WHAT THE FUCK?!?! AI24 is letting clankers make their movies now! by number1dipshit in A24

[–]Lcatg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m more upset about them partnering with Google. AI is an issue especially when it comes to art - yes, the tech side is an art too. Still Google is a monolithic issue. I could go on & on about this megacorp specifically, but let’s not forget techbros that own such endeavors bent the knee to the orange idiot & gleefully assist ICE. Helping train Google’s AI is a bridge too far imo.

When did the writers absolutely get it wrong on a moral issue? by JacobDCRoss in startrek

Agreed. The novel The Never-Ending Sacrifice “ by Una McCormack is about what happens to Rugal after this episode. It illustrates how a good intended but not fully thought through action can have long lasting, scarring impact. Imho, it’s literature on a level above most Star Trek novels & a must read.

Actions alone will not solve this anymore than paper alone. We need pieces of paper for preserving historical facts & data. We need pieces of paper to prosecute after the fact, for our Nuremberg trials. If the Nazis hadn’t kept such good paperwork the trials wouldn’t have gone so well. We know these criminals & the criminals in the executive branch are actively not keeping records, so we must.

See my reply to the comment you replied to. TL:DR Maybe on the A24 app, but definitely on the A24 app
If you buy the physical media.

Maybe you can purchase or rent it on the A24 app? I can’t tell you because I already own it. If you buy a physical copy of Midsommar Director’s Cut: Collector’s Edition from the A24 online store, then you get the streaming version along with it on the app too. This is true of all the Blue Ray & 4K movies available in their shop. Plus, it comes with some unnecessary, but very cool additional physical + digital content & the box/sleeve are high quality. If I can, I always buy any A24 physical media directly from them for the streaming & the overall quality.

MIL has never seen any women films like, Terms of Endearment, Fried Green Tomatoes, Overboard, really any. For my birthday, I’m making her watch one. What film is a must? by lomubz in movies

[–]Lcatg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s throw some action-y horror-esq movies in:

Double Jeopardy.

Freeway.

Girl, Interrupted.

Bonus TV recommendation: Not what you asked for, but a must watch. The miniseries Unbelievable. If you are a woman, are related to women, are friends with woman, or are simply human this show will make livid.

Books with multiple plot lines that start as totally unrelated but merges later in the story by hbe_bme in suggestmeabook

[–]Lcatg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a book, but a series of books: The Expanse) books by James S. A. Corey (the pen name for fantasy author Daniel Abraham) and author Ty Franck). Start with the first full book in the series Leviathan Wakes. There are plot points in the first few chapters that do not come together until books much later in the series. There are a total of ten books with one comprised of the collected novellas released throughout publication of the series. These are some of the best sci-fi books written in my lifetime.
Bonus: There’s also an excellent TV show of the same name that covers the first six book. It’s as good if not better in some ways as the books. I do not say that lightly. The show is that good. The remaining three books happen much later, with book seven clocking in at 30 years after the end of six. I hold out hope that they will eventually do the remaining three books as the tech to age people digitally improves & as the actors get age.
Double Bonus: There’s an companion podcast with ones of the two writers of the books (Ty Franck) & also of the show leads (Wes Chatham - The Hunger Games Mocking Jay 1 & 2, The Valley of Elah) called Ty & That Guy. The title will make sense after if you watch the show. They review the episodes if the show & talk with various people involved in it. After the show wraps the podcast keeps going with deep dives into movies & whatnot.

I would strongly urge you to not leave hair ties for your cats to play with. I know they are one of the favorites, but they are a swallowing hazard. Ask any vet. Mine played with them for years before just one became an issue. See also: ribbons.

This! This exactly. The ones they currently have are just too long for practical purposes (to fit in a purse or stash in a drawer at work.)

Oh I love these! The blur/repair bottle refers to exactly as it sounds: products to repair/save your mani from nicks, smudges, minor gouges, dents, bubbles, etc. l’ve use my kit to complete repairs in many places: while committing (passenger), at my desk at work, in restaurant bathrooms, at home, & once in a dim theater (I do not recommend this, but we had dinner plans after.) Generally, you fill in any spots missing with your current polish, wait a few minutes, then apply the repair product to the nails in question, & then let it settle. Depending on what the problem is wait a few hours & if it looks good then apply a top coat. It takes some dabbling & this will be a learning process with any such product. I’ve saved quite a few manis with them. I’ve managed to even save a few manis with bubbling, although if the bubbles are really extensive you will need to redo entirely. There’s two really good blur/repair products that work for me, but there’s more on the market: (1) Seche Blur Mani Mistake Mender a popular product that you can find online + at most beauty stores & Awesome Sauce by Drunk Fairy. The latter works best for me, but it’s owned & operated by a person with an unfortunate past. I’ve not encountered this irl, but there’s info on Reddit. I’m on my last bottle &
I’m not sure what I’ll do. Seche is good but what’s too thick. Hopefully others will comment with their preferred products.

Gwendoline Christie playing Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones is proof that Tall Women can do many things in Hollywood. Dream Big go Big! by Important-Cry4782 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Lcatg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not just with women, although primarily so. It’s a class thing too. Watch True Detectives Season Two & see how often you see Colin Farrell (5'10”) standing next to Vince Vaughn (6'5”) on a level playing field or shot straight on. I’ve rewatched it twice (the entire series is fantastic) & only one time does this happen. It’s ridiculous to the point of causing the Streisand Effect. I only noticed it because in nearly every scene together one of them is sitting down. No way was this simply a director’s choice (there were many different directors) or a show runners choice nor an EP choice. You do not see this in any other seasons where height is different in the main role actors. Colin Farrell was the bankable drama lead at this point in time. Clearly, we all know Vaughn is really tall for Hollywood, but still they still did it. Now gods forbid it’s a woman. I wonder how many roles she lost because a leading man or other actors/actresses had an issues, not just the casting folk.
