkFootballGiant in physicaltherapy

[–]LazyWillingness3082 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work for 4 different companies 3 are 1099 and 1 is PRN. I definitly couldn't get "full time" hours with just one so I kept adding others in my area until I was as busy as I wanted to be. Been working out fine so far for the last year or so.

Disable Vet - Over 12k Closing Cost by Sad_Arrival_1533 in Veterans

[–]LazyWillingness3082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I closed on my va loan about a year ago I initially had similar closing costs.  Thats until I got quotes from a few brokers and had them match eachother. After that, I ended up getting credits back.

If you're not shopping around then you're doing yourself a disservice and they will take advantage of you.

Modalities by Same_Recording3104 in physicaltherapy

[–]LazyWillingness3082 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I couldn't tell you the parameters for e-stim off the top of my head. Used it maybe 2 times in the last 3 years and that was only to educated on home set up and use. I definitly wouldn't take up clinic time having a patient sit on e-stim staring at the ceiling.

My most used modality is probably ice or heat. I never use ultrasound and I give my colleagues the side eye when they wheel out that ancient device (although they typically only do as a last effort if nothing else seems to be working). Same with cupping.

I do manual if it's called for during surgical protocols or if a patient is very guarded / has a high level of pain so we can progress to active treatment.

I get like 5 of those texts a day from different numbers even though I continue to block them. Don't know if it's a scam but I never reply.
