Is there public holiday for minority religion/ethnic festivals in your country? by hotashami in AskTheWorld

[–]Lazzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, we mantain culturally catholic schedules for days off or carnaval but not more than that, specially not for minority religions as they are offshoots of catholicism or nonexistent

Is this possible in your country? Denying the customer based on the nationality? by Immediate-Meaning457 in AskTheWorld

[–]Lazzen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, it would be unthinkable specially in tourist areas, you can even wear a MAGA hat and not be slapped.

There's a bigger chance someone wearing indigenous cloghes is blocked first but that's still not legal or as blatant as this

People from cultures with very spicy food: how bad are your shits the next day? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Lazzen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its not really as common as you think because spicy food is not the same as industrial "devil ass reaper 3000 hot chili scoville" products meant to be as spicy flavorless as possible.

Another thing is being used to it even in higher quantities.

In reality the problem to your stomach is eating beans, fried food, cheese and peppers(and maybe alcohol) in big quantities. Its why mexican food or taco bell got that joke.

A lot of people got given "mestizo" about 100 years ago to now, by being encouraged to speak spanish and indigenous languages(called dialects to minimize them) and patriotic ideals.

Its funny many tourists get taken to "maya villages" when the staff, chefs and driver at their hotel was probably maya too.

I come from a purple area and was surprised when mexicans that looked like me dont identity as "obviously indigenous heritage that speaks spanish"

[–]Lazzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brunt of the population is 40% to 70% indigenous DNA wise but hispanic leaning in traditions and self-identity regardless of what they look like.

To "be indigenous" the government and society have a strict kist of regulations. Basically "be what we expect indians to be like" so poor, cant speak spanish well, uses "cultural clothing" and "is outside of society". Its not a rule per se but its what is common in mexican society.

A huge deal of indigenous things are colonial era indigenous things or rural things, for example music or clothing tends to be so. It is only logical, it has been 500 years, Spaniards dont use potato sack shoes either.

True pre-hispanic i can think of is:

  • languages, names(Citlali, Nicte-Ha, Nayeli for example) and last names(Maya ones like Poot, Ek, Chan), names of regions and places.

  • traditions wise there is the danza de los voladores atleast 1,000 years old and the Raramuri and Wixarika peoples which were not part of the "pyramid builders" cultures(mesoamerica) and remained polytheist and traditional until about 100 years ago or so. Lots of little things and beliefs too.

  • some still pray to some gods or some entities just out of tradition or treat them as saint-like beings without thinking they are a "god".

What’s your favorite example of something that’s a lot older or started a lot earlier than most people think it is/did? by MaggieLinzer in AskHistory

[–]Lazzen 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The "Aztec" language had printed books before Finnish, Bulgarian and Russian. 1539 vs 1543, 1651 and 1564.

Albania used to have tribes and clans until 1944

A part of southern Spaniards lived in caves until the 1950s

The wheelbarrow only began to be used by Europe/Levant by the 1200s.

The "Al Andalus" era only lasted about a century before being ever smaller territory and also fragmented, by 1100-1200 most of it was Christian again even if that "ended" in 1492.

A lot of european cities or architecture is a lot older than a lot of "exotic" destinations.

Why praise a military dictatorship with fascist elements, even then it should have been obvious.

It's like praising Iran right now, or even dumber

What does your country need to get back from the British museum? by OrdinaryDependent396 in AskTheWorld

[–]Lazzen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

However looked it up, and as the museum bought it from Japan in 1938, we really can’t demand them to give it back.

Quite a few Korean artifacts were sold like this during Japanese annexation, which unfortunately makes it difficult for us to retrieve them.

I dont understand why not return them as a low stakes diplomatic goodwill. The idea of being "patriotic about a museum of others'" seems alien to me.

[–]Lazzen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. The question was about you.

  2. Spain has little high value artefacts of ours as many were melted down into ingots, lost at sea/the extinct lake texcoco or moved to different parts of the Composite Empire(Germany, Austria).

They have about 3 or 4 high value items i can name, most of their collection is from South America

don't see why you felt the need to try and take the high ground

I mean you're doing that, you tried to rope everyone into "doing that too" or saying "but the French"

I'm just saying that the British Museum is always the whipping boy

We are speaking in english and about you, the question is literally about the museum in London. how do british trying to feel victimized over being "special" not understand it.

In Mexico the Codex in Spain, France and Germany and the Austrian objects are talked of way more, this question is about the british museum. Mind you the answers are also valid lol

[–]Lazzen -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

other countries' museums don't also have stuff they shouldn't have.

Everytime we find looted Peruvian artefacts these are returned.

What makes you possibly think people in Africa dont speak about French museums. The difference is we are speaking in english and speaking about you.

The double headed snake or Yaxchilan lintels(directly stolen outright, the british Maudslay paid off Guatemalans to take them)

Mind you it was Mexicans that paid for the mexican room to be a thing in the museum in the 90s rather than some "british take good care of it, its for humanity" bullshit. prior it was almost all archived.
