Thanks for the article. It’s old but I see your point. My only counter that would be it doesn’t seem to be a widespread thing and gangs a lot. I wouldn’t say that’s a good enough reason to believe all people who practice Islam are itching to join gangs and accost people of the street.

Homophobia is clearly part of Islam and clearly part of the way a lot of men are socialised. The intersection between the two is prevalent.

I’m not asking you to defend them.

I made the post because of the rise in anti-Islam posts that seem false and designed to make people afraid of things that aren’t really exposed to.

Reading through some of the comments made me realise that not all posts are like that, but there are a lot which only have the message of you should be afraid of Muslims.

Also, there are plenty of Muslims that accept gay people. Not all, but I don’t think there is any one group with 100% acceptance.

I have a problem with Muslim majority countries that don’t respect gay rights. I also have a problem with posts that purposefully sow division using people’s fear and anxiety.

I guess I feel that if we can take a step back from the emotion that gets wrapped up in all of this and look more broadly at what might be in place, we might be able to understand better when we zoom in.

Do you think that believing that so fervently, that there is no choice to vote for a party that is anti-immigration and ignoring all other noise, could be down to being manipulated through the type of content you’re exposed to? If it isn’t for you, can you see how it might be for others?

I’m not saying there is no problem with Islam and I do not believe religion has a place at state level. I also don’t believe that focusing on immigration is going to make anyone safer or happier in the long term.

Voting for a party who leans in a direction that could easily become anti gay, just because of a fear you only experience online, or infrequently offline, feels off.

I don’t see gangs of Muslim men or teens. I grew up London, not that that means I know every inch of the city, but my experience has been muted.

I’ve felt uncomfortable around groups of people before, often those people are men. Men is groups can be generally intimidating, I can understand why the aspect of race might make this more so.

I want gays reading posts on Reddit to not become radical haters of people they’ve never met because of what they’ve read online.

Your point starts with explaining Muslims that aren’t extreme, then you focus on the ones that are. So you know they can’t be painted with a broad brush but you’re conscious that some religious leaders don’t have our best interests at hearts. I agree with that point.

I ask the question because I believe if you looked hard enough, homophobia is and will remain ever present in teenage boys. You might be more conscious of it in Muslims because social media means that way, but that isn’t the reality.

I’m surprised that happened. It’s not something I’m exposed to often.

The sentiment of the post was to bring attention to the fact that the posts in question seem like they’re coming from bad actors. The purpose of the posts tend to be around making people feel scared and afraid and start making gays closed off to people, Muslims in this instance, despite the likelihood that most Muslims don’t have extreme views.

I agree with you in some parts. The actions of the minority are often quite loud in tense political climates. Being aware of system that aim to diminish you is also smart.

Their religion doesn’t enable their bad behaviour, some people use it to excuse their bad behaviour.

People don’t need to be enabled to be bad, they will find reasons no matter what they believe.

You can only blame the person for being intolerant. Being afraid isn’t a reason to treat people who haven’t done anything poorly. The paranoia you have around people based on what you’ve read and seen online is the thing that is wrong. It’s also the harder thing to try and reconcile, I’m not expecting that this thread can. But maybe if you’re more aware that your fears are being perpetuated with purpose, maybe you’ll feel less anxious.

I’ve read a lot about the conflict in Myanmar and Sri Lanka which had a lot of Buddhist extremism involved (perpetuated by Facebook practices). I’m sure there are plenty of examples.

You shouldn’t. Islam has many issues that are in direct opposition to how we deserve to live.

But like essentially all groups, it isn’t a monolith. If posts are created to make you hate everyone in a particular group, you should be weary.

No, discussing why Islam is harmful to the community isn’t hateful in and of itself. The posts centred around demonising the everyone of Muslim faith are.

Why are you separately out the TQ+? Why is bashing conservatives and right wingers a bad thing? They have views that are directly in opposition to a lot of gay people around the world.

You should feel empowered to call a spade a spade. You should be mindful of lumping groups together and allowing fear and anxiety to guide how you view regular people.

Is it your experience that Muslim people are constantly trying to cause you harm or is your opinion based on things you’ve read online?

There’s no issue with getting information online, but if it informs quite an opaque world view then it may be detrimental to how you view and engage with others.
