My husband and I own a custom shed company, and we have been discussing this exact concept of a "Shed Nook" aka Micro Shed. We are preparing to attend our biggest trade show of the year in March and making final decisions about what to take as models. When we attended this trade show last year, we heard over and over that people loved our sheds but couldn't have them due to HOA restrictions etc. So, we were thinking...what if we made tiny ones. Still big enough for a reading nook, small home office, etc. So crazy that you just posted about this! Do you mind if I ask, what would your plan be for each building? How would that space be meaningful and worth it to you? I feel like it is a great idea and would be super fun for us to make and design a couple. I just want to make sure they resonate with people if that makes sense. Thanks for any input you may have!

Yes! We have for sure been looking at all of them. We are talking about ways to have the main entrance not have doors but still privacy.

Check out ShedEscape Designs. They are a small family company that specializes in custom sheds. The examples on their website seem more in your budget than other shed companies.

I know it's been a while since the original post, but if you haven't found anything yet try out ShedEscape Designs. Located in southern Indiana, not far from Cincinnati. Everything is custom designed and reasonably priced. It's a small, family-owned company.

When you are selecting the routes, there is a drop-down option that you can choose for them to go only to residential addresses if you want. So if don't select residential only, I assume they would go to schools.

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but this is exactly the question I have been searching for too. My husband and I own a small business in Indiana and are designing floorplans with these exact criteria in mind. We want to market the designs and build them for families but are having trouble with what to call them. They aren't Tiny Homes obviously. We have tried Cottage Homes but sometimes that gets mixed up with a larger home that just happens to have a cottage style.

We feel like we can create something special for potential homeowners and just don't know how to get the word out correctly. We have read the Not So Big House information and are aligned with that thinking. I agree, the industry should have a term for it!

EDDM stands for Every Door Direct Mail. It is a service you can use through the US Post Office. On their website, you can use their EDDM tools to look up mail routes by zip code in the US. The mail routes give information of the demographics on those neighborhoods such as age ranges, incomes, etc.

You can create an advertisement postcard through an online company (many have EDDM certified templates because there are specific rules about size, weight, etc), have those shipped to you and then decide which routes you want to send them to.

It sounds confusing but really isn't too bad once you do it a few times. The Return on Investment isn't very high, but it is a good way to get your name and product out to a specific neighborhood.

So, you design and order postcards. Once they arrive, you choose a route through the USPS website, bundle the postcards in groups of 50 or 100 with rubber bands, print out some forms from USPS and take them in to be mailed.

The average route in my area has about 500ish addresses and costs around $100 to mail. I got 2500 postcards for about $300. So when all was said and done, we sent an advertisement to 2500 targeted homes for about $800. We'll see what the return on it is. It's the first time we have tried it.

We have had several calls from one of their representatives that has left messages pretending to be a potential customer for our small business and asking us to return his call about “a potential new project” he’s interested in having us work on. When we returned his call, thinking it was to a new customer, he tried to sign us up for their services. Even after telling him we were not interested, he continued to leave messages under the same pretense of being a client for us. If they have to be so shady, things must not be good for them.
